  • @BigHornArmory

    Recoil in the 500 S&W Model 89 is significantly less than the 45-70 in a Marlin, Ruger #1 or an H&R. Even though the power is greater with the M89, the stock design helps mitigate the recoil.

    I own a Model 89 and a Marlin 1894SBL in 45-70. The 89 is lighter on recoil until you get into pushing real heavy bullets, 500gr and heavier. Shooting lighter loads like 275gr bullets is surprisingly tame.

  • @dundonrl

    Definitely faster follow up shots from the Model 89 (and with the 18 and 22" barrel guns, you can have 7 rounds flying down range as fast as you can work the action)

    No sir, the 45-70 is too long for our action, it would require a complete re-design, plus the 500 S&W can do everything the 45-70 can do and more so we don't see the need. When you can shoot 200gr up to 700gr bullets out of the Model 89 you're covering a lot of bases that most other calibers aren't capable of. Plus, half inch holes...

    I gave it a thumbs-up because I like the gun. But Big Horn, please do demos at a range that will meet NSSF specs. Too many "backyard accidents" come from home-built ranges that don't meet the specs to set a good example and prevent those accidents that were really negligence in building a proper backstop. Please understand, this is purely constructive criticism and intended to up your level of professionalism as perceived by safety conscious industry pros.

    lol..... it's a giant pile of dirt... not sure how that's not a "proper backstop". Most military qual ranges don't even have backstops lol. Benefits of not living up your neighbor's butt: you can shoot safely lol. You'd hate to see my proofing setup... it involves a tpost, a 2x4, coated wire, a string, and an abandoned railroad fill lol. Safety-Sally's can get bent, there's a big difference between being safe and paying stupid money to someone so they can pat you on the back and tell you "you're safe".

    Though I love the rifle none the less, you can't compare anti-materiel & an elephant gun to 500 S&W. It's not even apples to watermelons. Can't compare cracking an engine block to cracking an elephants skull to putting down a grizzly. That still is a pistol load.

  • @BuggaBoy69

    @BuggaBoy69

    3 жыл бұрын

    That pistol load has more power than the 450 bm, 458 socom, and 50 Beowulf. It’s not as much the size of the case as it is the pressure the case can handle (60,000 psi which is identical to the 50bmg) compare that to the 500 nitro express at 40,000 psi.

    @@BuggaBoy69 didn't know that for sure. I would love getting a rifle with a 22" barrel in that caliber. I know only of the Towner pump action and the big horn armory lever action. Those 2 are amazing carbines in 500 S&W. With a busted wrist like mine those are my best choice.

    @@exothermal.sprocket primer costs $0.08, 440gr of lead costs $0.14, cases depreciate to around $0.07 (assuming average of 10 loadings), 10gr of blue dot is $0.04. Employees at most Ammo MFG's make around $11-17/hr, and you can turn out between 20 and 800 rd/hr (your equipment and process determines that). That equipment depreciates to around $0.01/rd (or less), as it's going to last your lifetime (you aren't going to wear out reloading equipment loading for private use... just saying). That's $0.34/rd for .500 SW Mag, not including your time, which can be anything from $0.01/rd to $0.85/rd (I never include my time in my cost, I enjoy loading ammo, it's part of shooting, and I do it when I can't really do anything else (rainy days, winter, when I'm home sick, babysitting while the kid is napping, not wanting to deal with my wife's attitude, ect)). In a rifle, you could realistically use less of a slower powder like BL-C2 ; 5gr of that runs around $0.02 . H110, Power Pro 300MP, and Reloder-7 cost about the same, and might work better in a 16" barrel. Could also load it with BP and have something akin to .50-45-400 Carbine; 45gr of homemade BP can run you $0.016
