BEST TRUCK MOD Redline OPT 7 Triple LED Tailgate Bar Installation [4K]

PLEASE CHECK OUT THE PINNED COMMENT IN THE COMMENT SECTION It has helpful updates and answers many common questions!!
This is a step by step instillation of the Redline Opt Triple LED tail light bar. I have installed close to fifteen of these now for people and everyone loves them. I highly recommend putting this on every pickup truck. The three features : Brake, Turn Signals, and Reverse Light are very bright and useful. This is a very affordable modification in the grand scheme of truck modifications that can all be done for under $140. I installed this bar on a 2014 Toyota Tundra, but have also installed it on several other trucks such as my 2018 GMC Sierra 2500, friends Ford F150's as well as Chevy 1500's. As I mentioned in the video I have not seen a way anyone on youtube got the reverse light to work like I did. Splice into the middle pin on the adapter and you do not need to pull out your tail light and splice into that. Here is the links to the three things you will need.

Common Questions Answered / Install Method Update as of Jan 3, 2021 Q1 What is the red wire on the tailgate Bar Rear Sensor Tow Assist 4-Pin Module V2 A1 The reason that there now is a red wire and I did not have one is because sometime between when I purchased mine and now they changed the design of the box. I don't know why they did but they did it was actually brought to my attention by other people in the comments. That red wire must somehow power components in the box so you need to connect it to a power source. From what I can see in the pictures and diagrams the clear box looking thing in line of the wire is probably a glass fuse. If there is no fuse I would definitely add one with like a 2.5A or 5A fuse. With regards to the box please read the next part of this as well because there is a good chance you do not need it. Update 1 The box mentioned above may not be needed. This is coming from what I have read on the box from Redlines website. Their website states “Designed exclusively by OPT7 for 2015+ FORD vehicles ONLY with a tow package, backup camera or backup sensors.” www.opt-7.com/tow-package-module-for-redline-led-tailgate-bars/ I installed the box initially on my GMC 2500 because the tow haul screen feature was being activated occasionally and I assumed it was due to the truck somehow detecting a trailer wire harness being plugged in. I have since removed the box from my Toyota tundra and have no problems. Other people in the comments have also installed without the box and have had no problems. I did have one person mention their bar wasn’t working correctly without the adapter and once they put it on everything worked perfectly. So my current advice would be don’t use it unless you have a 2015+ Ford like redline recommends try installing without it and if you have no issues you should not need it. Update 2 You can get the reverse light to work without soldering like I did in the video. Curt makes a different adapter PN# 56584 instead of the PN# 55384 which i used in the video. The difference is the CURT PN# 56584 provides a 5-pins connector which adds the backup circuit right into it (pin #5), then the only thing you need is to crimp a heat shrink bullet terminal on the white wire and insert it into the pin #5 and then seal/secure it with some electrical tape and dielectric grease. This will eliminate the soldering step if you are unfamiliar with soldering or uncomfortable with it. It should also save you time. Update 3 You can use magnets or magnetic tape to stick the bar to your truck bed. In my video I covered the hole that should you need to access your spare tire for some reason I would have to pull the bar off. Not required but a helpful tip brought to my attention by a few people in the comments so thank you guys.

Great info, I'm a bit confused on the 5-pin connector. So the 4-pin from the light bar will plug into the 5-pin from the adapter, and I'm assuming leave one "hole" open on the end (of the 5-pin). I'm looking on Amazon and that pin is connected to a blue wire. The white wire is going to the "exposed" male pin on the 5-pin. I thought the reverse was "white" (or is it just white from the light bar and not on the 5-pin). Please let me know if I'm looking at this wrong. Many thanks.

My only issue is the spare tire. How are you supposed to get to the crank hole whatever you wanna call it. to lower down the spare tire you’d have to pull the adhesion off every time. I guess that’s why they include those clips but it kind of sucks cause I don’t want to drill holes in my truck. I’m thinking about trying to find a really strong magnets.

If you can open your tailgate your hinges are obviously not stuck! Also there is usually a plastic bushing in the hinge so the chances of it being stuck are pretty much nonexistent! Also electric tape is garbage, It will not protect any wires from moisture and corroding! As long as you are already soldering that wire you should have just cut it Slid on some heat shrink with sealant and just soldered it back together along with the reverse wire from the light bar! Just in case someone is confused you can purchase heat shrink that has a sealer inside of it that melts upon heating and gives you double protection!

It says on the description for the module: If you use the hardwire method, with the included hardwire kit that comes with the TRIPLE Row and splice into your stock brake/turn signal wiring. This route, you will not need the module, you will free-up your tow plug It even says Tacomas and Tundras do not need this module and you just need to hardwire it.

I haven’t heard of that issue before hopefully the box will fix it, if it doesn’t id chalk it up to two potential issues. 1) being the bar is faulty 2) for some reason your truck isn’t sending power to the pins which you could test with a multi meter or test light but given how new it is i doubt that thats the issue especially since the reverse and tail light are working.

Nice Video. You made the install look very easy. Quick question, on the OPT7 Redline Triple, LED Tailgate Bar Rear Sensor Tow Assist 4-Pin Module V2 you have listed and linked up above, there seems to be a red wire that must be connected to a 12V constant power source. Did you install a different model of the Tailgate bar sensor or did you connect it to your battery and did not show that option or did you remove the wire? just curious. I want to install a tailgate light bar on my 2016 Tundra TRD Pro.

  • @TrevsGarage

You are correct the reason that you have a red wire and I did not is because sometime between when I purchased mine / you buying yours they changed the design of the box. I don't know why they did but they did it was actually brought to my attention by people in the comments. That red wire must somehow power components in the box so you need to connect it to a power source. Also since publishing the video I've realized the box isn't needed on probably 90% of installs. Someone else in the comments had a 2017 Tundra used no box and had no problems. Id suggest trying no box first. I went off my own experience having installed this on my GMC 2500 that sometimes thought there was a trailer connected and switched my display to tow/haul mode so the box solved that issue for me. From what I understand now its really only needed on newer Fords or if you are having some issue like I did with the GMC.

It would depend on the truck model for example my 2018 GMC 2500 access to the spare is located in the bumper not in that gap where the light is. If you are worried about the bar being stolen I would honestly just stick it on then. Worst case you end up with a flat just pull it off and then you can purchase new rolls of double sided adhesive tape and reapply the bar, thats how I would do it.

Hey Dennis I would try the tail light bar module if you currently are not running it. It specifically is for blind spot assist on newer trucks but I used it on my personal truck and it solved my towing problem as well. Hi, I am trying to install OPT7 redline triple LED for 2020 F150. Instead of using Rear Sensor Tow Assist 4-Pin Module V2 and CURT 55384 USCAR 4-Pin Trailer Wiring Harness, Why cant I use just one item which is OPT7 4-Pin Tow Y Splitter Connector Adapter ? Please advise.

  • @TrevsGarage

    @TrevsGarage

There is nothing wrong with that, or plugging directly into the tow pin connector. I chose to use the curt harness to hide the wiring underneath and leave the bumper 4 pin open and easily accessible. The module is specifically intended for fords with trailer blind spot assist features, however before installing it on my own GMC 2500 I too watched some videos on how it could be done. Some trucks like mine have a towing screen and such that can automatically click on when it detects that a trailer wiring harness has been plugged in. I used the module to eliminate this, if you wanted to save the money and try without it at first you could and see what happens.

Just check the 7 pin diagram on your trucks bumper where the 7 pin cover is. As long as the middle pin says backup lamps then you can do it as I did in the video. I’m going to assume it probably does because every truck I’ve done this to has been the same way but better to be safe and check. You can go to the tail light wiring but I did it this way specifically because I did not want to go to the tail light.

Rickey sometime between when I purchased mine / you buying yours they changed the design of the box. I don't know why they did but they did it was actually brought to my attention by people like yourself in the comments. I would personally connect it up to the battery, or if you happen to have anything like light bars or something running you could add it onto that. From what i can see in the pictures / diagrams the clear box looking thing in line of the wire is probably a glass fuse. If there is no fuse I would definitely add one with like a 2.5A or 5A fuse. If you are interested in experimenting you may be able to get away with no box. I used the box because on my 2018 GMC 2500 when I plugged in the bar it automatically was detecting a trailer and activating my towing screen. Because of that I have always just put the box on every vehicle I have done since which may have not been necessary. If you do happen to try it without the box let me know if anything happens since I am curious. Hope that helps.

Hello good question, the bar comes in two different sizes 48 inches and 60 inches. If you have a gap where the bar can go and there is a flat surface in that gap for you to mount the bar too I don't see any reason it wouldn't work. Part two of that is do you have a 4 pin trailer wiring spot on the truck? Id imagine that you do not have a 7pin/4pin wiring combo which is okay. You may just have to directly plug in the bar to that 4 pin then and to make the reverse light work you would have to tap your taillight. Hope that helps if you have any more questions feel free to ask!

I would recommend that you use a heat shrink prong if you go that route just so that you can get the best weather proofing possible since dirt grime etc will definitely end up on the wiring harness under the truck. Thanks for mentioning this method.
