Given the success of Superman Rebirth, under Peter J. Tomasi and Patrick Gleason, as well as Action Comics by Dan Jurgens, comic book fans have been holding their breath, waiting to see what big blue will feel like under Brian Michael Bendis. With Man Of Steel #1, we take our first look at what he has in store for us. On the surface it might be some witty banter, spoken in a voice that sounds a lot like Bendis himself, but when we dive a little deeper we see more. The introduction of Rogol Zaar and what he means to the history of Krypton is a sweeping change to continuity. The disappearance of the Kent family, with Jon and Lois no longer around, upsets the entire family dynamic. On top of that, this Superman feels a touch less focused, since he can occasionally lose focus and become caught up in the moments around him. Does brining Superman down to Earth elevate the character? The jury is out on this one, but Bendis is taking full ownership of the world around Superman and it all starts with Man Of Steel #1. We'll have to wait and see if it pays off.
iRate Reviews is the show where I go over specific comic books from my pickup that deserve to be talked about and review them in a little bit more depth. This doesn't mean that they are always good though. Some comics are lessons in what NOT to do.

    Not a legit fear about Lois at all since she's already been seen in doomsday clock which is a year in the future from the books...Jon, I doubt it, but it's a possibility since so many have cried for conner's return

    Plus I think people are giving Bendis way too much power at DC...it's NOT marvel and he just got there. With Johns as the CCO (a position he didn't have before the new 52 was shoved on us) I think even Bendis will have to play by the John's rulebook (at least for the foreseeable future)

    Love the art and the storytelling. That large panel without words is a nice emotional touch. But no John and Lois is not something I am into they have been apart of Supermans growth as a character. Still, it's early days so we'll see. So keep me posted, Stan. Thanks.

    The art was definitely strong, especially when it came to Rogol Zaar. Giving him an entire page to just be crushed by the black in his cave and the decision of the "council". I wasn't expecting that but it was a pleasant surprise.

    Rogol Zaar seems to take his responsibility very seriously and with a lot of passion also answering to a council he is like a flip Brainiac who is logical and answers to no one. I wonder if they would get along.

    Gotta admit, it was pretty good. Glad that Bendis did not destroy the marriage (yet). He only had Lois and John kidnapped, so, for now I guess, that's ok. However, there are a few details that were kind of annoying. Like Metropolis has only 3.2 million citizens? God dammit Bendis, you're off by like 8 million people. And Kryptonians were never fans of space traveling from what I heard. That aside, I liked the dialogue, and the storytelling.

  • @DetailComics

    @DetailComics

    I was pretty sure that they banned space travel entirely, which is why they denied Jor-El the ability to save all the Kryptonians. One of the things that seems to be getting retconned.

    Detail Comics , It may be banned , but they travelled before. In New 52 , we at least had one example of Zod and Krypton's army attacking a close planet , Green Lanterns we see that at one point a kryptonian astronaut was a member of the corps.

    Norman Smith56 The conversation made by Rogol and the holograms probably happened way before, if not right before Krypton banned space travel. Something probably happened along the way before that, and then it continues to the banning of space exploration, Zod's rebellion and Krypton civil war, then the destruction of Krypton.

  • @Killinemkid

    Norman Smith56 A city with 11 million people in it is ridiculous for America. New York is the most populous city in America at slightly over 8 million people and seeing as how Gotham and Metropolis are generally written as being near one another and New York exists in DC comics, it only makes sense to have a much lower population. Also, Kryptonians weren't always against space travel, for a time they travelled the galaxies and be it that Kryptonians were xenophobic and supremacists they were likely quite cruel to other alien species.

    Okay. So I have some thoughts. The art was gorgeous. I'm interested in Rogol's arc, but I hope they stick the landing with him. The two previews to this arc we've had didn't impress me at all, and I think removing Lois and Jon is a mistake they need to rectify as soon as possible. I also don't know how to feel about these new "love-interest"-esque characters he's introduced. I'm cautiously optimistic because I really want this to succeed but after the awesome Tomasi/Gleason run that just ended Bendis is going to have to do a lot to get to that level.

The artwork is pretty spectacular and most of all, I appreciated that we're getting a villain who actually has a motive that can be understood, and not some mindless vehicle of destruction. Man of Steel #1 is a pretty good start to Brian Michael Bendis's run on Superman. It isn't an amazing story, but it does its job of setting up future themes for the run on the character and does enough to make you interested in reading the rest of the series, and the art was gorgeous and fit the book really well. Hopefully, the story gets more interesting and exciting with each issue, but for now, I'm on board with it.

    Admittedly a lot of what goes into this is not how immaculate this issue way (I felt it was a very good start, but its not automatically all-time yet or anything), but rather how poor I thought Rebirth was overall. That's not a popular stance, but its been mine. Tomasi/Gleason fell off around Black Dawn and never recovered. That arc's resolutions were underwhelming and started a trend the rest of the few other big arcs ending with thuds, and this is also around the time that last-minute fill-ins provided too much filler like the abysmal Road Trip storyline and the ultimately pointless Deathstroke story. Further, to me it perpetuated too much of a perfect lifestyle for Superman and family that bordered on the saccharine. It also foused WAY too much on Jon at the expense of the main character. Meanwhile Jurgens' run, pre Superman Reborn it had to deal with the dual Superman situation which I just felt was an absolute awful way to go with Rebirth. They should have never killed off one Superman and introduced another. They should have just reincorporated the history for the singular character like the rest of the DCU. Dealing with that nonsense (something Tomasi and Gleason on the other hand largely got to ignore) severely hurt the quality and immersion of the stories. Superman Reborn would eventually fix this to some degree, and the book got better, but even then I felt it was just average. It felt mostly like a rehash of the triangle era. Which I enjoyed at the time but I didn't really need to revisit it. MOS on the other hand is tackling the hardships of Superman with a family, which is only appropriate as there's no way Superman can have a normal family life. Just no way. Its showing an interest in fleshing out the supporting cast of Metropolis, which has been sorely missed for a long time (as long as it doesn't go overboard like the late 90s). And on top of that we've got some solid early mysteries going that for now, have my interest. Its one issue, of course the direction is an open book right now, and its impossible to directly compare one run which is essentially just two prologues and one issue in, to two others that are completed at circa two years worth of double-shipped stories. But for all the above reasons, the beginning has grabbed me more and with way less baggage than the beginning of Rebirth.

  • @DetailComics

    @DetailComics

    6 жыл бұрын

    A well constructed and thought out reason. I can completely understand why this would be much more appealing to you than some of the other titles that came before it. Some of the storylines (like the Deathstroke one) were constructed by other writers, but as they are a part of the run it does add some areas of weakness to Rebirth Superman as a whole. I don't think your stance is an unpopular one; simply different. A lot of readers responded to the familial aspect of Superman in Rebirth because it brought the character in a direction we hadn't seen before. He was a father, a husband and while it may have been overly rose colored in some cases, it was a pretty stark contrast to what Superman was in the new 52. Action Comics was touch a go for me, regardless of which arc in Rebirth you are talking about, but I hope MOS and Bendis' new run on Superman and Action deliver for you. I am interested to see where the supporting cast of Metropolis comes into play, as long as they don't overshadow Superman in the same way you feel Jon took the focus off of Superman. After all, we all just want to read the best story we can.

    Man of Steel the movie seems better. This is predicated on comic tropes like it's aware of how campy its supposed to be. I really enjoyed snyders version because there was no automatic grooming Clark in to being a super hero. His parents didn't hav all the answers. The worlds introduction to superman wasn't on his terms but Zods. I also thought that Reeve's superman was never the real superman. His powers are completely down played due to the restrictions on technology at the time. But if Reeve's had Cavill's powers along with his enemies... his superman would of logically went down the path Snyder's superman did.

    It was okay at least not something that deeply impressed me. Some concerns from this Rogul zaar character tied into Krypton’s destruction and the way he’s subtly treating the Kent family which is to me why Superman’s rebirth run was good because of the family element. Hope Bendis doesn’t pull another “ messing the status quo” ploy like he’s done before.
