👆 Behringer Odyssey Dual-Oscillator Duophonic Analog Synthesizer - tinyurl.com/y2pqbhdr
The Behringer Odyssey is undoubtedly among their most requested classic analog synth releases. Modelled on the legendary ARP synthesizer of the ‘70s, it goes a step further to offer a combination of classic dual-oscillator sound and advanced modern functionality.
As you’d expect, the Odyssey features an all-analog signal path. This more or less begins with a classic dual-oscillator configuration. Sawtooth, square/pulse with pulse-width modulation, or sine/square wave LFO offer the ultimate analog tonal palette.
Next up, an incredibly powerful 3-way filter allows you to sculpt your tone to no end. Choose from 2-pole, 4-pole MkII and 4-pole MkIII, with faders for cutoff, resonance and HPF frequency. Finally, a drive switch allows you to tip it over the edge for more cutting, aggressive sounds.

    Had one of these a few months, you can't really go wrong getting one. You quickly learn how the controls affect the sounds and realise that this type of synth is better without presets, as it forces you to experiment to get the sound you want. It's a steal at the price.

    Not feeling this one. At least with their model d and 101 they were cloning hardware no longer made, whereas this is in direct competition with korg. Think behringer have some really talented guys working for them, just wish they'd let them let rip a bit more on original synths rather than clones. Think synths like the deepmind and particularly neutron have the potential to be classic synths themselves in time whereas the clones are just that, clones.

  • @UMAMIMAMU

    @UMAMIMAMU

    Korg dropped the ball in a number of ways with their Odyssey reissue. No professional keyboardist with any sense wants mini keys. Then to add insult to injury, they make a "limited edition" full sized version that costs three times as much. Ridiculous. You can literally buy an original Odyssey for around the same price point. With this on the verge of release Korg's mini key version is basically obsolete, leaving only the FS version competent. The only plus to the Korg version is the fact that it says ARP, which admittedly, to a vintage key and ARP fanatic like myself is definitely cool, but for $1200 more it ain't THAT cool. I'd just as soon buy a Behringer and have ARP stenciled on it. If Korg did a better job, Behringer wouldn't be making this, period. There wouldn't be enough money in it. What they're doing is great. Vintage synth sounds are extremely popular and highly coveted, yet despite that most people can't afford to drop several thousand dollars on one, so they simply go without. Should access to these sounds be limited to the elite few that can afford to collect them??? I don't think so. Behringer is simply supplying a demand for a market that's been long ignored, and in the process providing a huge service to musicians by giving these sounds a new life for a new audience. It's about time that the average consumer can afford analog synths. They've been priced out of range for far too long, almost into obsolescence. Relegating them to rich people who simply hoard them out of a sense of vanity and collector's value does nothing for music.

  • @MrClarkio

    @MrClarkio

    5 жыл бұрын

    UMAMIMAMU the price and the ethics of it were not the point I was trying to make. Rather that with the talent they have at behringer I would prefer to see them make their own synths, which the deepmind and neutron show they can do. I agree keeping analog synths as the preserve of collectors does little to advance music but it could be argued that cloning synths which have existed for 30+ years also doesn't help progress music. The classics of the future should be the synths of today. TBH not really sure I have too big a drum to beat here, with $300 in my pocket I can choose from a behringer sh101, model d, neutron, crave or others such as arturia. Or I could use it to buy a couple of volcas or a roland boutique if I just want the hands on rather than pure analog. It's a nice dilemma to have.

  • @UMAMIMAMU

    @@MrClarkio I kinda see your point. And honestly, I'm pretty damn sure that in time Behringer will start making more original designs. As you've said, they've already proven more than competent at making their own with the Neutron and DeepMind 6 & 12 (and the Crave!). I just think right now they're filling a void that a lot of people have had for synthesizers that they could never afford before. They're also delivering a product that's really marketable to professionals. None of this bullshit with mini-keys like the Yamaha reface series, or the Osyssey mini and MS-20 mini. I have my own studio and network with many others who do as well, and none of us would be caught dead with that crap.

    in all fairness the Deepmind, Crave, and Neutron all have very interesting novel approaches while being merely inspired on vintage features and sonic qualities. I'd say enough to say they're "letting the engineers/designers' creativity rip" because the only (relatively big) companies really innovating within the analog domain are Moog, Arturia, Novation, and Korg, with maybe an honorable mention for Elektron. none of these companies have made the synth I have in mind though. although moog grandma comes pretty close

    yeah i see where you're coming from.. there's loadsa stores near me, where there are only womenz. I refuse to shop in any of them, because in an ideal dogmatic world, a store should have exactly 50%-50% mix of sexes.
