Cerrone on how disco classic ‘Supernature’ was made

Ойын-сауық

Cerrone’s ‘Supernature’, released in 1977, is one of disco’s all-time great tracks, reaching number one in the US dance charts in 1978. Its iconic synth lead, created with the classic ARP Odyssey synth, remains one of the genre’s most memorable melodies.
Ahead of the release of his 31st studio album, DNA, FACT met Cerrone at his studio to find out how he made ‘Supernature’ and just how much music production techniques have changed over the past 40 years by talking us through his new track, 'The Impact'.
DNA is out now on Because Music.

Remember this artist name because he doesn't get enough credit for his contributions to the Disco Era. This man produced some of the most iconic tracks in that time period. Not just a national treasure but rather a global treasure. Thank Marc Cerrone for the beautiful memories you created in a time period that I will never forget. Keep producing your music. You haven't even touched the potential creativity that is still inside you.

Good to see Cerrone for the first time in all these years. I was 13 when Supernature came out and it was one of the first records I ever bought. I'll never forget playing this over and over again on my uncles stereo system complete with disco lights and getting totally lost in the rhythm. A total classic.

That was my age then, too! I heard it in junior high school, they didn't call it middle school back then. My film teacher used to play it while we worked on cel animations. The intelligence and atmosphere of that album was a precursor to the industrial dance music ("IDM") of the '90s, like Front 242.

What? I always thought Cerrone was a band, or at least a slender camp guy from New York who had died of Aids. And now I find he is a snarling hairy, snail-eating Frenchman!? I haven't been so shocked since I was twelve and discovered that the guy and gal behind "Body Talk" (Imagination) were two guys! Life is full of surprises. I was listening to Jean Michel Jarre as a 7 year old, and now he looks younger than I do. The French have all the fun.

My dad used to play this over and over again during Halloween in the 80's and it always intrigued and scared me. Especially the picture on the 8 track lol. Then I heard it or a version on Benny Hill. This song has a special place in my heart and I still want to hear the full story on what it is about...this has answered some of my questions. Thank you!

My father brought Cerrone's album back in the 70's when it first came out... It was the weirdest album cover I had seen at that time... completely different to anything I had ever seen and at 9 years old unbeknown to me then would be one of the most influential albums my father would play!.. especially Supernature.. It would lead me to Kraftwerk... Tangerine Dream and then the 80's explosion into synthesiser music... Gary Numan.. Thomas Dolby... Howard Jones... OMD... Depeche Mode... The Human League and many many more amazing artists!!... All from just one song!!... Thankyou so much Mr Cerrone!!! 😊.. from a now 52 year old.🤓

Without even hearing it, I bought my first Cerrone album (Love In C Minor) in 1976 purely based on its striking artwork (the US version with the clenched hands) and because it was in my local shop's "DISCO" bin. 44 years later and I'm still a fan.

Funny you should mention the cover art because when I posted one of his songs (can't remember now, memory lapse now and then), I was censored by FB for what they considered below their "standards". The photo was of a minifridge with the nubile form of a naked woman, whose body was so laid flat and her bosom so flat, she could have been a naif or a waif! It was ART.

This classic remains one of my all time favorites and to see the story of it and how it comes full circle into a new track is incredible. Cerrone is truly a pioneer in electronic dance music. This one’s well deserved all about Cerrone who is the first I was aware of back then, but the other two pioneer producer/musicians for me in this class are Giorgio Moroder and Gino Soccio. So glad I grew up appreciating good music in various styles and genres. Chicago born and raised, I still remember when those idiots called themselves blowing up Disco at Cominsky. Good music never dies. At the same time as “Disco Demolition” it was already evolving. I saw disco live on and continue into “House” and other forms and the rest as they say, is history.

I first heard the William Orbit remix of Erasure's cover of Supernature about 30 years ago in high school, it was an extra track on the 'Blue Savannah' CD single. A few years later I went to school in Lille (France) and was heavily into the local techno/club scene, I used to buy records on the weekends in the local second-hand shops. I came across Cerrone's 'Supernature' on a gatefold vinyl. I had no idea who he was, didn't even know the Erasure tune was a cover at the time, but I recognised the name 'Supernature' and bought it for something cheap like 7FF just to see if was good or not. I prefer the William Orbit remix of Erasure's cover to the original, but only probably because it had blown my mind away so much when I first heard it that nothing was ever going to make me like a different version of it. However, the gatefold of the original is awesome on so many levels, I will never give up my copy. I like to pull it out for Erasure friends so they can hear the original, Cerrone isn't super well-known among people my age in the US. Great interview, glad to know that I understood most of it without needing to read the subtitles :)

But i just didn't know how to treat the audio after to make it work. Love this craft !

He's fascinating! He makes a strong statement about the quality of the music currently in vogue. "Sequencing the hard way" was the order of the early-mid 70's. He evidently get caught up in the atmosphere, the vibe of his new creation, considering he made it in one go. Thankfully, Lena Lovich made a great contribution. I have a plenty of respect for the guy. It would be nice to run into him on the street, somewhere in France in 3 weeks.

I love Cerrone. It’s a shame we do t hear about him more often. Supernature has to be a masterpiece, it’s such a catchy, groovy, electronic, atmospheric, disco song. With fast drums and rhythmic and mighty synthesizers, it makes for a really superb and excellent song. His other song The Impact I haven’t listened to, but from a snippet of a remake on Logic Pro that he did, it sounds equally atmospheric and brilliant! What a musical legend and one of the early strong pioneers of electronic disco music.

I am so deeply fond of "Supernature". My film teacher in 7th grade played this album while we worked on cel animations. I was entranced with the spookiness of it, compared to other disco/dance music, which was about nothing but dancing and fucking. (And often with "dancing lyrics" being merely an acceptable way of singing about fucking.) I bought Cerrone 3 and played it over and over again. Then I bought other albums by him and was so disappointed. That atmospheric storytelling was absent, the science fiction wasn't there. It was basic disco about dancing and fucking. Just today I discovered Lene Lovich actually wrote the lyrics to "Supernature". That explains a lot! I do want to hear "The Impact", as it seems he's now revisiting that territory I was so fond of again!

Excellent video. I am a survivor of the '70s gen of gay men and we helped propel "Supernature" to the hit status it deserved. It sounded great on a dance floor! I don't know who influenced who but Giorgio Moroder came along about the same time. I did not know Cerrone was still around, let alone that he was still making great and apparently politically conscious music so will check "The Impact" out.
