Very nice, and they have done a lot, but please don't try to take away from the trapping books that have been written by trapping legends. Those books contain so much information, in a physical form, that will last long after KZread's gone.

just got back from my first 3 day trapping workshop yesterday and although they showed us how to do all of this, seeing it done in a small space with basic, household tools is really helping my confidence. i don't have a gambrel, a dedicated area to do all this or even a fleshing board (yet-- i plan to build one). i actually live in an urban area without much space or a backyard. your channel actually came recommended by one of the volunteer instructors from the workshop and i'm glad it was. after the workshop, i was worried i wouldn't have the confidence to go out and run traps again on my own, but this has really helped me feel like i can. thanks so much.

Thanks much! This is very helpful! I tie fishing flies and occasionally prepare critter hides. I've always found coon tails to be challenging because of how difficult it is to remove all the fat and oil from the skin. I was surprised that, beyond removing the bone, you didn't do any work on the tail. I scrape as best I can and cure with borax (or a salt and borax) then, when dried, wash the tail in warm soapy water to get as much oil out of the fur and the skin. Because there is no post-processing or tanning I need to get the tail as clean as possible to minimize any greasy smell. Do you have any suggestions or comments that might help with oily skinned critters? I have a couple of tails in the freezer and would appreciate some help.

Can't answer your question but I'd avoid washing in warm water always use cold the warm water will cause the tail to slip because of bacteria

Been looking for this! I just got a red fox and the pelts in the freezer because i dont have a proper setup. I want to make my stuff to save as much as possible because i love making stuff and theres some pride in building your own stuff and succeeding with your own built equipment.

That's why I tell kids that to learn to watch your channel. I encourage them to join the trapping association because they are always putting on demo's. For the fleshing beam you can also drive a steel t post or dig a small wooden post in the ground at an angle and then slip the pvc pipe over the top of it. That’s what I have used and it works pretty good.

From an over the hill trapper, a tail stripper will save you valuable time. Very simple to make one. With a solid skinning rack, once you get the tail freed up, you can wrap that hide and pull it all the way to the shoulders using your body weight.

Thanks for sharing shows you don't need all the fancy stuff to start out I'm starting again haven't done it since I was a teenager so given me inspiration to get after it. I bought some supplies from old guy couple years ago he had putty knives sharpend for skinning reshaped but carbon steel hold an edge well.

I caught 4 coyoties last season and it was from watching your videos. I used dog scrap from our house dogs as an attractant I thought you had said a coyote is no different than your house dogs but it's wild and what does your dog do if it smells another dogs crap. He's gotta go sniff it. It worked for me. Of course my wife got a kick out of me picking up dog dirt with a sandwich bag. Love your videos

What gets me is, fur is a renewable resource that doesn't hurt the environment with a lot of petro-chemical byproducts. I can't understand why that is so hard to figure out (or accept).

Thank you for the information buddy. I just did 2 Grey squirrels for practice. Your video helped me a lot. I'm all the way over here in Bakersfield California. We do have coons, but I mostly see them around parks and near roads where it's not safe to shoot them. Next time I go up to the National Forrest I'll keep my eye out for one. Maybe ask some of the people that own land if they know where they are.

Excellent video Stu helps out the younger less experienced to show them they don't need to invest alot of money right off the bat. People can also collect old political signs and use those instead of cardboard just make sure it's after the election and it's OK to take them

Question: Now what? How does the fur buyer want to receive the skins for purchase? Fur side showing? Skin side showing? Do you soften before the sale? Can each skin touch each other in storage or must it be separate from each other? Is temperature alone enough or should you have a fan blowing on the skins for air circulation? How should you store the skins? In a bag, in a box, wrapped in a blanket, Hanger only, etc? Can the dried skins reabsorb moisture in the air and become rotten? Will bugs get into the skin or fur after they are dried? As always, awesome video.

Man how much are you getting for your furs? You have great and expensive tools. Is trapping a hobbie for you or are you at least paying for your equipment ? I ask because i m in north louisiana and the only buyer in this area i know of ( i m new at it and mainly getting rid of overly bold coyotes and bobcats that are coming into the yard and onto the patio. ) is paying 30 dollars and down for bobcats. That is the only thing they will buy this year. I ve got probably 300 in equipment i d like to pay for. It will be worth it to get rid of the problem animals and i ll enjoy it but it would be nice to get at least beer money. I hope you are getting more than that with the thousands you have invested. I m on the edge of a major city my fence is the city limits and 22 shorts is all i can use without the neighbors calling the law.

million blades you could skin with, shorter list would be anything that absolutely wont work! im thinking carpet knife would be tough with the curve, scissors would be a challenge... oh, an axe? but i bet even those you could make it happen. might not be pretty enough to sell, but if someones stranded in the woods and needee clothing or something... a sharp rock could do. great bideo my sir 🤙

You can also use a pair of pliers as a tail stripper. I've had to do that after breaking my tail stripper before.

Wear gloves when handling critters…shoot and bury any critter that isn’t acting right….it’s not worth the risk
