75 lbs hahahahahah just stop please that’s the what the world record weight is , if you get that coyote and actually get a real weight u will be completely shocked that it’s only 20-30 lbs .

@@mike0566 I weighed him mike. He was the biggest coyote I've ever seen. I still have at least 20 lbs of meat in the fridge from him so I'm sorry you find it hard to believe.

Thanks, good video. I'm a long time tanner and have a collection of scraping knives, though mostly home made. I was lucky enough to find a couple of the old school wide type traditional knives that I cherish. I'm actually working on a design now optimized for general tanning work. The wide knife from austria is made from a scythe blade. That is why the handles are really off center, because that is where to back rib of the blade already is. I've got one I made in the forge from an old scythe blade, but I folded the blade over and forged them into tangs that are more on the centerline of the blade. it works pretty well as I remember. Anyway, good video to have out there. I've been meaning to do a video on these as well.

I would love to see some videos on trapping squirrels, skinning them and boarding them. I know it's not an animal you commonly work with but with your knowledge in the field, I could learn a great deal. Furthermore, if you're looking for more content ideas, this is an avenue that you could pursue. Finally, thank you for all the work you put into these videos!

Thanks for doing these informative videos man. this is my 2nd trapping season and haven't found anyone local to shadow for pointers or questions, so these are truly helpful. I can trap em pretty good, but everything after that is a learning curve (still have trouble finding the ears before it's too late, lol)

another fix i prefer but just my opinion.....wrap thin carpet on fleshing board.....its more forgiving and you Don't ding up board.......it wears out replace it?

Great info! Though I can't imagine using anything but my necker, that and switching to and a pvc beam has changed my world in the fur shed.....and I will gladly give you credit for pushing me in that direction

I probably should have paid more attention to this video when I first watched it. Just bought my first Minnesota Trapline Fleshing Knife and boy was it a pain to get started on my fallow doe hide. I just couldn’t get it going, started loosing ton of hair from underside. Guess I’ll try again with the next derr

How do I take the deer hide out of the freezer and get it ready to unthaw and get it read to flesh the hide. I have never done this and I am a girl.

This is the same thing only your actually doing work not using an air compressed wheel

Have you considered doing a video about the different skinning knifes you use? Also how often you tend to touch up the edges throughout an evening of skinning?

+chieffan92588 no really personal preference. some prefer a heavier knife for beaver. biggest thing is get one with a sharp side as well as a pushing side

I just purchased a Sheffield 12x3 for my first fleshing knife probably not a good first choice for this style of knife, as I've heard they are very sharp, and can ruin a hide, but I wanted to start with a good one. So what can I expect with a Sheffield knife are they sweet to use? I just want to hear the good points about this style in particular or a similar knife on par i.e. style,steel quality, sharpness, etcetera.

C D Kennedy personally the Sheffield is a little to big of a knife for me unless i'm doing buckskins or real big stuff. that said its all personal preference and what you get used to. best of luck

yamahondazuki95 not sure i understand your question. i use a true first cut knife for skinning. if your talking about a knife for shaving than anyone with a sharp side.

Post & caribou was my go to . Sheffield was ok .

Stu please pass along to new Trappers: If you've never had a fleshing knife, especially a razor sharp one you need to put a few things in your brain so you don't die: 1.) Never "cross the break" with your hands. Meaning, Don't wrap it in a "sheath" that requires you to put your hand around to unfurl it. Just don't do it. Make or buy an "ax-like sheath." 2.) Make a flat rack for it to sit on the ground with dowel rods that sort of hold it in place, or put it back in its container. Do not ever leave it out like you might another knife because you will be tricked. You have multiple things at play here different than your Bushcraft knife: 1.) It's curved so if you put it on a table, part may stick out and if you "brush by" with the back of your hand, you could cut off your hand. 2.) It's long, so see point #1 about not brushing against it. 3.) Often not only is only-one-side of the knife sharp, but only one side of THAT one-side is sharpened....but it's razor sharp. So eventually you're going to cut yourself if you do not follow this advice herein. I just think this needs to be brought to people's attention as being "regular outdoors-y careful" landed me in the emergency room and thank God it was (I think) only stitches. One wrong slip and you're dead.

I personally use a draw knife that is really sharp

When I first got started being a broke kid lucky enough to have grandparents who once trapped got all traps stakes sifter n so on lock stock n barrel all but a fleshing knife i used a machete worked ok awkward no doubt how nice was to get n actually fleshing knife 2seasons later

I will say using an old lown more blade worls but it is rough.

I want this knifes brother

I got one of those basic standard knives and I can't stand it. I don't have a grinder and find out pointless to buy one just to sharpen a cheaply made crap knife. I've tried to sharpen the edge with stones and what not but it doesn't work. I also bought a tool that on some sites say it's a fleshing knives and some say it's a scraper. it only has one handle and doesn't really work any better.

Trying to use a large rasp as a fleshing knife doesn't work very well. Haha

What’s the best way to go about dulling the edge? I just went from the cheap skinny knife to a 16” fleshing knife from Green English. Much sturdier knife, but it came with both edges sharp & with my being used to the cheap skinny knife with the duller edges, I butchered the first beaver pelt I did. I did decrease the angle of my beam so that I was pushing out more than down.

I hate the square handles on the Post knife. They are very uncomfortable in my old hands. The Lee Steinmeyer knife is the perfect size and shape, and vey comfortable to use. The fact that it is beautifully hand made by a great gentleman, and fellow trapper, is just 'frosting on the cake'. I have the sharp on both side model, and rolled the edge on the 'pushing side' with a steel, just to 'tone it down a little'. Charlie

If fleshing is done with the help of grinder machine with steel cutting blade it becomes very easy

P.S. Him, along with myself, and YOU have filler words we use. That's a fact. His filler words are actually "you know" that he uses to combine thoughts but, that's fine. Because his message still gets through clearly and it's helpful to people not only focused on how he talks, but more so what his message is. I hope this helps you work on your character.
