As a retired veterinarian, your life would be a lot easier and faster if you would learn to use a pair of needle holders and thumb forceps as you are basically suturing skin. If you use needle holders, you will understand and appreciate the curved needle and it will make life easier. Also, you are spot on about "freshening" the edges.

Retired veterinarian who failed basic English. Your first sentence contains a misplaced modifier and is actually saying that the person to whom you're speaking is the retired veterinarian.

Being a novice at 75 years old, I watched everything I could about coyote and other critter trapping. Yours are hands down the best. Thanks for putting out the effort. Seems whenever I have a question you have the answer. I really needed the sewing lesson. I butchered my first coyote skinning it. Screwed up the face and sliced a huge hole fleshing. Continuing to work on my skills. 👍

For some reason, this is one area I've never had an issue with. I guess being a life-long First-Aid'er, and having a competent seamstress for a mother, gave me an advantage. Also, my wife works at a hospital and brings me home suture kits. They work like a charm, but have the curved needles. It's fleshing that's giving me grief... Was trying to use the board, but just built myself a beam that I'm about to try for the 1st time !

The first coyote I got was with a 300 Win Mag while deer hunting. Lots of stitching. The pressure through the shoulder blade blew a 12 inch rip in the off side. Some people might have thrown it out but it was my first and a nice one. It came out perfect and is hanging on my wall. Can't even tell from the outside. I just hated the middle school class where they made me learn how to sew. It is strange when and why a person uses what they are forcibly taught.
