I will never forget the night I worked a murder mystery dinner show at one of the nice restaurants in West L.A. and Lionel Richie and his family were in the audience. I was playing the husband of a woman who gets killed halfway through the show. The detective stood me up and started to question me about her. I got more emotional than usual about the questions. I apologized and improvised the line that she was Once, Twice, Three times a Lady (I actually sang the last part. Lionel Richie actually started banging on the table and laughing like crazy. After the show I walked up to him and asked him if I owed him any residuals for using his song. He waved me off and said that was great.
This is the proof the1970s have the BEST love songs of any decade released IN 1978,

I have to agree. The 70's here in Hawai'i gave us some of THE Best Unheard "Nationally" Love songs. Made in Hawaiian and English. Those of us who grew up had the opportunity to listen to music from Hawai'i . Mainland, Japan, Philippines, Korea, China. Though On the Radio only heard the Japanese station, Along with the AM stations. Amazing time growing up.
Jay & Amber, I predicted this would be your favorite of theirs, lets see if time bears that out! You'll love Lionel's "Truly" and "Endless Love" (with Diana Ross) !!!!!

“Endless Love” needs to be the next reaction from Lionel Richie.
Another absolutely beautiful song that the Commodores sang is “Still’. The Ultimate Romantic Ballad ❤
“Still” is a beautiful yet heartbreaking song. Give it a listen…
So long you did the longer version of this song. The shorter version you hear on the radio simply steals away so much richness of this song (and a whole verse too!).

Beautiful song from the Commodores, with the great vocals of Lionel Richie. 'Sail on' and Nightshift dedicated to Marvin Gaye' are a couple of others worth a reaction-Colin Ward

According to Richie, it's about his Mom (and his own wife), after his Dad made a speech praising her at their 37th wedding anniversary.

Kenny Rogers does a great cover of this beautiful song
One of the most beautiful love songs ever written, in my opinion. It gets me every time. ❤
Arguably one of the best love songs ever written!
The Commodores ballads are always top notch! Don't think you've done "Oh No" yet. Their last with Lionel in the band.
this brings back vivid memories of slow dances that I hadn't recalled in over 40 years...
He doesn't mean the end of the relationship. He means the beautiful pot of gold at the end
I was in 7th grade, the new kid on an Army post in far off Germany, I asked the most beautiful girl I had ever seen to dance with me. I was so shy but I asked anyway. My little heart fell in love with Katie Longey as we slow danced to this song. I will always remember that night and this song and Katie.
Yes, "Endless Love" with Lionel and Diana Ross is a must ❤
A song like this... it would have been great to had seen the both of them dance together!!! Half a million "likes" for sure!

The song was inspired by a toast that Lionel’s father gave to his grandmother during a party. Lionel wrote the song and dedicated it to his then wife, Brenda.

Omg what a great song..😢
This song went to #1 in 1978 and took Lionel Richie's career to another level. This was the first all-time classic love song written by Lionel Richie which would be followed by many more.
After so many years, this still sounds oh-so beautiful again to me!
The man could write a love song.
Lionel was pure gold through the 80s, everything he touched turned to gold #1s, singing, writing, or producing. He was/is one of my all time favorites.
I dedicated this to my mom and grandmother I know it's a love song, but I looked at it like Mom and grandmother were there for me most of my life, "the end of the rainbow" is like saying goodbye to them, until we meet again ♥️🙏✝️
Class of 1978 grad here--this was THE slow-jam (along with Heatwave's "Always & Forever")...that at school dances you reserved just for your girlfriend....or a girl you were TRYING to make your girlfriend! (that part @ 6:27 is when you would just close your eyes...hold her tighter...and just get high on the smell of her hair, her perfume....and just her SOUL!) Also...kudos for choosing the longer/album version instead of the shorter "chopped" radio version.
The best love song ever,my wife died over 30 years ago but I still tear up every time I hear this so thanks for finally reacting to it,brings back lots of good memories as well as sad ones.
This story comes second-hand, but it has the sound of something I hope is true. There was a man who sang this song tenderly to his wife as she lay dying in bed. As he finished, a tear ran down her cheek as she smiled and breathed her last. Imagine "the end of your rainbow" on this Earth hearing your beloved sing this to you, and when you open your eyes, you awaken to Eternity? *sigh*
Lionel is just special.

Great song that got plenty of air play. Everybody loved it.
I ALWAYS have and always will love this song!👍🙂
When he says “now that we’ve come to the end of our rainbow” other alternatives to them breaking up: they have grown old and have had a full and meaningful life or, at the end of a rainbow being a metaphor for a journey towards a goal and they have found their pot of gold (a beautiful and meaningful relationship and a successful life together).
The 70's were awesome. I was a teenager than and loved this so very much. Actually 50's, 60's and 70's were the best. No autotune just pure raw talent. Love your reactions!
Jay, if you didn't give your beautiful lady Amber a huge hug after you wrapped this taping, you should do so now. That was actually my all-time favorite Commodore's song, precisely because of the reasons you outlined.

The story of how The Commodores picked their group name is they just opened a dictionary and picked the first word they saw. They always joked about how they were almost known as "The Commodes"
@bunnyheywood

That is such a funny story....lol...they couldn't think of a name for their band so they closed their eyes and flipped through a dictionary and said whatever word their finger landed on ....that would become the band's name....and Lionel said thank goodness they didn't land on the word commode that was on the same page as commodore..... 🤣🤣🤣🤣

One of my mom and my favourite songs of the late 70s.
I'm always reminded of the legendary performance on SNL by Eddie Murphy, in character as the Li'l Rascals 'Buh-tweet' (Buckwheat), on a fake record commercial, singing his rendition of this song: "Unce, tice, fee tines a mady!" 😎
Best . Love . Song . Ever .

One of the simplest songs ever with a presentation that surpasses most others. Ritchie is an icon!
I’m crying and don’t know why but this song moves me this way😢

That was the ultimate wedding song even just as a the music
For someone who was not a slow song loving guy, Jay you were all up in that, lol!
Some other r&b groups to react to from around this era or earlier would be, The spinners - it’s a shame; Stylistics - people make the world go round, break up to make up, you are everything, i’m stone in love with you; Chi-lites - oh girl, (for god’s sake) give more power to the people; The undisputed truth - smiling faces sometimes; Friends of distinction - going in circles
