Lionel Ritchie. One of the last "Old Skool" love song composers left in our midst. I'm sure he composed all the Commodores songs while with them and then wrote more for his solo career. He also wrote many for other singers including "Lady" for Kenny Rogers and "We are the World" with Michael Jackson. So many hit songs. I was lucky enough to see Lionel in concert in New Zealand back in the 90's and he just did not disappoint. Awesome reaction Asia and BJ ❤️

Asia and BJ, I'm not sure if you'll see this but my wife and I have a special connection to the Commodores. She's from Tuskegee and we met in college in the 60's. It was nothing to see The Commodores on the yard or in the cafeteria. They were the house band at the Elks club on Friday nights. My wife grew up with Lionel and Ronald LaPread. We got married on campus and lived in Tuskegee for awhile and I got a chance to get to know them. It was truly a great time. And it was nice to see them become so successful. We even got to see them in concert a few times. And got to go backstage and hang out with them. I really enjoy your reactions. Thanks for the joy you bring❤

The message I always got from this song was that he was trying hard to be with his woman, please her, love her, and give her what she wanted. When she didn't reciprocate the feelings or the emotions, he finally decided that he'd had enough and was ready to move on (sail on) and try to enjoy his life while she lived her own miserable, negative one . . . without him.

Love The Commodors! Memories of Sadie Hawkins dances spring to mind where 7th grade boys stared out across the dance floor at 7th grade girls while trying to gather courage! Oh, they feature on the sound track for one of the better 80's teen angst movies that wasn't as popular as others back in the day. The movie is called, "The Last American Virgin" and it's absolutely heartbreaking. The entire movie comes down to the very last two minutes and literally tears into your soul. The soundtrack is awesome too!

Unlike today's music, artists like Lionel Ritchie & the Commodores were just that "ARTISTS." They created, from the heart, they feel what they were playing, they make us feel. They play their own instruments and write their own songs, unlike today's singers, who mostly have their songs written for them to sing, and do not play instruments. It's manufactured by a label for profit. The Commodores, and The Rolling Stones, and the rest of the innovators, to this day do not care about the money, They all started out as a cover band wanting to be like their idols, they went on and created their own style, and original songs. Today's music is just that a style, just like fashion, it's in today, and out tomorrow. Yesterday's music never get old and keeps making us feel because it is genuine from the heart. It is inspired.

They were multi-instrumentalist as well. Richie sang lead & background, played sax, piano, and synthesizers. William King played trumpet & guitar. Milan Williams played keyboards and guitar. Walter Orange played drums sang lead & background. All six of the sang harmony. The same is true of many BANDS of that era even those who did not achieve the same level of success.

The Commodores are basically an R&B band who had a string of memorable hits in the seventies and eighties. The group was led mostly by Lionel Richie who you can currently see as a judge on "American Idol". Lionel delved into several genres of music including country so it's no mistake that the song has a country feel to it. In fact, he wrote the song "Lady" for country singer Kenny Rogers.

A true artist, we all hear a different meaning. To me, "I gave you all of my time and money, Aint it a shame, I'm giving you back your name." Sounds like he was feeling like the fool who was played, and finally realizes it so he broke up with her and is reclaiming his dignity. "A small town boy like me just wasn't your cup of tea, I was wishful thinking." to me enhances that verse. A small town boy got played by a big city gal.

He wasn't getting a divorce just to find a good time. He finally wanted to be free after realizing he wasn't her "cup of tea" and everybody telling him she wasn't the one. So, particularly at the end, this song is a celebration of being out of something bad and starting life over. Hear that 3 part harmony at 2:40 (on the "It was"), btw? That's very country/bluegrass, as was the "wishful thankin" and other pronunciations.

The Commodores and later Lionel Richie solo; were very good at making what I call AM classics.. These were songs that you would listen to on AM radio while on long drives. I am not even sure if AM radio still exists. However, songs by Anita Baker, Temptations, Climaxx and hundreds of other artists from the 70's thru the early 90's used to make all of these mello R&B AM radio classics..

16, working the shoestring fry stand, directly beside the grandstand at the Ohio State Fair. 1979, these guys came and blew the roof off! The rest of the year this was my ‘park by the river at Como park with my girl and work on those night moves’ song! 😂. Ah yeah. It was good to be a teenager in 79 and The Commodores were there making it great. Love you guys. 🫡❤️👍🏼✌🏼

My favorite by the Commodores and really by Lionel Richie. The beginning part is wistful and regretful and then when it kicks in it's like liberation. Such a personal piece of gold.

"Easy" by the Commodores is a must. Everybody knows the guitar part in this song almost as much as the drum solo in "In The Air Tonight".

Thing I loved about the Comodores is that they were real time musicians ..the band was awesome. Try "Stuck on You" By Lionel.

Tim Mcgraw was joined on stage by Lionel Ritchie, and they connected well with this hit song I grew up with. Your totally right it has country written all over it.

You mentioned a country sound. Lionel Ritchie grew up on country music growing up in the South, but I love the soul they inject into this.

This song is stunning. Soooo BITTERSWEET. Pain, surrender and hope. Such an oldy. Still gut punches me. Always cry when I rarely hear it over the years.

When the song rolls up to "Sail On" outro, it sounds so good I wish they would have extended it a few more bars

Lionel could certainly write the breakup songs like nobody else. Also during his Commodores days he did "Oh No" and "Still" that evoke that same heartbreak without whining, which isn't easy to do. Thanks y'all for another great reaction.

Your comment was accurate- it was an r & b group doing their version of a country song. But more importantly, It was The Commodores. Just good music, call it whatever you want.

This version of the song was cut off. The last part of the song rides out on music and ad libs. It adds to the ambiance and meaning of the song. If you get a chance, find the album version of this song and check it out.

"I know it's a shame, but I'm givin' you back your name". One of the greatest lines in a love song. The most optimistic divorce song ever, although it's just a little bittersweet. As the saying goes, the best revenge is living well. Lionel is America's greatest writer of love songs in the R&B/R&R era.
