Hi Kristin, you’re right, it’s a great song! This was actually Lionel Richies goodby gift to the Commodores. As the relationship with the Commodores and Lionel Ritchie grew colder, Lionels penchant for ballads was taking over the songs the band was singing in concerts. Most of the Commodores saw themselves as a funk-blues band, Lionel was changing all that, so Lionel found himself being pushed out of the band. You will note a strong country sound to this song, a genre that a lot of the Commodores didn’t embrace. Also note that besides Lionel, only three other Commodores appear in this video. Put it in context of the relationship between Lionel and the Commodores, lines like “giving you back your name” take on a whole new meaning.

The Commodores, The Isley Brothers, The Gap Band, Cameo, Kool and the Gang, Earth Wind & Fire. All of those groups had real musicians playing instruments and writing their own songs. That is hard to find these days.

Lionel Ritchie was always a multi-faceted songwriter, there's such a wealth of styles he could pick from to tell his stories. The Commadores were seen at the time as existing in the disco/ soul/ funk world but this song fits very snugly into the country genre. Lionel was a songwriter who transcended genre.

If you can roller skate to it, it's a great timeless song. And Lionel Richie definitely got playtime at our local rink. Dancing on the ceiling, running with the night, etc.

Lionel Ritchie is the greatest writer of love songs in the R&R era. Try "Truly", "My Love", "Still", "Easy", of course "Hello", "Penny Lover", "Stuck On You", "You Mean More To Me", "Ballerina Girl", and You Are". "I know it's a shame, but I'm giving you back your name". Priceless.

What really makes this song work for me is how they are dressed, the time they were jamming in, compared to the smoothness of the lyrics, singing, and melody.

I guess I always thought that Music like this would be on the Radio FOREVER!!! but it's like every 10 years, the Music industry flips a switch and changes everything. I HOPE that people are still writing and Singing music like this today. I wish I could go back, but just a Billy Joel wrote "Cause the good ole days weren't Always good And tomorrow ain't as bad as it seems....." I still have Hope for Tomorrow!!! Peace!

We DID NOT take this music for granite even 50 years ago..TO whoever made that comment. Iwas born and grew up in the 40's 50's 60's and we LOVED and Cherished our singers back then, UNLIKE today where it's all about the MONEY and NO TALENT, Just yelling and a Whole Lot of Autotune. How dare you say it was Unappreciated and Taken for granite. For you to say that, you couldn't even have been born in my era and Never lived it. The music from the 50's 60's 70's even 80's was loved and cherished back then, that's why we still play it on our 45 and 78 RPMs. to date. I take that remark Personal.
