Beaten up U.S. Army lensatic compass restoration - Restoring militaria
I restored this old U.S. Army lensatic tritium compass, which is very worn and the lenses are so dirty and scratched it is a bit hard to see through. The magnifying glass was completely impossible to use. It is also missing the lanyard. This is a quite simple restoration and service project.
I started the project with a disassembly. I had to drill out the rivet from one of the other hinge had a spring pin which I hammered out. Other than that the whole compass was held together with 4 screws and a sort of a lock ring (I hate putting those back in by the way). This one was not an actual ring but the idea was the same.
After the disassembly I used paint stripper to remove the old paint. I thought That is probably the least abrasive method as the body is made of aluminium. Also one of the pieces had a rubber gasket and other one had delicate pieces of tritium and wire which I was not able to remove without causing any damage. Paint tripper allowed me to remove the paint without damaging those parts.
After removing the paint I put on a coat of primer and military grade paint. It has great NIR (near infra red) reflecting values. That means it will be much harder to detect with night vision. It will look the same color as leaves etc. Normal paint is usually only hard to detect in daylight but with night vision it stands out because it reflect NIR light differently.
After painting I cleaned the lenses. I thought all of them were very scratched but only the magnifying glass was scratched. I Used car polish compound and resin polish to remove the scratches and make it usable again.
After assembly I used paracord to make a new cord for it. I could have gone with something fancy with complex knots etc. but I decided to make just a simple cord, similar to what it used to have back in the day.

As a guy IN the Army who has USED one of those, I can proudly say that you restored it to better than actual Army standard. Kudos to you.

I found my old Lensatic Compass a bit ago, remembering all the kilometres I trekked over 11 years in the Army. Back before "GPS" in fact I helped to test some of the early gps receivers, anyway I was having some painting done in my house and the contractor had his young son with him. The kid was amazed by my military photos, so I gave him my compass and told him I was able to find my way around the world with it. His eye got wide and ran outside and had a blast. Now his world has opened up. fun memories.

I really like how your workshop slowly gets that surgery room vibe. First the gloves and stainless steel tweezers and now the kidney bowl for screws! I wonder what comes next!
The thing about chuck norris’ kids using brass tooth brushes is amazing. I can’t say I was expecting that
But can you also fix Jack Sparrow's compass? It's a bit broken.

As someone with severe Misophonia and a tendency to jump at sudden sharp sounds (even when I know they're coming) I have no idea why these videos are so therapeutic and mesmerising to watch but they are! As always full of subtle humour and end result is fantastic
I used that compass model back in my military days. It was just an amazing and durable piece of hardware. It really helped me out of some jams. Thank you for this video. Excellent work as always.

I love your videos so much. They have not only taught me a lot about electronics, metals, and chemical reactions, but they are a great way to relax after a long day!!
I followed the compass ages ago! Thanks for another quality restoration.
Absolutely awesome restoration on this U.S. Army lensatic compass !!!!!!!!! I still have my Fathers Old U.S. Army lensatic compass, when he was in the Army an went to Panama in the 80's. Two thumbs way up, Sir !!!!!!!!!!!
When youre in the year one and you change the direction of a compass with a magnet :Reality can be whatever i want
I remember commenting some months ago that you should upgrade your paint stripper and I'm super glad that you did. Amazing video as always!
Man, these types of videos always remind me of that scene in Toy Story 2 where the old man fixes up Woody. Always satisfying to see the end result.
I appreciate the effort that went into editing this video and that stellar humour! A+
The near constant jokes in this kept getting me
I spent 9 years in the US Army, from 95-04. This is the compass I learned to use in basic training, and I still own one. Great video!
Not gonna lie, when the caption mentioned that it was military-grade camouflage paint, I was expecting to see one coat of paint sprayed on the compass, cut to another coat sprayed on the compass, cut to the compass isn't there, just the wire, but he's spraying it anyways as if the compass had been completely camouflaged into its surroundings.
Thank you for posting this. You did a nice job on the restore and reminded me that the Land Navigation Course was one of my favorite places when i was in the Army.
Absolutely amazing. You truly do amazing work and thank you for restoring pieces of technology (that was new at the time), tools, and equipment so if people want know how to do it properly.
Immaculate restoration job! It looks brand new!
This is really cool! Keep up the awesome restorations!

Great job. The OD green paint made the piece looked brand new. Thanks for the video. Stay safe.
This channel calms me down when I feel like everything is fucked.
Seeing a new one of these videos go up makes my day. I did miss the ducktor though.
I was given one of these when I was 14 years old as new in the belt case. I used it all over the world to sighte in microwave antennas. It still is in fine shape and as new after 60 years!
i had such a bad day - this is just what i needed to wind down. thank you. 💖
Oh that's really cool! My grandfather bought me a similar compass when I was a kid!
Oh hey, I still have my army compass. I still have most of my army gear actually because it was 'Damaged or rendered inoperable during wartime deployment' so C.I.S couldn't charge me for it. Kind of my squad leader to sign off on that paper work :P

My dad kept almost everything he had in the army..... all of it is in brand new/used condition but all functional... half of it is outdated gear and it would make sense if he kept that but he also has more modern stuff which when he left was not outdated or damaged to the point where it couldn't be used so i don't know why he got to keep it
Wished I had the skills to do things like this! I love watching your videos!

Love the new colour on it, so much better. Looks brand new
Excellent instructional video. I had no idea this could be done by the average person. I've got a couple of beat up compasses that served me well for over 20 years in the Army. Might have to give this a try. You should offer this as a service.

Very Good Job!!! I used one of these when I was in the US Army. The one I used was a little darker green and all the letters and lines and numbers were filled-in with like a cream or a tan color.

That pen you used at 11:42 makes me feel so nostalgic. I had that same SM-Liiga pen as a kid and if I remember correctly the pen had an eraser shaped like a hockey blade at the top so the whole pen looked like an ice hockey stick.
Even added the dummy cord so some dumb boot doesn’t lose it, causing the whole Company lose libo 😂
