Restoring Broken GoPro Hero 3+ a Subscriber Sent Me - Action Camera Restoration
Go to nordvpn.com/oddtinkering or use code oddtinkering to get a 2-year plan with a huge discount! This GoPro was sent to me to be restored and repaired by a subscriber who didn't have any use for it. The camera was released by GoPro on 2012.
The camera has some visual damage, the USB port is damaged and the lens has some scratches. When I tested it it wouldn't stay on but it would just keep turning on and off after few seconds. There is also some dust on the sensor which causes dark spots on the video and pictures.
The GoPro was disassembled. And I noticed one of the connectors had gone loose. Probably after falling or lot of vibration. After putting the connector back the camera worked normally. Now I could see what the image was like. There were some dots caused by dust particles on the sensor. I took the sensor off and cleaned it gently with a dry q-tip.
Next I repainted the front cover. I started with sanding and filling all dents with filler. Next it was coated with plastic primer to ensure teh paints stays on. I also remade the logo with a water transfer image that I printed out. Finally everything was clear coated to protect it further.
I polished the lens and LCD screen to remove scratches. Acrylic polishing compound was used for the screen and glass polish compound was used for the lens. I also used a special glass polishing pad because glass is very hard and polishing it by hand would take a long time.

Note to most people: DO NOT clean an image sensor with a q-tip and alcohol unless you REALLY know what you're doing. For most image sensors you should use a lint-free microfiber flexible swab designed for cleaning image sensors and methanol instead of isopropyl alcohol. Otherwise you run a major risk of permanently damaging the sensor.

obviously correct, but we are all here for the spirit of the game. An old GoPro isn't worth all that patience and expert effort anyway. There are plenty good used ones, but this is a restoration channel. And there is no human way to re-apply a correct factory-grade coating on a lens without proper industrial equipment. So degraded as it is, it works and it looks the part, which in a world of disposable equipment and planned obsolescence is worth commending.

What I've learned from your channel is despite the fact consumer goods do everything in their power to convince you to throw them away and try to stop you from repairing them, a little bit of patience can fix a lot more than I'd think.

This man is a damn genius. And pure joy to watch.
Helpful hint with waterslide decals. A few drops of Microsol under the decal to make it look like it was painted on (it's a mild solvent that melts the decal slightly onto the surface so ridges and seams don't cause bubbles or silvering), and then clear coat over it after it is completely dry

Yes, it does. I suspect the scratches were only in this coating (anti-reflective coating or AR) which made it fairly easy to polish out. Scratches in the actual glass would be harder to deal with.
