New subscriber here i just ordered the same upper from BCA last Friday 4/19/24 supposed to be here tomorrow 4/23/24 . With that being said i seen the specs on BCA page that they recommend 100 grain so as a reloader i worked up 20 rounds of 243 with Hodgens Varget powder and Hornady 100 grain BTSP can't wait to see how they do in that upper. Nice series on this rifle. I have one coming for review on my channel but in the 20" version. Hopfully the precision is as good as youve shown with yours. Its pretty common for the gas ports to be a little off on their AR10s from my experience with them. Thankfully its an easy fix. Like em or not BCA offers a lot of rifle for the money. Thanks for your kind words here. I am looking forward to seeing the possibilities of this rifle after it was returned to me. I wanted BCA to do the fix and test the rifle in their facilities in case there were other contributing factors to the lack of proper function. BCA provides only a fixed Gas Block, so they should add my return rifle problems to their future production quality control protocol.

@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009 Yeah the ones I had issues with I opened up the gas port to the next size drill and installed an Aero adjustable block with tube and had zero issues after that. Then I also had one of their 308 carbines that ran 100% from day one. Each rifle is an animal to its own for sure.

I am so sorry you have been ill, Dave. Very happy to see you back. I will say, I have not had great luck with Federal Fusion. Pretty crazy that the velocities were so low. God bless and looking forward to all of your videos in 2024.

Good stuff Dave! Can't wait to see how your handloads do. I too am getting over some sickness, came down with it New Year day. Out doing some late season archery hunting, to no avail! Good thing is I shot a nice 8 point back on Nov. 4th. & got a big doe with my 300BK during the gun season!!!

Hey Dave. I chronographed the same federal fusion load 95 gr 243 and velocities were only in upper 2700’s. Little faster than what you got but still slow for the 243. Those Winchester super x line of ammo always seems to be loaded hot and some to hot. I chrono about everything I shoot factory and reloads and Winchester factory ammo seems to never disappoint with velocity. I don’t what bullets who plan on loading but the 85 gr Sierra hpbt seems to be tried and true bullet for the 243 for accuracy and performance on game. Thanks Dave keep the videos coming

Yes, those Fusions are a mystery indeed. They only had 36.5 grains of a short stick extruded powder. Yes I have tested the Sierra and Speer 85 grain bullets in my Bolt action and had excellent results.

WOW! That Fusion is very disappointing. My 6 ARC gets better velocities with a 22" barrel. 2850 with a 90gr and a little over 2700 with a 105gr. Great video! 👍

Yeap. Definitely an anomaly. Usually Federal ammo is spot on with their box listed velocities.

95 grain Federal Fusion is pretty much my go to round in .243. I'm getting around 2830fps out of my 20" PSA build with no malfunctions of any type. 100 gr Winchester seen to be another hunting round it seems to really like. So far the Fusion's been a freezer filler when it comes to whitetail and hogs. I've taken maybe 9 deer with my .243 AR-10 and only had to track two. Neither when further than about 30 yards for where the were hit. The others dropped right there. It had to be a bad lot. Be sure to let us know what you find out. Good video.

I like the Fusion bullet for terminal performance on game as well. I deconstructed the Fusion and found only 36.5 grains of a stick powder. But I will double check in my bolt action to verify the unacceptable low velocity.

@@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009 Yeah that was very low for the Fusion 95gr .243. One thing I always loved about it was it was consistent. I was getting right around advertised velocities out my 24" Remington 700, 22" Howa 1500, and Ruger American Predator.

Hi Dave. Love the channel. I also love the federal fusion for the bullet and price per quality of said bullet. However, like you I find them to be well under stayed velocity and underpowered. I don't understand why federal is doing this to this offering. I use federal powershok blue box and they have always been fantastic. Federal needs to look into this problem with the fusion line. My hand loads with Fusion bonded bullets performed very well in terms of Velocity and on game performance. Thanks for sharing your experiences here.

Hi Dave, Not sure if my thought is the issue but…I’ve noticed that Federal now has their Fusion ammo in the Fusion MSR branding. Meaning, Modern Sporting Rifle. That said, and I’m completely guessing here, my thought is Federal likely saw a problem with the standard Fusion and made “charging” changes for the AR-15/AR-10/etc platforms. Just a thought that may provide some additional detail on your shooting issue. That said, I too am a big fan of the Fusion ammo but I shoot 90 bolt action fired. The Fusion rarely, if at all, ever disappoints.

Yes, your observations are great. But in this case this box is not the MSR type and I just pointed out the inconsistency of the box stated velocity and actual velocity from my rifle. I will try the factory fusion in my bolt action 243 to see if there is a distance.

Dave, I was curious about the 243 in the AR platform. Think I’ll stick with my 6.5 Grendel. I also am fond of the 308 but I was curious. I will check out your 243 hand load videos though.

Thanks for your kind words. The answer to your question (Coyote rifle, platform) is answered by asking you questions. 1. Do you plan to save the pelts?. 2. Day or night hunting?. 3. Expected distance to target? 4. Type of hunting, ie: Spot and Stalk or calling from a fixed position? 5. What type of rifle action are you most comfortable and confident using now?... I am new to the MSR platforms but prefer them for fast follow up shots and the ability to stay on the scope. Any high velocity .22 cal. through 25 cal. works well. 55 grain to 100 grain varmint constructed projectile is preferred.

I picked up a used Handi rifle a few years ago, in .243 (during the ammo shortage) and Federal was the only factory ammo I could find.. it shot so poorly I ended up having the barrel recrowned, figuring something was wrong with the gun.. I reloaded ammo while waiting for the gunsmith, and once I got it back, I shot some sub 1" groups with a variety of my handloads.. I decided to burn the rest of the box of Federal, just to see.. I have shotguns that grouped tighter!

Usually Federal ammo is pretty good. In this case I need to do some cartridge de-constructing to find out why the lower velocity. The 100 grain Federal Power Shok factory ammo velocity was exact as listed on the box and sub-MOA when tested in this rifle.

@@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009 I have had mixed results (over the last 3 decades) with Federal ammo, I usually consider it "bargain/ practice" ammo... it almost seems like you got a batch of their "reduced recoil" loads, obviously not enough umph to cycle the action.. maybe try it in a bolt/ single shot and see how it does (velocity wise), if you have one (I'm pretty sure you do!)

I weighed the powder and it was only 36.5 grains of small short cut extruded powder. I do not know if Federal uses a proprietary powder. I pulled one of the 100 grain Federal Blue Box and that powder was a Ball powder and weighed a more normal 42.2 gns. with a velocity of 2980 fps. in this rifle

I'm gonna see if I can find a box around me, and run it thru my Handi Rifle (16" barrel? not here right now) and my Savage Predator (22"). Hopefully my old shooting chrony will work, it doesn't like the low winter sun angle ;) maybe time to invest in a magnetospeed!

I have a 243 bolt action it would not group with that same federal fusion ammo and it shoots less then 1 inch groups with everything I have shot in it

AWE, I had been wondering about this rifle! I have 2 in bolt. One is an old 71 Mossberg that is rare. Only 400 ever made. 1.Winchester XP are looking good. 2.Federal Fusion seam to be wrong on the powder! Winchester Super were looking great till that last flyer. I would like to know the load on the 80 Gr. That about my loads.

Yes, but in this case when I de constructed the fusion cartridge the powder was a short stick extruded powder 36.5 grains. The only non proprietary powders in the Speer manual that have that light of a load is H-4895 and Varget. both are temp insensitive.

I do not know. I will deconstruct a round and weigh the powder and compare against similar powders of the same grain weight in the Speer manual.
