I'm excited about finally having tile backer on the walls and starting to close them up! One thing I did not cover here that is covered in the DensShield vs. Drywall video is that the screws should be installed flush with DensShield's moisture barrier as opposed to countersinking them. Also, more screws were added at the blocking between the lower board and the upper board. The screws I used were Grip-Rite PrimeGuard 1-5/8" exterior screws. Lesson learned: I will most likely cut the DensShield next time instead of installing full sheets on the left and right walls - created too much of a gap at the tub flange to make sure it fit. Also, I may end the DensShield a little closer to the edge of the tub and not so far into the room in the upstairs bathroom so I don't have to skim coat to paint over it. I'm anxious to carry forward what I've learned so far on this project to the next one. *Please leave a 👍 and share the video!* 👉 Visit our website ► DIYApprentice.com 👉 Click to Subscribe! ► bit.ly/2pEBg3m 👍▬▬Follow Us on Social Media▬▬👍 ✔️ Facebook ► bit.ly/2pAY8S3 ✔️ Twitter ► bit.ly/2G7mRDz ✔️ Instagram ► bit.ly/2ILEKII 🔧▬▬Tools and Materials▬▬🔧 ✔️ DIY Apprentice Recommended Tools and Materials ► bit.ly/2T5psFw ✔️ DeWalt DW272 VSR Drywall Screwdriver ► amzn.to/2zpguKT ✔️ DeWalt DW272 Nose Piece ► amzn.to/2zpgqLa ✔️ DeWalt DW272 Carbon Brushes ► amzn.to/2xODuRw 👉 Dewalt DW272 Review www.youtube.com/watch?v=iEFbn... 📷▬▬Video Equipment▬▬📷 ✔️ Camera used ► amzn.to/2GcpkOb ✔️ Lens used ► amzn.to/2Deu16S ✔️ Tripod ► amzn.to/2GbaM1c ✔️ RAM Suction Mount ► amzn.to/2Wz9PXh ✔️ Cyberlink PowerDirector ► bit.ly/2jTwGxT ✔️ Adobe Photoshop ► bit.ly/2V7nyUX ✔️ Camera Slider ► amzn.to/2WtD7GW ✔️ Deity V-Mic D3 Super-Cardioid Directional Shotgun Microphone ► amzn.to/2LI1lf7
Thank you! The clear diagrams are really helpful. Love the novice's perspective - nice to actually learn something instead of struggle to keep up.

Great video thank you! I love the pace you go at, the detail you explain and the fact that when something goes awry (for example with the rotozip) then you explain that too. I’m looking forward to the next videos.

Thanks. Appreciate it. I try to remember to not filter out my mistakes or lessons learned - not everything is included :-). Hopefully, it gives people confidence to do it themselves and not repeat my mistakes.
Great video, your a good instructor who explains clearly and with proper detail. Im about to endeavor on the same project using densshield and this was the exact video that i needed. Do you know if kerdi band be used at the joint seams. Georgia pacific calls for fiber tape
@DIYApprentice

My understanding is that others have used Kerdi band on DensShield seams. I'm probably going to follow Georgia-Pacific's instructions. Thanks for watching the video.
Hey man, thanks for the video(s). One question, how did you end up anchoring the pan to the wall/floor. I know with cheaper once they just drill through it to the stud but I was wondering how that is handled in a cast iron pan. Thanks :D

The cast iron tub is resting on metal shims under the feet. I installed it per Kohler's instructions: kzread.info/dash/bejne/lqJlt7KNg6-0m9Y.html

@@DIYApprentice thanks for your reply. Sorry I missed you addressing this question in your pinned comment. That's crazy it's so heavy that it doesn't call for any anchoring screws, just shims for leveling.
@DIYApprentice

@@seanzoz Yes, it's very heavy. Some installers use other methods such as embedding the feet in cement.

@@seanzoz The weight of cast iron tubs are a blessing and a curse - no need to fasten but a pain to remove. Modern steel tubs weigh significantly less and can be fastened to the studs using screws and fender washers. Steel tub so much easier to lift and install but the screws and washers can create a little extra work putting up the backer

Just posted another video.
I am really concerned now that I see that they installed the densshield yellow side out . My back exterior wall is not densshield it's purple water board . Installed correctly , but what about the situation with the yellow side out . I have resssed shower uses on both sides. All adhesive in place etc. What can I do to make this work
@DIYApprentice

I would contact Georgia-Pacific to ask about this situation. You may be able to get away with covering it with another membrane material. buildgp.com/contact-us/

GP SAID THE BACK WALL IS NOT THE DENSSHIELD AND THE PROPER RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THAT IS A MEMBRANE APPLED WITH THE MANAFAFACURES RECOMMENDATIONS FOR INSTALL. AS TO THE YELLOW BOARD OUT AND THE GREY WATER PROOF ON THE BACKSIDE . I SENT THEM PICS OF THE MATERIALS USED FOR INSULATION AND VAPOR BARIER WHICH IS NONE EXCEPT FOR EXTERIOR WALL. THEY SENT IT TO THERE ENGINEERING TO GET A RESPONSE. AS SHE HAS NEVER HAD THIS EXPERIENCE WITH A CLIENT. SOUNDS LIKE SHE IS NEW, BUT I WOULD LOVE TO ASK THE COMUNITY OF TILE INSTALLERS IF IT CAN BE DONE. I NO FOR SURE IT WILL VOID RHE WARRANTY AS IT WAS NOT INSTALLED CORRECTLY BUT WOULD KERDI IR ANOTHET PRODUCT OVER THE TOP REALLY BE A ISSUE? BOTH SIDES ARE WATER PROOF ? WOULD THAT CAUSE CONDENSATION? I DON'T KNOW. WHAT DOES THE YELLOW UP AGAINST A VAPOR BARRIER DO ANY WAY . MY YELLOW IS NOT AGAINST THE VAPOR BARRIER JUST STUDS AND NO INSULATION ON INTERIOR WALLS. I REALIZE THAT I CANT JUST TILE IVER THE YELLOW? ANYONE ELSE EVER BEEN UP AGAINST THIS. I AM WAITING ON A CALL FROM GP for a answer. Let me know your thoughts on the back wall and what you would use on the water board . And if anyone else has a good idea.

@@kevinvandenberg1696 I'll throw in my two cents, and hopefully someone else with more experience will chime in. My understanding is that a product like Kerdi can be installed over moisture-resistant drywall such as the purple drywall on your exterior wall. Regarding the yellow side of the DensShield facing the room, I would worry about the fiberglass surface separating from any membrane and subsequent tile installed on top of it over time. Frankly, I wouldn't feel good about the installer completing this job if they can't get the prep done correctly.
Backer board can’t ever sit inside the tab. No amount of caulking will prevent water to get and soak backer board. This is why showers fail and you don’t point this in this video. Very wrong. Backer board needs to sit on the top of the lip or even better 1/8 above the lip. You could put some caulking there but it’s not necessary

Yes, I would agree that it's best to install the backer material on top of the tub lip - should have been more specific about other reasons for installing it above the tub lip.
