Bathroom Remodel 63 - Installing DensShield Tile Backer 2 of 3
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
This is part 2 of 3 on installing DensShield tile backer in the tub surround. I had to make quite a few corrections to the walls and ceiling then I installed the left backer board. Right backer board installation will be included in the next video.
Also, a couple important things: (1) I chose to end the DensShield outside the tub surround then I could skim coat any DensShield that is left uncovered by tile, but it is best to end it sooner so that the tile covers the transition to drywall. A plumbing situation in the right wall made it impossible to end the DensShield sooner. (2) I chose to install full sheets of DensShield on the left and right walls to avoid having to install blocking at seams - DensShield tech guide: "For walls, when used as a tile substrate a minimum 20-gauge* (33 mils) steel or wood framing should be spaced no greater than 16” (406 mm) o.c. or 24” (610 mm) with blocking at all joints for 1/2” (12.7 mm) DensShield Tile Backer and 24” (610 mm) o.c. for 5/8” (15.9 mm) DensShield Tile Backer. Board can be applied horizontally or vertically."

I hope you enjoyed the video. It was a LONG three or so weeks to get to this point, and I'm glad I took a step back to hopefully get this right. Did you verify with GP that the Hydroban Adhesive and Sealant was compatible with Densshield instead of the recommended 100% silicone?

Shouldn't you leave 1/8" gaps on either side of the DensShield to allow for expansion, like any drywall? Are you pointing out that there's a gap? You should be able to Keri membrane over all the seams to waterproof them regardless. I am putting densshield in my shower as we speak & it is so hard to find the info on if the boards should be a tight fit between sides or allow for expansion.

DensShield should not have gaps between panels. I left gaps between the tub lip and the bottom of the left and right panels so I could install them as full sheets and not damage them; framing and plumbing modifications didn't allow for a more conventional installation. I covered over the DensShield seams and gaps in later videos in this series. If you're doing a full shower, a minimum 1/8" gap is required between the DensShield and the shower pan. Here are some installation instructions: pdf.lowes.com/productdocuments/1554ad3b-3998-4aa9-958d-6bc9d1cb74de/03291688.pdf

@@DIYApprentice Cheers mate. I think I will cover it all in Keri once installed, just for additional peace of mind lol.

@@DIYApprentice I left a bit of a gap of course between both sides of the shower stall on the studs and the dens shield

Are you talking about covering the whole board with a liquid membrane or just vulnerable areas such as seams, corners, and screw penetrations?

@@DIYApprentice Anywhere that would come in contact with water. I know that is overkill but overkill is better than damages later on.

@@terekn2915 Yes, I agree that it's not a bad idea to cover the whole board with liquid membrane; GP does mention it in their installation materials, also.
What type of screws should I use for 1/2” denshield attached to 2x4 wood studs? And what size?

I used 1-5/8" Grip-Rite Prime Guard exterior screws; the screws should be corrosion resistant. Corrosion-resistant drywall screws may work fine. Here are a couple videos that might be useful: kzread.info/dash/bejne/d357q7WwkdeaY6g.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/aKqH08qahpvXkrw.html
