Your tile backer does not go over the flange,It butts into the flange otherwise you're Tilebacker will be setting in water all the time and will wicked moisture to your framing. It should be sittin a little less than flush with the sheetrock to Leave room for the thin set And a little Fatter than the flange so That your tile will go over the tile backer, over the flange And over the sheetrock On the edges. And seal that little gap between the back of the tile and the tub flange With a 100% waterproof sealer, not silicone.

As a remodeler I can tell you the real problem with showers leaking it mostly the structure and framing and possibly settling of the house... These things shift or move the subfloor or framing around the shower slightly.. and cause the cracks and failure of grout etc...and that's where the leak is... If the structure is very solid and good thick subfloor plywood is used and fastened correctly .. then simple cement board and tile with grout can last longer than you will live...

@@GenesisG70LaunchEdition you are in a very small minority of people who will go thru the expense to do that. There is nothing wrong with overkill if you want it and will pay for it. I have an engineering degree, and always over kill the jobs I do. But for a shower if framing and flooring all strong and secure you should be good without kerdi... Just like you can wear a mask out everyday for the rest of you life if you want to is overkill.

My company, and probably this guy, warrantees our work. As far as a waste of money, you don't buy the material in pieces you get whole rolls. So using shit that you already have and the extra 10 mins of your time is worth the homeowners and your piece of mind knowing that it's going to never have any water issues. At least half of the work we get is from repeat customers and their referrals. Going that extra mile, especially when it is something cheap or free, is what makes a happy customer which leads to them marketing for you for free.

That is the dumbest shit I’ve seen. I have never once in my life done this as a tile setter and have never had a tub surround leak. The flange is there to protect from water wicking up your wall. You literally made it worse doing this. Just tile it throw some silicone and it will be fine. Water won’t sit there long enough to damage anything

Really? A cheap acrylic shower pan, and improper manufacturer installation of Kerdi Band. V NOTCH . And Non Modified mortar. Watch some you tube to learn how to do it rather than have these people on that don’t any better think you actually know what you are doing. You can’t play Lincoln logs with Legos.

It's enamel clad steel shower base. I used one to cut down on all the grout cleaning of a tiled base.

You could do what Tile Chick does. Cut a sliver off the back of the foam, slide it over the lip and set it into a normal size bead of sealant.
