    This is correct. Mesh is stronger than paper. I've had to use the giant mesh roll on whole ceilings that were falling apart.

    Mesh can only handle tension along its length or width (the direction of its grid). Paper can handle that as well as some shear, and so many cracks in new construction are the result of shear between two surfaces.

    At least 20 years ago, I taped a crack in my mother's hallway. The plaster has come slightly loose, if you push on it gently it will move in and out, but the crack never reappeared. If I would have used mesh, you would absolutely see the crack at this point

    Really? I find that Fibafuse is way better because I don't get bubbles which you can always see the tape if there is a bubble. Are u talking about joints? Because I don't remember my walls ever cracking.

  • @mjonesftwtx

    @mjonesftwtx

    Ай бұрын

    @@reneeschwenig7164your tape is bubbling because there’s not enough mud underneath in that area. Scrape texture around patch smooth as you can so when you apply your tape your knife will lay flat on the paper, easing the mud out more efficiently. If you’re patching smooth walls it’s so much easier than roughly textured surfaces.

    now you've lost it. following that logic you would never use mesh tape for new drywall because every piece butted up to another piece is considered a crack. Mesh allows for more mud to hold the tape whereas paper tape can get bubbles underneath and create problems. Doesn't matter which tape you use it's how you mud it that matters.

    Mesh for quick job, tape for good job. I once bought a mesh not knowing it is worse, and now I rarely use it. I only use it for parches in the middle of a board, or when the board is screwed on a flat surface and not on studs. I will never buy again once I run out of it. Mesh is equal to tape in some cases, and worse in other cases. But it is never better.
