No one can vocally convey the combination of sadness and anger like Barbra, and this is a prime example of her mastery.

Yes, it’s lost in the fogs of time, but I remember a Rolling Stone review that mentioned her ability to “lord it over” her orchestra. Funny way to put it.

Columbia Records had to scramble to put together an album for Barbra to capitalize on "The Way We Were" 's success as a single and a movie. They took songs out the vault, from a TV special, and also had Barbra record a couple of new tracks to fill out the program. This one was from 1970 and was originally meant for her film "The Owl and the Pussycat". The producer of the movie "The Way We Were", Ray Stark, later blocked her from calling the album "The Way We Were" because of the competing soundtrack album, so Columbia began pressing the record with the amusing title of "Barbra Streisand Sings The Way We Were and All in Love Is Fair". Luckily, it went to #1 and everyone was happy.

I bee-leeve Docktah IQ four songs of the 10 were new recordings (TWWW, "All in Love is Fair", "Being at War with Each Other", and "Something So Right".) "Summer Me, Winter Me" was also intended for "The Owl and the Pussycat." (Wouldn't that have been bizarre!?). Which one was for a TV special?

@@BrettTwinSavage "My Buddy/How About Me" is from "Belle of 14rh Street" (one of the few good numbers from "Belle of 14th Street"!). I'm not sure about "Summer Me"--Wikipedia lumps them together as dropped songs from "Pussycat", but I believe "Summer Me" was possibly meant for another project and was then used as the "Best Thing" 45 B-side.

@@BrettTwinSavage My thoughts exactly! "Pieces of Dreams": is from a good movie with Robert Forster and Lauren Hutton (he's a priest in love), but Barbra's version is not heard in the film.

that performance and so many others proves Barbra is the best there ever was -Is-and ever will be. No match-no way - not ever fullstop( I don’t want to hear Celine, Whitney, Diana, Adele, Gaga, Bette and for godsakes not Cher!)

This song was actually recorded in 1970, to be used in Barbra’s Film, The Owl and the Pussycat! Since it wasn’t used in the Film, it was added to The Way We Were Album, along with a few more songs , that were recorded that year!

I've always been lovin' that bass, too! This album has a complicated history, but I'll let someone else cover that while I lead with the basics! 😆 The album was released in January of 1974 and would go to #1 that March.
