The Manner/Black Hole set from an online mini-concert they did during the Pandemic. The first is pure funk groove; the second is ear bleeding thrash.

Thank you for your wonderful comment. They are a rock band. However, it has transcended the boundaries of conventional rock such as heavy metal, hard, and progressive. I think they are one of the best rock bands in the world right now. There are many videos that have been released for free recently, so please enjoy them. (using translation software)

Pigeon-Hole. We Maidiacs call it the pigeon-hole. Why, you ask? Miku Kobato, the band's founder, rhythm guitarist, and primary lyricist, considers herself a reincarnation of an 810 year old pigeon. She ends every sentence with "po", which she considers pigeon speak. Quirky, funny, talented, driven and, simply, adorable is the best way to describe Miku Kobato.

With BAND-MAID it's not a Rabbit Hole. Just like BabyMetal have their Fox Hole, BAND-MAID have the Pigeon Hole. The deeper you dive the more it will make sense. In Japan pigeons don't Coo they Cluppo. Which is why Miku Konbato, Kobato mean Little Pigeon, ends her sentences in Po. Zemaitis has made her Signature Guitar the "Flappy Pigeon" available to the the public. However, you can't pigeonhole their music. They never stick to a single genre, sometime not even in a single song. There's something for everyone. I'm going to suggest the OMV for 'Shambles' Usually the LIVEs are the best, but I prefer this one. It was commissioned are the season two closing theme for the Netflix anime, Kengan Ashura. It's very heavy one.

When reactors ask about the diversity of BAND-MAID, I have to recommend the double live video of "Manners/Black Hole. Two songs from different ends of the spectrum. Black Hole is an astonishing piece of music. Kanami didn't follow the normal music theory protocols when she wrote that one. You'll see what I mean.

“Freedom” is good old arena rock/pop fusion with the Maid Magic thrown around. Mötley Crüe meets ABBA. I would argue it takes more than ten Maid songs before you get a handle on what they do. Most artists find what works and don’t stray too far from what got them noticed. Band Maid is absolutely not that. They are fearlessly creative. While “Freedom” has the arena pop rock feel; I’ve suggested “Moratorium,” which is their alternative metal serving with those pop sensibilities. The solo bridge is…you have to hear it. They also put out post hardcore punk colored rock but add enough complexity and dynamics that Berklee students can study it. Finest example is arguably “Blooming.” Each member wrote a melodic segment that Kanami mixed up and popped in her EasyBake Maid oven. The result? A darn near perfect pop punk song. Enjoy the ride! With normal bands, you would pretty much have seen everything already. The Maids still have some surprises left

The backing vocals are done by the rhythm guitarist, who is actually the founder and leader of the band. She was the original lead singer, but she decided that in order to take the band to a higher level the needed a better vocalist, but she still does some lead vocals.

Despite her implied persona as the dizzy 800 year old pigeon/emcee/cheerleader, Miku is a tough and savvy woman who deserves a LOT of credit for pushing her dream. And when you watch videos of Band maid's shows you will notice that Miku is the only one who never stops moving.

BAND-MAID’s later music becomes increasingly progressive and more challenging for the listener, e.g., tracks like SENSE, HATE?, and CORALLIUM. For me, they were hard to make sense of at first, but repeated listening has been very rewarding. Put another way, while pop songs that sound catchy at first can sometimes quickly become boring and tiresome, the aforementioned songs become more and more interesting as you dig into them. Not only is the musicianship is stellar, SAIKI’s vocal melodies and phrasing are fascinating. And KOBATO’s harmonies just take everything to another level. Likewise, the band’s live performances continue to become even more powerful, as captured in the video of the Yokohama Arena concert.

The Maids performing one of their (two) most performed songs: Freedom and Real Existence. But the Maids in this MV are pure perfection, aren't they? I mean, what can you fault? And those faces... their attitude... their music... their playing... their story... and their joy! Band-Maid is a world treasure, imo! Thanks Scott, for bringing the world's best hard rock band to your viewers!

Thanks for the reaction. These ladies exude pure joy and energy. If this song doesn't make you feel good, I'd have your pulse checked. Akane, aka Gorilla, is one of the happiest drummers on the planet. Oh, and as you've noticed, she's not too shabby behind the kit either. Check out Blooming (MV) since I'm not aware of an official live video. Moratorium (live at Zepp Tokyo) would be my other recommendation for something a bit heavier with a punk vibe. Cheers!

From what you've heard I agree with your comment but it's kind of hard to pin down Band-Maid's sound. They aren't afraid to explore some different directions. For a good idea of this wide range I'd check out Manners/Blackhole - it's a live video (but shot without a crowd due to Covid) of two different songs back to back. It's a great way to experience their range (and probably why the band released the two song together).

Totally agree with what you said about their sound in this particular song anyway. Freedom is a fantastic old fashioned upbeat rock song to me anyway. And I also agree that even when they go hard and/or crazy there is still an accessibility to their songs which to me is down to the always incredible vocal melodies and the way that they are sung by Saiki with a never to be underestimated contribution from Miku.

Akane is my favorite and I always rewind videos and both listen and watch what she does. Her fills are perfection and she a steel trap mind to keep everything on track as the band leader. The more I watch her the more I see that she has the style and creativity of some of the greatest drummers, especially Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich, and ranks well with any of rock's great drummers, male or female.

Glad you enjoyed the song, thank you for the reaction. This song is on the simpler side of their catalog. Usually people would say they are too complex and layered for the casual public. But yes melodies are an important part of their compositions. You'll need a lot more than 4 songs, more like 20 if you choose them well, to cover their range.

Totally agree. Manners is a no brainer. Grooviest thing I have heard. And it shall be this version. The MV is good, but this version is way above 10 in a scale from 1-10. Please remember that if you do not get Black Hole the first time, then you will eventually do that after relisten 100 times. Its complex. And good. But demanding by the listener.

This is one of their earlier songs that they didn't write themselves. They cover a lot of different rock styles, and sometimes use multiple styles within one song. You can pick any song and not be disappointed. Starting with Hate? live from Yokohama would be a good start.

Although Band-Maid didn't write this song, Miku wrote the lyrics for it. When Kanami sits down to watch Miku sing, it's because she forgot some of the lyrics in a previous performance. Now it has become a tradition to watch her, and the rest of the band joins in out of fun! Akane is a beast in this, but never loses the beat for the song during her solo, and smiles the whole time!

To me, this is almost Pop-Rock. Very approachable. The music isn't by Band-Maid. Before their album "Just Bring It" Band-Maid wrote very little of the music. I prefer their own songs, from that album onwards. My favourite BM is _Onset (Official Live Video)_ ① it's an instrumental. It blew me away when I first heard it, and still does. (everyone gets a chance to shine, bass is great, and 'tapping' live wins my heart 😍) Best Wishes. ☮ ① kzread.info/dash/bejne/n4qmsI-jj7jJYLg.html
