Welcome aboard, Roni. You are embarking on (along with many others - over 190 million YT views plus over 40 million reactor plays!) an awesome, progressive, hard-rock journey with 5 incredible women. Here's my intro blurb for those who may be new to Band-Maid: BAND-MAID’s songs and sound beat with the heart and soul of all rockers. But you’ll also hear heavy influences of Prog, Punk, Metal and Pop, with nice touches of Blues, Jazz, Funk and Grunge. Sometimes they use multiple genres within the same song. Their Composition, Execution, Joy of Playing, Consistency (125 songs), Uniqueness, Charisma, Charm and, oh yeah, Cuteness factor, position them as becoming the hard rock Beatles of our time! In other words, they’re destined for mega-stardom. Each member's personalities are super interesting and their musicianship among the best. Their writing, arrangements and overall sound, especially guitar tones and drums, are kick-ass! Having seen them LIVE, I can honestly say their performance, sound, stage appearance, and band synergy is off-the-rails spectacular! Band-Maid is the only band in decades where I love nearly EVERY song they’ve done. I have over 70 favorites! "Thrill" (2014) is a great place to start: kzread.info/dash/bejne/h5inmclsfZCanLQ.html Their songs from albums Unleash, Unseen World, Conqueror, World Domination, Just Bring It, Brand New Maid, and New Beginning drive even more - Shambles, Warning, No God, Different, Black Hole, Rinne, Blooming, Moratorium, Domination, Clang, Dice, Spirit, Don’t You Tell Me, Turn Me On, Fate, Play, Hide-And-Seek, Secret My Lips, Puzzle, Choose Me, I Can’t Live Without You, and on and on. But don’t miss out on their powerful, beautifully written, mid-tempo songs like Daydreaming, About Us, Memorable, Anemone, Endless Story, PAGE, At The Drop Of A Hat, Mirage and Smile... or more punky like After Life, Don’t Let Me Down and Screaming… or funky like Bubble… or bluesy like Manners and The Dragon Cries… or poppy like Start Over… or a bit jazzy like Wonderland… or progressive like No God, Giovanni, and Black Hole… or cultural like the Band-Maiko series… or instrumentals like From Now On, Don’t Be Long, Onset, Without Holding Back and Going Nuts… or their many acoustic versions like Catharsis and Sayonakidori... and last but not least, their Anime hits like Sense, Glory and Unleash (from their own Anime MV (series?)): kzread.info/dash/bejne/aYB2waeJg5eeeKg.html) And many songs are represented with 50 well produced music videos. kzread.info Most performances should be experienced from their LIVE audience & online OKYU-JI concerts:  ONLINE OKYU-JI (Feb. 11, 2021) “No God” kzread.info/dash/bejne/oHWYudCCgs2tkc4.html  Tokyo's LINE CUBE SHIBUYA (February 14, 2020) “Domination” kzread.info/dash/bejne/g5ats6WDnpnYico.html  ZEPP 2018 “Real Existence” kzread.info/dash/bejne/X6WF0K2CfLWbpZM.html  Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 and other full concerts are on bandmaidprime.tokyo, bili, and official Band-Maid’s DVD/BD/CD.  “P and D⁴” 30+ Photo Collage videos at www.youtube.com/@PinD2/videos And some of the better quality fan videos are excellent. Here’s two of what it’s like to see Band-Maid LIVE at an intimate venue:  Shot by Pat McKee from their 2023 US tour concert in Detroit: kzread.info/dash/bejne/dpust4-Ghs3akZM.html  See the Maids 2023 Rockville Festival’s short-set perfection performance: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qJ6OzbCen6rTmMY.html If you like Band-Maid, make sure to support them by purchasing some concert tickets, CD, DVD/BD & Merch, etc. bandmaid.tokyo Like most Band-Maid songs, I like them from the get-go but really start to appreciate them after more hearings and seeing their LIVE videos. I'll go back and see an older song like YOLO, Order, Shake That, Freezer, Before Yesterday, Real Existence, Non Fiction Days and Alone, etc. and realize there's no band that can consistently construct and play like Band-Maid. For fun, check out an awesome, little known "Mega Band-Maid Mix" by DJ Ray of some of their earlier stuff: facebook.com/djrayboston/videos/1004709499579009 Band-Maid Members: Saiki Atsumi (Sy-i-Key or Psyche) “StarQueen" - Lead vocals, arrangements and melodies. At 29 and the youngest, “Sensei” (Teacher) as band members call her, has the last word on many musical decisions. High-heels or sneakers, Sai-chan’s smile melts away her sometimes perceived, coldish persona. Saiki’s powerhouse performances, charisma, and voice focus the experience that’s driven her to the top echelon of hard rock frontwomen... or frontmen! Miku Kobato (Me-Ku) "Small Pigeon" - Rhythm guitar, vocals, lyricist, 32 years old. “Koba”, as Saiki calls her, is the Band founder and a firecracker MC & PR SpokesPigeon, po! Her “Magic Spell Time” charm and energy ignite the room. Kuruppo! No, no, no… KURUPPO!! Kanami Tono (Ka-Na-Me) “Princess” - Lead guitar, keyboards, 32 years old, is a prolific writer of most Band-Maid material. Kanami (translates “Song Wave”) is a possessed riff-slayer who’s so damn adorable it hurts. The only thing you want from Mincho is more! Akane Hirose (A-Ka-Nay) "Gorilla" - Drums, 33 years old, band energizer & co-clown with MISA. Achi’s talents include massive consumption of noodles and bananas, of course, (even during performance!) while revolutionizing rock drumming with relentless drive, dynamics and the kick. This “DrumZilla” is the Party! MISA (Me-Sa) "Barefoot Assassin" - Bass, 31 years old. An alluring free spirit driving her 5-string to rapturous low-ends while pulling off surprising counter leads with Kanami, off-stage MISA is the band’s goofball ballerina. Sometimes seen as the Mysterious One because she lets her instrument do the talking, the Assassin literally kills it… every note... uniting Band-Maid’s world-class rhythm section. A slug of JB, a slight grin, and let the slappin’ begin… MISA! MISA! MISA! Maidiacs (Maid-e-acts) - Band-Maid’s crazed yet supportive, knowledgeable and loyal Super Fans. [BAND-MAID NEWS]  BAND-MAID PRIME - Special Video Distribution Website. Along with nearly 50 great play-through’s by each member, concerts and skits, Band-Maid management / label(s) have included the Acoustic Christmas 2021, ZEPP 2018 and Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 concerts! Fans can now see more than 50 great live performances with awesome audio, etc. like Fate, I Can't Live Without You and the great MISA / Kanami exchange in Don't You Tell Me. Those concerts are two of the best produced & performed concerts ever recorded, IMO. bandmaidprime.tokyo  The Maids SOLD OUT 2023 US & Mexico tour wrapped up and was a fantastic success. And so many great live fancams to watch! Their playing and antics were as fresh and fun to experience from first show to last. BRAVO Band-Maid!!!!! In addition, their Japan tour finished up with 13 concerts, AND they’re writing and recording for their new album. Their 10th Anniversary Tour concluded at Japan’s 17,000 seat Yokohama Arena on Nov. 26, 2023 and in Hong Kong Dec. 21! The Maids are one of the hardest working super groups in the business! Their music, their sound, each of the Maids, and the love that permeates their live events is an experience not to be missed. Hope you can catch them LIVE!

Japanese Interviewer: Since all five girls are cute, each of them has a different character. Those who want to see idols perform can also enjoy (each character individually). MIKU: NO!! Not just for one of them, all of them together! Japanese Interviewer: Kuruppo, you are a pretty good tactician. Clever! You thought of it. You really formed the band you wanted, right? MIKU: It's a Miracle! SAIKI: That's right!

Great first reaction to my favorite band of the last 4 years or so. Stay with these ladies - they won't let you down. Hard to tell you everything I want to without writing a book, but if you keep checking them out, you'll experience face ripping guitar solos, gorgeous ballads, fantastic vocals, the best rhythm section on the planet for hard rock, and music that is at once interesting to trained musicians and attractive to folks that just want a catchy song. Their newer material can be much more complex (sometimes overwhelmingly so to newbies but phenomenal nonetheless), and above all they have the best songwriting duo since Lennon-McCartney. (I saw you laugh out loud there, but just you wait). The maid outfits you either like or don't - but they cease to matter after a couple of songs because they can flat out PLAY! They work very, very hard and just keep upping their game every year. They just rolled over their 10th anniversary. They also love their fans, and you'll find out the reverse is also true. They just make your whole life better. Most folks eventually come to like the outfits as they see how they are part of their story. There's a story behind the outfits - the founder of the band (rhythm guitars and back up vocals), used to work at a "maid cafe" - which are very popular in Japan, as is everything "cute" or "kawai." Doesn't matter - the band is unreal. Suggestion for next time - read the lyrics beforehand, and then don't try to follow them during the song, with a couple of exceptions. They have over 130 songs, and the killer is that they are all somewhere between good and OMG, with most coming in the latter category. One final thing - most of their songs are very uplifting, both in lyrics and in music, so it's really easy to get addicted to them to get yourself in a good mood to start the day.

Thanks Kevin! (wow, sorry it took me so long to reply!) The outfits didn't bother me as much as they were just a question mark. But after reading the comments on this video, I understand. 🤘🙏💜

  • @RevStickleback

The outfits were the idea of rhythm guitarist Miku, who used to work in a maid cafe, and liked the maid image. After her earlier idol group career faltered, she floated the idea of forming a band with a maid image, but rather than playing 'cute music' as would be expected from a group with that look (there are loads of idol groups dressed as maids) having them play rock music would be interesting. She found the other members, who were a little hesitant at first, but came to regard the outfits as their 'battle armour' especially now that they've changed over the years. Now Miku is the only one that is obviously meant to be a maid.

Welcome to Band-Maid! The best hard rock band I have heard in my 57 years on this planet. They don't stick to any one genre and often mix genres in songs. They are extremely diverse and have an extensive 10 year back catalogue featuring Punk, Pop-Punk, Hard-Rock, Classic Rock, Metal, Prog, Blues, Jazz, Groove, Rap etc. From face melting 220 bpm punk-prog to ballads, instrumentals to acoustics they do it all. They are also five of the nicest people in music, without a shred of ego. They are funny and fun and bad-ass musicians to boot. They are currently celebrating their 10th anniversary with the original line up. Btw, Miku the rhythm guitarist (red rose) formed the band. She had the idea of Band-Maid after working as a maid in Japanese maid cafe's. The idea is a concept called "The Gap" - that is what you see (cute maids) is NOT what you get (Hard Rock/Punk/Metal). They take the maid café concept literally. They call their concerts "servings" and their fans "Masters and Princesses". Oh, and Miku is an 810 year old small pigeon. Welcome to the pigeon hole Po!

You picked one of the best places to begin your Band Maid journey. Please try not to let the lyrics distract you from enjoying yourself. Allow Saiki’s voice to simply be another instrument. As an old blues rock musician, I also hear the classic rock and blues influences here. (Along with some GnR and hair metal) Band Maid is a musician’s band. They write complex music and keep it fun and accessible, most of the time. Please listen to “DICE” several more times and pay attention to the arrangement. One key element of the Maids is they never cut and paste verses. The second verse will always have different, subtle changes. Where you go next depends on what you like. These women are musical shapeshifters. Pop/Hard rock? “Play,” official live Metal instrumental? “From Now On,” OMV Post hardcore? “Blooming,” OMV Uptempo alt-rock ballad? “Daydreaming,” OMV If AC/DC and Queen did a movie soundtrack? “Puzzle,” live Tokyo Garden 2023 Enjoy the ride 🚀

They use some really heavy elements in some of their songs but they also use elements of jazz and funk just to mention a few. They are one of the most diverse bands in style that I have ever heard in 50 years of being a rock fan and they do it all really well. Great intro reaction to Band-Maid. Just to play devil's advocate, regarding the lyrics, the song says, "May I take your order?" Doesn't that make more sense coming from a band dressed as maid cafe waitresses? Listening to audio only, you're right. They don't need costumes. But, you didn't hear "Dice", you watched it. And, I would argue that Band-Maid is a visual act designed, not for audio listeners, but for theater in front of live audiences.

Best band this short century. I see this with reactors trying to chase the lyrics, the music and the visuals; I would suggest not worrying about the lyrics, just let the music carry you. Heck, you can find the lyrics and read them beforehand if you wanted. The music itself always tells you exactly how to feel. This is great, but I highly suggest seeing their LIVE videos as that is where they truly shine. A fun suggestion would be Domination LIVE (not the MV), or Freedom Live, or you can lookup "Band-Maid Moratorium live Zepp Tokyo" uploaded by Instrumental Maid (it's safe to react to).

Maid outfits, well, before starting the band, Miku Kobato, was working as a waitress in a famous Tokyo maid cafe where all members of the staff were dressed like maids))) they definitely don't need it but it is their signiture look. Miku was the original singer, couldn't even play a note on the fret until she met Kanami that taught he how to play))) So don't sell yourself short - if Miku can learn to play in no time, at that level, you can too. The band is simply adorable, but above all else is...Misa, Misa, Misa - the barefoot assassin))) She enchants you like a ballerina and kills you with surgical accuracy when she pulls those strings...

From Japan Thank you for your reaction to BAND-MAID. BAND-MAID DICE This song, which many people find creepy due to the blindfolded girl and the doll, is an ode to women's independence. At the end of the song, a girl holding a doll stands up, takes off her blindfold, and walks out into the light. The music video is also getting brighter and brighter. They can't guarantee what the outside world is waiting for them, but the dice have been cast, and they are calling out to the outside world to not sit still. In my opinion, they are the best rhythm and melody makers of our time, mixing all genres together.

(Paraphrase) "They don't need the outfits" - True, but the outfits are literally part of the DNA of the band (as I'm sure others will fill you in). At this point they consider the maid outfits their "battle armor," and it helps them change mindsets from everyday person to rock stars when they do a performance. They are infectiously real. They are fantastic musicians because they worked their asses off to become that. They laugh and have a great time on stage, over and above the skits they do during breaks. They write complex simplicity, if you will, finding a way to be borderline progressive in the verses, while still writing catchy, ear candy choruses. Subsequent verses are the best, because we know the vocal melodies will stay the same while the music under it changes drastically. They do everything they can to pack every single song with genuine, high quality musicianship. I hope you liked them, because they have brought a lot of joy to my life and more people should get to feel that. Good luck with your channel!

When Justin Hawkins (The guy from the Darkness) reacted to the same song, he did found GnR (You could be mine) and AC/DC (Big Gun). Not sure if it was intentionally, but they have a tendency of putting together a lot of riffs and rythms, cook it up with their own spice. Not all like their gimmick... But the japanese music market is quite hard to get into, so to have some sort of image always helps. Especiually when it comes to grab attention. Their look has matured through the years. The only ones who has had a true maid look has been the guitarists and the drummers. A month ago they had a special concert, at the biggest stadium in Yokohama, to celebrate the ending of their 10th anniversary tour. There their unveiled their new costumes. Miku who is the founder and also was the one behind the image, is the only one who is still "maid", while the drummer and lead guitarist have costumes more inspired. Love Kanami Tonòs new look.

A teeny, tiny sliver of excellence from (easily?) the best rock band on planet earth today 🌏. Don’t believe me? Listen to another song - any song, then another, then another. Once you realize you’ve listened to dozens and dozens of tremendous rock songs as good or better than Dice, and seen them in live performances, you’ll realize there is absolutely no better rock band on the planet and maybe no rock as prolific in writing great rock music since…U2? Rush? Zeppelin? The Who? The Beatles? 🤔 Ever? You’ll see. All us Masters & Princesses were once just like you. We found out, too. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Next? - “Influencer” - MV - “Daydreaming” - MV - “Why, Why, Why” - online live - “Domination” - official live - “Play” - official live - “Unleash!!!!!” - “Freedom” - official live I could do this for days…list nearly all 120+ songs. 😎 Take care and rock on! 🤘🏼🔥🌟🎸🎸🎸🥁🎤🎤🎼👏🏼😎✌🏼

The maid uniforms of Band-Maid are the make-up of Kiss, the prison suits of Slipknot, the hobo look of grunge, the corpse paint of black-metal. Do anyone of them need it? If you ask people, you will hear a variety of responses. Some ignore it, some are drawn to it, others ridicule it. Whatever it is, people definitely talk about it. Getting talked about is in the grand scheme of things important if you want to reach a wide audience. After that fact, the music will do the rest of the talking. I am in it for the music, but I definitely recognize the effect of standing out.

Celebrating four years as a Madiac. Still the best band out there. The maid theme is just that, it was intended to draw attention so they could slay you with their sound. As far as it actually meaning much now is debatable. All of their outfits have changed several times over the years. As far as what's next IMO you should listen to some of the new stuff such as SHAMBLES, or FROM NOW ON, an instrumental that is incredible. Just have fun with the journey.

Nice reaction, your enjoyment was written all over your face. They have a huge catalogue of songs, possinly nearing 150 give or take 20, and I have not herad a bad song yet. Obviously different fans will have different favourites but they are all good. Their MVs and Lives are all good but my particular preference is in most cases for them live with a few exceptions. A good introduction to their live is one listed by @TomClark-Futoura down in the comments below, namely Tokyo's LINE CUBE SHIBUYA (February 14, 2020) “Domination” kzread.info/dash/bejne/g5ats6WDnpnYico.html I suspect this was responsible for hooking a lot of fans originally. Their recent 10th year Anniversary concert at the 17,000 Yokohama arena lasted for over 3.5 hours and had everything from Hard Rock, Acoustic, Piano and Vocals. Miku rhythm gtr /backing vox/ lyricist formed the band after working in a Maid style cafe.. ie wear cute maid dresses but play hard rockin music as a contrast, this difference is know as The Gap. As you have seen Lovebites . Anyways , welcome the Maidiacs. please check out, Domination ,official live version 2020. the only way to see these girls in front an audience. btw they just nailed last Chicago Lollapalooza festival. whole thing is on you tube. Thes girls , 10years together now and touring the world.

Okay, names, pronunciation, nicknames, and roles, in order that they joined the band. Miku Kobato - mee-koo - Kuruppo, the Little Pigeon, the Little Engine Who Will - band founder, backing (and occasionally lead) vocals, rhythm guitar, principal lyricist, tireless Spokespigeon and PR machine. Wielder of weapons grade cuteness. So determined to see her band succeed that she fired herself as lead singer (she decided her voice wasn't strong enough for hard rock), then went looking for a replacement. Learned to play guitar after the band was formed. Kanami Tono - kah-nah-mee - Kanamincho or just Mincho - lead guitar, keyboards, principal composer and arranger. On stage, she's a savant mad riffer with a room temperature IQ and a huge crush on Saiki. In reality, she's a genius, and not just musically- she has a degree in economics with honors from Tokyo University. Akane Hirose - ah-kah-neh - A-chan, the Gorilla - drums, sequencing, snacks, the leader the band doesn't have. What you see is what you get- a cheerful jock with a huge appetite who burns off the calories murdering her drums. Frequently snacks between songs. MISA - mee-sah - the Barefoot Assassin, MISA MISA MISA! - bass, booze, occasional wet work. Usually stone faced. Barely acknowledges the audience's existence. Always has a beer or a bottle of Jim Beam on her Orange amp. Originally, these were ways of coping with stage fright. These days, that's just how the assassin rolls. Saiki Atsumi - sah-ee-kee (but Psyche is close enough) - the Ice Queen, Sensei, Sai-chan - lead vocals, some lyrics, the "We're done" girl. Fashionista and train nerd. In total command on stage; hides behind Miku off stage (she's actually kind of shy).

@@ronireacts_to_all Not a problem. Life happens as it happens. Here is the rest of that file for you. Band Maid was started in 2013 by Miku Kobato. At the time she had just left the Idol Group, Lil Cumin and she didn't like the type of music she had been performing. She approached her management agency with the idea of making an actual band playing rock music but dressed as maids. She had worked in a Maid Cafe and thought the image of maids playing rockin music would create what she called "The Gap" between what you see and what you hear. The Management company was like Ok, go ahead. Miku then looked around and found Kanami a singer/songwriter who was posting her own videos on the internet. Miku had her agency contact her and Kanami thought the idea was cool and agreed to join. Miku then asked if Kanami knew a drummer who might be interested. Kanami had worked with Akane in the past and there is 2 versions of this, the first is, Kanami literally walked over to Akane's apartment and asked her, the second is Kanami called Akane and asked her. (Akane has said in 2 different interviews that 1: Kanami called her and asked if she could come over and 2: in a second interview Kanami just came over) Akane was actually hesitant as she had worked in an "All Girl Group" before and didn't enjoy it as it wasn't the type of music she wanted to play. After hearing a Demo, Akane was like ok, but was still slightly hesitant because of the "Maid Outfits", but she agreed to give it a try. Akane was asked if she knew a bass player and she had gone to Tokyo School of Music with MISA and had worked a couple of jobs with her. So Misa was contacted and after she heard a demo she was like I like the music, but she also was hesitant about the "Maid Outfits", but she relented and joined in as she really wanted to play the kind of music she heard in the demo. The 3 of them then "Auditioned" for the record company and passed the audition. Now we have the "Core" members. The 4 members worked out some songs provided for them by the record company, and a setlist and they had performed 3 times with just Miku on main vocals. Miku after those performances felt that her voice wasn't powerful enough to really perform the songs she wanted. So she approached her management company again and asked if they had any singers who weren't in other projects. They then auditioned several singers. Miku heard Saiki rehearsing in a room across the hall and asked if she could be auditioned, the record company then had Saiki audition. Saiki was signed to the same management company and had done some work as a backup singer and dancer and was asked if she would be interested in auditioning for this new group which currently had 4 members and she would be the fifth. She had been a member of a group with 8 other people as a backup singer and dancer, and HATED it. So she listened to the demo and thought "Cool" because she liked the music. Now we come to the tricky part. Miku KNEW that if Saiki was told about the "Maid Outfits" she would say NO WAY!, so they didn't tell her. They told her they would have "Cool/cute Clothes"(I've read it translated either way), and she never met Miku until a few days before they had a contracted performance. She wasn't told about the "Maid Outfits" until the day before the performance, and she had considered backing out, but she had signed the contract. (Saiki also had NEVER met Miku until then as well) So the Ladies, went and did the performance and Saiki really, REALLY liked the crowds reaction and the music they were performing. She DIDN'T like the apron she wore so it got ditched after the first performance. And you now have the beginnings of the BEST LIVE HARD ROCK BAND in the WORLD! ALL HAIL BAND MAID!!!!! Now that we have the Full band, it was felt that there needed to be a second guitar. Saiki was like, "Not Me, No Way." So Miku said, "I'll do it.", at first that was literally all she did, was hold the guitar and mime playing it, until Akane said, if you are going to hold it, you NEED to learn to play it. And Miku said, "Ok.", and Kanami started to teach Miku how to play. The Ladies released their first album in 2014 "Maid in Japan" which failed to chart, but later after "Thrill" it was reissued and charted to #26 in Japan. Then in 2015 they released "New Beginning" On New Beginning was the song that changed Band Maid's entire existence. "Thrill"... The band was getting ready to release their first music video and the choice was between "Love, Passion, Matador" and "Thrill" and the ladies chose Thrill. (Little known fact, Miku helped with the lyrics on Thrill but did not get credited) This became the seminal moment of Band Maid. Because their second album charted at #64, the record company was seriously considering disbanding the Ladies and switching them to other projects. (In fact they had Kanami and Akane work with Mochi to Cheese thinking that when Band Maid cratered they could use them in another band. MISA had also just started working with Mochi to Cheese as well). However about 6 months after the video's release, a Facebook page "JRock Radio" posted the video to their timeline. And the video went viral. Having over a million views in just a few short weeks. The Ladies Twitter page got so many hits they thought their page had been hacked. Their KZread channel also started getting more and more subscribers and views to Thrill. Now the ladies knew where their fans wanted them to go. Harder Rock, less pop. And history was Maid. If you have any questions, I and many others would be more than happy to answer them for you.

Regarding the maid dresses; at first I agreed with you, but I don't anymore. Hear me out. It's a gimmick, like Angus' short pants or Slipknot's masks, but it's a little more. Their persona changes the relationship with their audience. They are not performers you have the privilege of listening to; they are servants in your home, singing you a song because they love you. They literally introduce themselves: "Welcome home, masters and princesses. We are Band-Maid!" Watch more and you'll see what I mean. Try the music video *"from now on"* and I promise lyrics won't be a problem. ✌

Really love the prominence of the strong Bass guitar. Usually in the background in a more supporting role, always nice to see a little more spotlight on it. Oddly enough, I've known a few women bass players over the years. That said...I've went back to the lyrics...I can't make heads or tails of what they're singing about...procrastination? Choosing your own way? No clue. Too much poetry for me to decipher I guess. Agree, the costume adds nothing. Guessing it's more an Asian cultural thing. Seems like there's a lot of Anime, dress up fantasy things in the culture. I mean, anytime I've been in an Asian market, seems like half the food has a picture of Hello Kitty on it. Given my inability to decipher a strong coherent message in their lyrics, I've got no topic relevant quote for you so I'll leave you a more generic one from a musical great... "Life is what happens when you're busy making other plans." - John Lennon

And a thing about the maid outfits, Roni & dyoung: as Fans and Maidiacs know, Miku -- the 2nd guitarist, lyricist, founder and who worked at a maid cafe -- wanted to show that everyday working "Kawaii" girls dressed as maids in high heels while having fun and smiling could rock as hard as any guy band sweating it up in their hip, poor tortured artists "outfits"... and by showing that contrast (the Gap), it would generate interest, which it so successfully has done! It also represents Woman Power (Equality), which is an important theme with the Maids. Now they show up as Maids for all band business and interviews, etc. and have created a long-lasting, unmistakable, visual band brand. Very cleaver, Miku. Your diabolical plan for world domination is working, Po! Of course, none of this would work if their music and stage performance wasn't at such a remarkably high level. Band-Maid is considered by many of their fans and Maidiacs to be the best hard rock band in the world - maid outfits and all! As for the lyrics... here's my take on DICE's lyrics: I know the "dice" have already been thrown (as in her lyrics), but I choose to look at it as stop being indecisive, sitting in a dark room playing with dolls (TV, phone, toys, games, etc.). "Seize the moment", roll the dice, open your eyes, and walk into the light! Miku's lyrics, especially after translation, can be a bit cryptic - open for interpretation, as are all poems and lyrics. But their music is always right on point which melds the two into wonderful songs of possibilities!

There are too many top musicians in Japan. Some of them need to use some gimmicks to attract more eyeballs or to let the audiences to recognize them. They also did the Band Maiko to entertain the fans. The gimmick things is not uncommon in Japan, just like the visual kei. I think there is other advantage. When they are not in their maid outfit, they are not easily recognized by the public. There are also some other bands with gimmick, such as Ningen Isu, Kishidan, Man with a Mission and they are top musicians too.

Reactors get caught up on the maid outfits but they never think twice about how Lovebites dresses. Dressing like Greek goddesses is perfectly fine, but maid outfits are out of the question?

Hey Ryan! I actually did comment on Lovebites outfits. I liked the change up from the usual all black, to something different. The maid outfits aren't "out of a the question" at all! I just felt like I didn't need the gimmick of it. I'm used to seeing gimmick as a need to over compensate for lack of talent or technicality. And in this case - it was just not needed - because they are good musicians. BUT - as someone mentioned here on the comment section, they needed to stand out 10 years ago when they started, also, that one of them was a waitress that wore something similar to that, so - I'm down with it.

@@ronireacts_to_allI'm late on this but I had exactly the same view as you on the outfits when I first discovered Band-Maid. Only for me it was really putting me off listening to them. I'm far from unusual in this among their fans. I guess the outfits still don't add anything for me, but nor do they subtract anything. The music is so consistently amazing that how they dress seems irrelevant (except that introducing them to other people can be embarrassing). But the outfits do seem to be important to some of the band-members for different reasons, from being a kind of feminist statement all the way to just liking wearing them, so I've lost my hangups about that.

In Japan there is a culture of young people who have completely shut themselves off from society. They stay indoors, play with dolls, and don't want to let the outside in . Band Maid is saying, take off your blindfolds, come out into the light and LIVE ! Give it a shot ! Roll the DICE !

They never really _needed_ the maid outfits, but it helped them gain traction in the early days. I think they are now stuck with it. The outfits have changed over the years and have become more classic in style, moving away from the earlier maid-café/cosplay associated style maid outfits. When listening to new bands it really makes sense to just park the possibly distracting aesthetics to one side, and focus on the musicianship. Likewise, I wouldn't try and follow the lyrics on a first listen, but focus on the song structure and instrumental arrangement and phrasing.

Agreed 👍🏼 Good comment. Funny, I never hear any reactors comment about outfits for Slipknot, Ghost, Sleep Token, or Tool. Legacy acts from Devo to Kiss; recents like Daft Punk, etc. I always laugh when someone seems to take issue with a maid dress 😂

@@MusicMike747 Many people find it hard to focus on the music, and immediately get hung up on the lyrics and aesthetics. To help myself not fall into that trap I often either close my eyes or minimise the video of a new band I am checking out for the first time. First and foremost I concentrate on the music.

Nice. So, for me, and for you it seems, they don't need the outfits. But they had to break out of crowded scene with something that grabbed attention. I'm sure most of the response to their first viral hit was due to the maid outfits. People couldn't believe the cute dressed up girls could play like that. That was 7 or 8 years ago when they were in their early 20s so their youth played into the image. I remember forwarding it to friends with lines like "there's everything in this world" or "can you believe this?" Now, when they've been together for 10 years, it's an endearing quirk for fans worldwide. And as they've gotten older and their skirt hems have dropped, the outfits have become legitimate hard rock armor, at least for me. By the way, they're more punk than metal. Punk inspired hard rock with pop vocals and a lot of other genres fused in.

I'd call them straight rock rather than punk, but yes, they aren't a metal band. In truth, many people in the west seem to be surprised women can play that well, regardless of what they are wearing. Part of that might be that because they don't understand the lyrics, they focus more on the instrumentation, but sadly many still have a "wow, they can play as well as men" attitude, as if that should be surprising.

@@RevStickleback Yes, the stereotypes exist, even deep in the backs of the minds of us who have fought for women's equality for decades (more decades than I choose to admit). The latent stereotypes express as joy in reaction to counter-stereotypic behavior. Accentuated, in this case, by the girly cloths. Just what Miku had in mind. Add that to the many other sources of joy in Band Maid's music... and the members personalities.... pure fun.

@@thisismadness6962 It can be worse in other genres. I also love a small Korean female punk band called Rumkicks, and they often face a barrage of abuse from (almost always) American punks who seem to object wholeheartedly to a band who don't have the same sound, look, and gender, as the hardcore bands they are used to. At least Band-Maid don't get that sort of criticism. Some don't even realise their patronising attitudes though, complaining about how bad it is that 'their management makes them dress as maids' because obviously no women could have thought up the idea all by themselves.

Hi from France: Hum! Young man (Yes, I say that, I am quite old myself [joke]...) Hard rock was born at the end of the 60s, say around 1968-69 and punk had its first traces around 1973-74... So I'm not so sure that punk influenced hard rock. And punk music, if we ignore the political context of the time in England, was born precisely in opposition to hard-rock music and its logorrhea of guitar solos and increasingly complex compositions. The beginnings of punk were inherently direct and made of pure energy, punchy without embellishments... Enjoy Maidiacs! (I hope Google trad didn't betray my thoughts...)

@@gillesmurat7362 I'd say punk was more against prog-rock than hard rock. There was dislike for Pink Floyd, not The Who.
