I am 60. I cut hard rock teeth on Van Halen and AC/DC. This is the best, most musically diverse band that I've heard in decades. Whether it's the jazz influence of Start Over, the heavy prog of Matchless GUM or the stadium rock vibe of Fate. BAND-MAID ROCKS!

(Mix of Japanese traditional instruments and rock) The Warning (all female rock band from Mexico) Otyken (Siberian tribal dance music) Babymetal 'Megitsune' (Japanese Idol and Metal fusion) Stereopony 'Hitohira no Hanabira' (pop rock but I really like this song) Yoasobi 'Racing into the Night' (hilarious song because it sounds so happy but it's age restricted on KZread because the lyrics are dark) If you're open to Metal there are a ton of all female Japanese metal bands. Nemophila, Hanabie, Lovebites, Maximum the Hormone etc etc. If you're open to synthetic music then I really like Vocaloid. There are several cool things about Vocaloid. It's so cheap to make there are hundreds of thousands of songs made by thousands of different composers. It allows people to arrange vocals like sheet music and also to make endless revisions. So in my opinion the songwriting of the better Vocaloid songs is really really good. There are so many songs of every imaginable genre. Maybe I'd recommend 'Aishite' by Kikuo and 'Rolling Girl' by Wowaka. Then there is always 'Levan Polka' it's a Vocaloid Polka lol. It's a pretty famous song. Or 'PoPiPo' is a really cute song. It's funny. I think it was originally a commercial for vegetable juice? My Vocaloid playlist is 16 hours long. I really personally like 'MKDR' by Deco27.

Kanami (lead guitar/composer)) can play piano. MISA (bass) can play guitar and piano. Akane (drum) can play piano and trombone, and she can do DJ😁 Saiki (lead vocal) is learning guitar and piano. She performed a piano solo while singing "Choose Me" at their 10th anniversary tour final Yokohama Arena (Nov. 2023). Miku (rhythm guitar/second vocal/lyricist/band founder/spokesperson) learned how to play guitar only after the band was formed. She can speak pigeon language, PO!🕊💕🤣🤣🤣

They are the best around right now......and into the future. I've seen them three times live and they sound exactly like what you hear in a video, whether it's and MV or a live video. And I like that you hit on the lyrics. Miku, the rhythm, band's founder and main lyricist, writes some of the coolest lyrics that are just so perfect. Unlike the crap that passes for lyrics here. They always tell a great story. Kanami, the lead guitarist and Mozart-like savant composer, pretty much writes music every day. To give you an example, when they were here on their 2022 US Tour, they made the rounds by tour bus from coast to coast and during their sojourn Kanami decided to write a song about their fans, called "Memorable", which really shows how they love their fans. They even stopped somewhere in California to shoot a music video on a country road for the song. There is no one like them out there. I'm into my 77th year and have been reinvigorated by Japanese music scene in general and Band Maid in particular. They and other bands are keeping then flame of true rock, in all it's iterations, burning brightly. Enjoy the ride.

Like their music over the years the maid outfits have evolved over time to suit the personality of each one of them.

How about a two-fer with "Manners/ Black Hole", the official live video. It shows their versatility with those two songs back-to-back. Manners has a great funk groove and "Black Hole" has a VERY fast paced frenetic post apocalyptic punk sound.

THE MAIDS ! cleaning house as usual. they often mix a few english lyrics into their songs. all japanese wouldn't bother me in the least but it keeps others a bit more interested. killer band.

Here's my take on DICE's lyrics: I know the "dice" have already been thrown (as in her lyrics), but I choose to look at it as stop being indecisive, sitting in a dark room playing with dolls (TV, phone, toys, games, etc.). "Seize the moment", roll the dice, open your eyes, and walk into the light! Miku's lyrics, especially after translation, can be a bit cryptic - open for interpretation, as are all poems and lyrics. But their music is always right on point which melds the two into wonderful songs of possibilities! Thx, Butterfly and Bobby!

Really fun reaction! You said you are big into lyrics but unfortunately I've found that very few translations do justice to the song. This is a long post, but I hope it expresses why the subtitles rarely do justice to the song. Translating between Japanese and English is incredibly difficult, much more so than for example, French or Spanish or German; and despite being a fan for over 3 years now I've rarely come across translations that work. Of the songs you've done, I think Blooming has a very good translation, Dice is okay, and Domination not very good. If you search "why Miku is a great lyricist" you'll find a post by a Japanese fan (in English) breaking down what he thinks sets her apart. One thing to notice is how their songs have a vocal rhythm that is very similar to English. This is very hard to do while having the song still make sense in Japanese. Other things that make translating a Band-Maid song difficult are her *bi-lingual wordplay*, use of metaphor based on Japanese *cultural understanding*, and esoteric *subject matter*. An example of each: 1. bi-lingual wordplay: In one song about vapid online clout-chasers, the lyrics are the English "chit chat" but they sing it "chi cha", which means narrow-minded in Japanese. One phrase, but two ideas. This particular one could be represented in subtitles (narrow-minded chit chat) but other examples could not. For the record, the subtitles in this song just say "chit chat" so even in this case, when the meaning could have been expressed, it hasn't been. 2. cultural understanding: One song is influenced by a classic Japanese childrens novel from the 1920s. Without the knowledge of that story, even an accurate translation won't fully express what it means. It's like if the song "Tom Sawyer" is translated to Japanese, a Japanese person can understand it is a name, but if they don't know who Tom Sawyer is and what he stands for, he might as well be John Smith. But you can see how much would be lost. 3. subject matter: From Turkish guided missile systems to old Russian curses, one needs a lot of esoteric knowledge to get what she's going for. Basically my message is this: please don't judge the lyrics based solely on subtitles. Looking forward to your next reaction!

Greatings to Maidiac Princess. " Dice" is a fan favorite to listen to. One of my favorite things about the group is that Misa's bass is integral to their sound. We love when she adds her awesome rifts to each song. I can't wait for you to see them live in concert. Hopefully, they will tour again this year. They are so much fun live. I'm 75 years old, but when I listen to or see them live, I feel like a teenager again. When you view the biographies of each member by Ohreje, you will be amazed how seredipidous the formation of Band Maid was. What agroup!!!!!

Freedom for the drum solo

First! 🎲 The Band Maid story is worthy of a full feature film. Impossibly fortunate to have found each other. “DICE” reminds me of hair metal, but more progressive. With lyrics, there’s plenty to study after you’ve enjoyed their music. Miku 🌹 is poetic and philosophical, clever and cheeky at times. This song has a perfect example with the line “candy or the whip, which do you like?” She knew westerners would raise eyebrows with the suggestion; however, in Japan, this phrase is their version of “the carrot and stick” referencing motivation. And that fits the theme of this song. From here, I would really like to hear your thoughts on one of their instrumental tracks. No lyrics to worry about. And another facet of this tremendously talented band. “From Now On,” official music video. My only advice would be to have really good headphones and turn it up!

I just want to mention that Miku is a wonderful lyricist. I think maybe by now you have noticed the English mixed with Japanese. I think that they mentioned once that the English tends to flow with the music better in certain places. But when I read her lyrics, they are so meaningful and positive. They are my #1 band for sure. The dynamic here is opposite - usually its some guy who's found this really great band and his girlfriend says, "Cute Japanese girls dressed up as anime maids? RE-ally?" Here its the woman saying "These girls will kick your butt and you'll LIKE it!" And I'm with you; I watch and listen to Kanami; first I need the PRS, then it's the MESA triple rectifier. Then, visiting the salon to get the manicure. And finally, well okay, it's a pinafore if that's what it takes. I just want to sound like that! Please do watch Ohrenje's series of documentaries. You might find Kanami's really the one who can probably play anything within two weeks if you leave her alone. But she started piano as a three-year-old and has lived and breathed music her whole life. I feel like Akane and MISA are probably passable at a few other instruments but wouldn't want to play seriously in front of anyone. Miku has learned guitar in the last 10 years, and Saiki just recently played piano in front of an audience for the first time. Both of them are singers first. I hope you don't feel like anyone's picking nits - mostly it's just fans who've found this really outstanding band and they want everyone to know about it. By the way, find out when your friend is going to Japan and then check their website at bandmaid.tokyo for their schedule. If they are playing anywhere, they should be sure to at least _try_ to get tickets and see them. It might be confusing if they don't speak Japanese because they will banter with the audience in Japanese, but Miku is a born entertainer and she's a riot in any language ... AND the band will kick your butt and you'll LIKE it!

The song's basically about taking risks, seizing opportunities, putting in the work to get the rewards. Roll the dice. Take your shot. The doll is just a doll. It's harmless - in fact, that's kind of the point. The doll is a simulated person, it's safe. The girl is blindfolded, in the dark, holding the doll for comfort. She's sheltered. At the end of the video the girl abandons the doll, lifts up the blindfold, steps into a blinding light that represents the uncertainty and opportunity that she's been hiding from. This song is a call to arms. In Japan they have a sub-culture of shut-ins, people who are either unemployed or under employed who basically won't move out on their own. They stay in their parent/grandparent's home basically playing with dolls or video games, instead of getting out and living life and trying to better themselves. This song is calling them out. Challenging them, "Are you gonna stay in there playing with DOLLLLLLLLLS like a little kid? Or are you going to stand up take off the blindfold, leave the dolls and games behind and step out into the real world?" At the end of the video, the girl puts down the doll, takes off the blindfold and steps into the light. It's called Hikikomori in Japan and is defined as: "pulling inward, being confined", also known as severe social withdrawal, is total withdrawal from society and seeking extreme degrees of social isolation and confinement. Hikikomori refers to both the phenomenon in general and the recluses themselves. The concept is primarily recognized only in Japan, although similar concepts exist in other languages and cultures. Hikikomori have been described as loners or "modern-day hermits". Estimates suggest that half a million Japanese youths have become social recluses, as well as more than half a million middle-aged individuals. - Definition from Wikipedia

Well, not any instrument. Akane tried just about everything before deciding on drums, including trombone, but even that didn't last. Most play piano to varying degrees. Miku didn't play guitar until it was a case of either learning or hiring a sixth band member. However Akane and MISA both attended the Tokyo School Of Music. That's where they met. They also did some projects together before BAND-MAID formed. So they are very probably the best Rhythm Section in the business.

I actually recommend the gold rush interview over the documentaries first. A. It’s shorter, and b. The ladies do a lot of the talking and you experience their personalities instead of learning about their personalities. I think watching that first makes the documentary better. You don't have to go to Japan. They tour the US every year. They're great. If you like girl bands and outfits you HAVE to see Babymetal and Hanabie. Babymetal's classic 2013 outfits are legendary. Might as well start with 'Gimme Chocolate' it's their most popular video and has the outfits
