Bad Rainy Night in Cheapest Tent I Could Buy

Ойын-сауық

I bought the cheapest tent I could and spent the night camping in the woods. It was raining during the night which meant the cheap tent got soaked!

No, tent proves itself. Ground sheet hides the flaws. Like tent poles used in weight claims. Change how you measure, easy to fraud the public. This is why "fact" is an "act".

It seems like the kind of little tent that you put on your kid's bed. My son loved his bed tent so much that I had to get one for his little brother. It was just fun and gave them a secure feeling back in the day. No need to worry about rain or condenstation, but it did a great job of keeping the "boggieman" at bay. 😊

Ive got the same box stove, 11quid from ebay. Used it a dozen or so times, grille warped but the rest is fine. If you luft the 2 handles, you can drop the wire grille over them which holds the handles vertically and you can rest a pan/pot on them with around a 20mm gap from top of firebox to bottom of pan. Helps with airflow.

looks wonderful indeed, I wish someone built the same from titanium (melting point at ~1600°C isn't terribly much more than steel, but still some. I have a couple of the cheap titanium stoves similar to this one (albeit not as well designed) and they have yet to warp)

I love twig stoves. I bought a wood gasification model for little over £12, from ebay. It's a beauty. It doesn't fold flat, but packs up like a Russian Doll, one piece inside the other. The packed size is a little more than that of an enamel mug.

I'm pretty sure I have that same tent! I *always* use a ground cloth, and this tent needed a light-weight tarp cover. Found it better than nothing, and it currently resides in the back of the car for emergencies. Bought a *slightly* larger tent which is used for short weekend camping, cost roughly double and have been *super* pleased with it.

Only tangentially related but I once bought a "raincoat" from Primark and walked for 50 minutes during a heavy downpour and I was absolutely sodden by the end. Water leaked in through the nylon but also through the seams and my entire top body was soaking wet. I wouldn't have looked worse than if I didn't wear a coat at all. For the sake of a few more quid I would have been better off buying something with taped seams and better material which is the lesson I learned that day and have abided by ever since.

👍👍👍 .. a good share .. thanks. Tent and Stove both good buys (before the howling starts 😏) .. The Stove did what it was supposed to do. 4-6 compressed Charcoal Briquettes make for a handy addition to any wood stove setup. I take a pack of 12 with me when I'm planning to use a wood burner, for convenience and 'just in case'. The Tent .. ideal as a 'starter' with which to 'test the water' when considering taking on outdoor camping and such and before committing big time. Together with a good quality Tarp (the tarp will be kept), the tent should serve as a good wind / rain spray shield and with the door unzipped, condensation will be less of a problem. Then .. that tent will be ideal for the kids and dog/s / cats whatever, for weekend good weather backyard camping. One way of getting them interested in the Outdoors and keeping them off their electronic media devices and .. out of one's hair .. 😉😏. My kids and pooches (a female pittie and little male jack russel), especially my daughter, absolutely loved backyard camping overnighters 😊. Once again, thanks for sharing .. nice and simple 👍. Take care ..

Good Nz morning Mike. Back in the day, late 50s/early 60's our cheap pup tents were made of a calico. Coldest, most uncomfortable night i had down here, was August, middle of our winter. We had a 10°F ground temp, so nowadays we'd say neg 12°C. Scraping frost off the inside of the tent was the highlight. By the way altitude was 2000ft. Venting in those tents was a case of the flaps not being tied together, tightly. Someone came up with an idea of taking a heap of pencils and pencil sharpener, for tinder. Seemed to work ok. I was taught what wood to use, basically totara, rimu hardwood. You had to know how to start a fire in the wet, otherwise you never survived. Boys became men, at a young age. Like your fire box mate, very handy. Thanks for the upload and share. Take care and atb from down under.

I have the same folding twig stove. I've had and used it for 2 years now it has warped but I try and bend it back into shape when I fold it up. Quick tip if you put the grill on with the handles front to back you can poke the stoves handles up through the grill handles, and that does stop it warping as bad.

I own a similar if not identical tent, just a different color scheme and bag. I needed a small tent for western fire details and started with this cheap one. Somehow it has survived 2 fire crew trips, with my last one requiring the tent to be set up and taken down daily (great for morale) and being tied onto my fire bag going through 3 airports each way. Small, dinky, and minimalist but just enough for me to get my change of clothes and gear in with me every night. Cool to see you talk about and use it!

The first tent I bought was at Kmart. A pup tent. After a few uses, the nylon fabric was stretched so much it was unusable, even though there were loops on the sides to help pull them out. I cut the floor out and many, many years later I still use the floor as a tarp to drag piles of leaves on every fall. Even though it didn't last long as a tent, I still think I got my money's worth.

This is what you buy a kid going on his first camping trip with his buddies. Personally, I would put the ground sheet INSIDE the tent, since it still absorbed water, with the tarp under the tent. This would encourage the young person to do a few more chores, or mow a few lawns [in the USA] to earn money for a better tent. OR, buy a top dollar tarp and learn to camp that way, with a diamond/ Adirondike set up [Joe Robinett's favorite tarp setup.] Everything has a season, and everything has it's place. We all have to start somewhere and that is usually with what we can afford. Thank you, for bringing us along.

I remember buying a cheap crappy Walmart RIG tent like that and I used it for a straight month before it started falling apart! I also utilized some of the same methods you did such as the tarp on the bottom used as a base sheet for the tent and another tarp on the top used as a wind and rain shield as well as some industrial 7 inch inch hook pegs used in combination with the cheap little pins they included with the set. BTW I really enjoy your bush crafting skills! Quite impressive in my opinion good stuff!👍👊💪 Thanks for the helpful TIPS!

Somewhere to keep all our food & somewhere to keep them central for lunch... And somewhere out of the breeze or (very occasionally) the sun for afternoon sleeps... And that was it's limit. i use a strainer that usally for tea and just put 2 fingers high of coffee in it , perfect amount for 0.5 L cup ...pour hot water over it , wobble it around for a few seconds, perfect aroma... and just a little fine sand in the bottom of the cup all the other stuff is retained. Cost literally a buck or two..metal mesh , sturdy and multi use.

The light/pump lools like a small pumpkin which is appropriate given it's halloween when I'm watching this video in Fremantle!

I would say it's a fake tent. It's essentially a shower proof toy/play den. I first saw these marketed as beach/garden tents, in Home Bargains. It seems that our demand for cheaper and cheaper options has led some retailers/sellers to re-market them as budget camping items. As you said, you could keep it for use as an emergency tent/one night bug out shelter, but I think after having it's shortcomings highlighted, it would be wise to cycle them out of your inventory.

My first time camping, I found out my old tent had no zip. So we had to drive to argos and I bought a £16 tent and yet somehow that tent has been an absolute MVP for storms and snow since. Idk what miracle happened in it's production to make it so good.

I've heard of some companies sinking cost on the first production batch of an item so people think it's great quality, then going cheap after that to get their profit back. It can take years before people stop recommending it after the quality has gotten terrible.

Back in 2002 I lived in a small tent in Holland, Germany, Poland and (AT that time) the recently separated USSR. It was a Saunders Space Packer. Sadly the company no longer exists but the tent does! 1.2Kg. Pitch the outer in under 4 mins. Outer first. I still use it in 2023. But then it was not cheap. Back then it was £275 but I knew what I was going to do and needed reliability.

I recently went camping with a cheap Wal-Mart tent in the pouring rain. You're supposed to have a tarp for a fly with the cheap ones. I stayed perfectly dry. Edit: Yeah, that tent is so much worse than the one I used 😂

I guess you get what you pay for. My 20€ Decathlon tent from 2010 is still doing great though. It has been a good shelter on many festivals since then, even in heavy rain and light storms. It features a proper ground sheet and some sort of ventilation though. Nice slowmotion shots. I like your videos.

Mike. I had an idea last year but it would involve a few KZreadrs just for the fun of it, but I'll say it anyway. The idea is to make a rubbish tent into a good one for the least amount of money. The rules: 1. Everyone has the same tent. 2. Sticking a tarp over the top of a leaky tent is against the rules, it just seems a quick way out. 3. Any alterations to the tent must look like they came out of the factory ( colour matching the fabric isn't included ) 4. Seam sealant tape, seam sealant are allowed, replacement of the floor is also allowed. 5. Any testing must include rain. There's other rules but I can't remember them. The whole idea is to have a good time and improve the tent for the lowest price. Given that the tent in this video had a cap on the top, the rules don't stop you making a bigger one or one that sticks out to make a porch. If you're interested in doing it then go ahead, it'll be fun. 😀👍

😮😊good video. I have a stove like yours and used it 3 days. It worked fine, the grill did not warp, but the ash pan Did not fit when I set it up at my daughters house😮. I will buy a better stove for my son-in law and granddaughters😊 thanks for sharing 😊

Dave Canterbury posted a recent video and showed his first use of a tent similar to your military tent. I think his was either French or Italian. New old surplus. It had many excellent features and was much lighter than the one you showed recently. I really liked yours for car camping because I liked the heavy weight material. His is probably half the weight, yet well built and lots of venting options that are all bug-netted. He used a spray on sealant on all the seams as a more confident waterproofing solution rather than finding out the seams would leak in heavy rain and snow. I believe it was around $60.00 USD. Has a bathtub floor in it too. Leaky tents can sure ruin a camping trip. ✌️🇺🇸 oh yeah, I have that same stove and I’ve had no warpage issues. I think my grill is a heavier duty grade of metal though. The stove was covered in a blue plastic covering and that was a pain to get off.

lidl years ago had a decent little 2 person tent that was £20-25, was great besides being single wall, although we used it for temporary storage and my mum decided to drag it full of stuff off the grass onto the paved part and wrecked the underside completely

I couldn't stop thinking about my Decathlon MH100 that I bought for festival season which is only £29 and seems sooooo much better than that crappy tent you used. Poor you ! Thanks for the experience anyway.

I'd try that tent on top of a lightweight camping cot. The cot would then double as a sitting spot, ground tarp, no sticks/rocks poking through the tent, and no thermal conduction from sleeping on the ground. You can also use a sleeping mat for extra comfort. Since the tent has no vestibule, having the cot would give you extra storage space under to keep things tidy and dry.
