Bushcraft Camp - Solo Overnight in the Super Shelter, Axe, Campfire, Lean to Shelter
Ойын-сауық
I head to the Bushcraft Camp for a solo overnight in the super shelter. After months of shelter building and camp updates, it has been nice to finally spend a night alone in the forest. I slept on the raised bed in the Giant Lean-to shelter, which I use as the primary shelter for the camp now. The secondary moss shelter will still get use in the future. The Hunting Tower and ladder are both still standing strong, and the new fire pit with air tunnel is working so well! I cook up some food on the grill, test out my new hand-forged axe, as well as attempt another primitive bow drill this time with soft wood. The woods were so peaceful at this time of year, and I am looking forward to bringing my Dog Jaxx along with me to the camp. With the tarp roof now raised, it has allowed much better air flow and the smoke flows right out of the camp. Since extending the perimeter walls of the camp there is much more room inside. Doing a solo overnight at the Bushcraft Camp helped me to spend more time developing some Bushcraft and Survival skills in the wilderness. Thanks for joining me on the adventure! - Mike

TA Outdoors Mike thanks for recommending "The Name of the Wind", in a previous episode. I had given up on modern fantasy years ago. Growing ever tired of the excess violence, and influence of Martin in current works. Rothfuss has crafted one of the best fantasy books of all time. I couldn't put it down. Thanks again. I'm off to find book 2.

I work nights here in the U.S. and it gives me alot to look forward to when I get home from work to make a little something to eat and watch your videos. Especially your overnighters in the shelters you've built. Thank you for your dedication to the things that make the outdoors so enjoyable! You rock buddy!

Have you ever thought about building a rain collection system either at the bushcraft camp or the pallet wood camp? Possibly utilizing a natural filter?

God only knows you'd need to ask the government. I just know it's illegal to collect rain water here in Oklahoma so that's what made me think it may not be legally permitted there.

You guys are way too much fun to be with! Thanx for that... 😘
I used a beer pouch in Thailand and I brought it home with me, the idea behind it is it stops the beer getting warm from the inside of your hand and also keep the cold from the can freezing the arse off your hand 👍
The little tips are much appreciated!
Finally get to see the hatchet in USE YES
100% prefer this video type over the ones where you do not talk. Pleas do this more often
Love your channel, I've been interested in off the grid living/ camping and survivalist training for about 10 years now and I've taught myself allot of things by watching KZread videos like this as well as going into the woods and trying it out myself. Thanks for your entertaining videos with your dad! I just lost my mom last month and she was really into all this stuff too. It makes me feel line she's still watching with me when I see you having fun with your dad! God bless you both be safe and keep up the good work!
That hatchet is awesome
Excellent video.. Always watch all the way through to the end. Nice to hear stories about you and your dad. My first night in my little cabin, there was bumping all around the walls of the cabin, I looked up at the East window and a shadowy figure rose up and began peeping in the window.. rotten horses! So I got up to shoo him away.. another horse had his nose buried in the fabric bag I had left on the porch.. and the third horse had gotten into the back of the truck and had the furniture strapping out and flinging it around. So I grabbed the push broom and chased them all away during the Snow Moon! Thanks for sharing your adventures!
"It's hot"......"bugga" Best line so far
Humble! Nice i love you and your Dad , thanks for the video !
Here in norway we call those wood lice for "coffee trolls" 😁
Always top stuff fella!!
Always a pleasure. Love the bird's song.
Love the idea of just being able tol reach into a woodpile and not have to worry about rattlesnakes. Lol Great axe!!!
Nice to see the working debut of Harry the Hatchet (little nod to Lock, Stock, and 2 Smoking Barrels "the Governor"). Looks like such a little brute! Great video again Mike!

You have a badger sett nearby...and they do dig for food: worms, grubs, small burrowing rodents. Badgers' Rest has never looked better than it does from the angle of your wood store and gate! Wish we could purchase apple-pork sausage like that in the USA! I suppose I could just make some...as I do make other sausages. The ax handle uses a Japanese charring technique to harden and to preserve wood against moisture, as well as making your particular ax look wonderful. Check out Shawn James and his treatment of wood sheathing for his cabin videos.) Finally, the bow drill fire: my least likely source of fire! Perhaps you could have roughed up the birch bark base layer. I noticed earlier in the video that the birch bark you harvested was light on oil.
RIP Super Shelter. You are missed
Its fun i remember watching your post when it first came out and here we are 2 yrs later and i can rewatch it like it was new. And u showed your higen kit and the first thing u pulled out was your hand sanitizer now 2 yrs later it's one of the most sort out thing stay sade

Bow hunting boars is a really stupid idea. You probably just make them angry, and angry boars are very dangerous.
Brilliant AXE....well done!
With respect to the previous comment about putting oil on your self made mallet. To protect the wood, brush on a couple of layers of boiled linseed oil. It can be bought already boiled and ready to apply. That's probably what the other viewer was referring to.

Always nice to have a Great new toy ! That’s Awesome !! Great job of making it ! Love it !
the burnt outside is the best of outdoor cooking over an open fire.
Ooo shiny new axe
"killing a bird with two stones" :) that's new one on me - looked like a beautiful hatchet when you made it, seeing it in action, WOW! well done Mike and Alec
It's really cool to see the hatchet you made in action. Well done!
your new hatchet is a great addition to your gear, that thing can get it done!!
I love the tenderness with which you handled the hatched you and Alec made. It's beautiful, and it's clear you treasure the fruit of your labor. :)

another great video . I want to thank you for all the tips as well as video's and the product reviews . Have learned a lot and starting to use it with safety always in mind THANKSSSS!!!!
Mike- Those beer 'covers' are insulation. If you leave them on while drinking, the beer warms more slowly. :)
Haha little Pat Dickerson accent in there, nice!
You sounded just like four dad when you were prepping the bangers. Lol.
your great mate ive been a woodsman and ranger for 40 years and your videos are so entertaining and educational , well done
that is THE most beautiful hatchet.
Wow man that hatchet is priceless
*I Love Your New Axe!* I love stuff that’s one of a kind that I made myself that’s the best kind of equipment or jewelry or anything to own! I made my own fall/winter crocheted blanket!
"You need at least 16 pigs, to finish the job in one sitting...". Brilliant reference brother!!
haha that hatchet is basically a sharpened wedge on a wooden handle. Awesome hatchet!
Nice hatchet! I like how it's 'ChardBlack' :) Looking forward to the next instalment.
I watched the vid of you two forging this hatchet and quite enjoyed it. Now it's good to see how useful it is.
The best burgers I ever had were when I was seven. My mom, dad, sister and I were clearing our plot of land to build our house and we were starving. Mom had a burn barrel going and she put an old fridge grate over it and cooked hamburgers for us... over burning poison ivy lol. She said in retrospect that probably wasn't a good idea....but they were soooooooo good. Either that or we were so hungry that we didn't care hehe.
Second comment, my apologies, but I forgot to suggest as far as your headlamp batteries issue, what I found so handy is to get a battery holder or case that normally gets stashed inside your kit somewhere, and attach a bit of webbing strap, or a clip of some type to the back and mount it to your headlight strap. You can usually carry two sets of batteries for a light and it keeps them close at hand should one set die, or you remove batteries from your headlamp when not using them. Nice thing is many headlamps have a separate battery compartment so it doesn't look unusual.
Great all in one vid, Mike... that hatchet is epic!!
Very creative firepit
Love that hatchet, really sweet.
Those sausages weren't burned. They had character!

Love the video. You always seem so relaxed with your topic and easy to listen to. I’ve always learned something new. The hot linseed oil really does work well on your wooden handles. My grandfather and dad always used it. Keep up great work!
I'm sure someone has beat me to it but just in case. I believe you were refering to "boiled linseed oil" to protect your bowling pin. You don't boil it, its just called "boiled linseed oil" They say when you get a new axe handle (untreated) you rub it on, wait, then rub it off. You do that every day for a week, once a week for a month, then once a month for a year, then once per year. Honestly, I'd just do the bowling pin one or two times. unless you're trying to save it for your grandchildren. Love your videos!
Great video. Thx for sharing
