Solo Overnight Camp - Stealth Tarp, Winter Camping in Cold Rain, 100 Year Old Tools.
Ойын-сауық
I head out to the Forest for a Solo Overnight Camping trip using a low-profile stealth tarp camp setup. It wasn't long before the cold rain came and as a challenge for this trip I tried to use vintage 100 year old tools. When I arrived in the woods I chose a good spot to camp in a small clearing in the forest. I set the tarp up between two pine trees and knowing that rain was in the forecast, I set the tarp up low to the ground to minimise the cold wind chill. This was filmed beginning of February so winter was in full swing in the UK. The Challenge was to try and use some old vintage gear to process firewood, light the fire and for general use around camp. It wasn't easy, as I soon found out when the axe head nearly came off when chopping wood. At one point a huge downpour of rain came, which almost got the shelter soaked. I cooked up some rice on the fire and collected more firewood for night.
Throughout the video I show how to set up a tarp, how to light a fire with natural materials and other winter camping and bushcraft tips. The following morning I had to get the fire going again, this time by traditional flint and steel. I cooked up some bacon and made a fresh cup of coffee! Hope you guys enjoy the adventure!

Good video. You could restore the axe completely by just cut the end of the existing handle and reshape the wood again, it would be slightly smaller but you would keep the original axe together for a while yet. Or a nice bit of Oak could do it justice.

TA Outdoors good that you use a low profile stealth-tarp but making a huge-ass fire, you totally understand the concept of "stealth"

TA Outdoors Always love watching your vids while I work. Hello from Vegas.
This video is painfully long and I love every minute of it. “Beer, rice, fire, woods, shelter...” I live through you. Love and support from New York!
Sitting here, trying to keep my cool after an argument with my old lady. This does the trick. Thank you TA Outdoors. Totally awesome!
I like that you're a responsible camper, taking care of the fire like that!
although I can watch you and others who bush craft I find sharing your knowledge with kids who do not have the opportunity to learn from their parents more satisfying. Today I was talking with a single mom about your site so I shared your videos. Thanks and keep up the challenges and camping real.
I took my young son out into the woods for the first time. We had a tarp, camp beds and sleeping bags. He used a King Alfreds cake to start a fire to keep us warm. After watching one of your videos I used the trap to trapping the heat of the fire in -4 weather. (UK). many thanks
I get the sense that this man wants to be, the very best, like no one ever was.
That feeling when you find a new channel full of top quality content. I can't remember the last time I watched a KZread video longer than 10 minutes! Awesome work!
Always great to finish off a long day at work with a brew and your videos. Keep it up and maybe get Alec to stay the night at your bushcraft camp! That would make for a good one.
Hey man, this is my first KZread comment ever. I have been watching for a few months now and I like your variety. This was a great video, long or not I enjoyed it. Thank you. Keep the great content coming please.
You should do a video with your dad showing how you re-handle the hatchet. Love the videos, keep em coming.
It was so good watching you T.A. displaying your fathers tools of yesteryear & how they were used in that era of your fathers time, knowing full well how they compared to the modern utensils of today. One thing I will say over time they were used to their full extent by the wear & tear shown in your video, so interesting & informative. So as always enjoy you guys n gals out n about doing off the grid survival treks, how respect for the environment is shown is the big plus for me & wish you well in your travels. Cheers
Those tarp knots are genius.
You always leave us wanting more and more and more! Thanks very much.. can't ever get enough!
Been binge watching your videos, for someone who suffers from depression and anxiety these videos are wonderful escapism thank you for these
i literally watch these videos before bed, really relaxing vibe
Nice beer from COLORADO!!! :) I am from Colorado, I know that beer... Cheers! I really like how you leave no trace! Thank you for showing that to others, we should all practice that. Keep our outdoors wild.
Mike thanks so much for being so consistent! You really inspire me to get outdoors and appreciate what nature has for us to enjoy! Thanks for the great videos!!!
Loving these videos. Miss your pops in it thought. From Los Angeles we are here watching and being inspired. Thank you .
The billhook is from a company called Thomas Staniforth & Co. The closed their last store in 1980. The were located in Hackenthorpe, by Sheffield.
Great vlog !!!with all the video games, phones and technology around its nice to see and hear the sounds of nature in the UK. I also think its great how you actually use all your subscribers gifts in your vlogs. well done x
Just found you on here....Love the videos! I'm from The USA....State of Mississippi....Been into bushcraft and survival since I was 13....46yrs old now and still love it!!!
Really enjoyed this video. Lots of detail on the tarp set up was useful. Nice job on starting two fires in wet weather, and impressive fire clean up!
Thank you for sharing! I like the relaxed overnighter videos with no ambitious projects :-)
1hr video of camping, liked as soon as the video page loaded

Really enjoy all of the TA Outdoor video's, keep em coming👍👍👌
Another fabulous video! Will definitely watch that blacksmithing upload. Thank you for sharing your experiences with us.
We all appreciate the walking away shots! Lol. Great video Mike!
As soon as I can I'm going out in my hammock again you've inspired me to get back outside and enjoy the peace and quiet of the outdoors
I love all your videos and I'm a 50 year old woman 👍❤️Xx
Another GREAT video! I learn so much each time. This time, it was the knots. So awesome for your Dad to let you bring his 100 year-old tools with you. WOW, they are something else. If only they could talk and tell us all the projects they have worked on, places they've been! Again, thanks, for posting a great video, TA Outdoors!!!!
Hey mike big fan from Pennsylvania US. Love how you English fellas are so much more proper and polite than us Americans lol keep up the great content make sure to post you opening fan mail love to see all the great gifts
I’m from south Texas, I love your videos and I love my 🍺 too! Cheers!
Great watch. Thanks bud. Been watching bushcraft on youtube for years but 15 seizures a day stopped me going out and doing it. Ive now finally got all the gear i need to go and been seizure free for 15 weeks so planning on doing my first camp in the next couple of weeks. Like a kid waiting dir christmas.

That's awesome news Luke, really pleased you are on the mend. Enjoy the camping life buddy!
Great video! These are the best to come home to and watch after a long day at work. Looks like so much fun!
Meet ups are always great fun! We do it quite a lot in the motorvlogging community.
Night camping and fishing...in the rain. Good memories of my total 8 years living in England. I lived in Thetford next to the huge forest and loved it. It would be brilliant to attend a gathering of bushcrafters to learn techniques and improve skills, to share adult beverages and talk story. Another wonderful video. Thank you!
Amazing. Did not think i would learn so much from one simple video. Thx!
Good to see you out of the camp again, Mike. I have actually skipped a couple of videos, as it's been mainly about building, not foraging. Nice one!
I respect. Garbage after himself did not leave
Ok I have been a bit shy but just had to subcribe to the best channel ever...this guy is learning bit also teaching in a brillant fashion...look how he cares about the camera and what we are seeing...he hold craft up to the camera that it feels like it entets your room...do you feel like you are there with him?...he is enduring all sorts of weather and sometimes when he feels rough...how amazing is this chap and the family too? He is there alone doing all the camera work shots...and so normal sharing a learning curve with us..."please don't go out" he says talking about the fire in the rain...better than anything on tv...I knew I was hooked and tried to resist subscribing but I cannot...thank you Mike and your Dad and family...you feel like family...totally awesome...look after yourself take care and got loads more to catch up on being new...hope we are all lucky too having you around on here...yeahhhhh...
Great video! It is very obvious you love what you're doing! So knowledgeable about it all! Thanks.
I had that very knife when I was a kid. Brought back many memories...
Nice to see you happy and thankful Mike 👍 wouldn't be worth doing otherwise. Keep up the great work fella
Hello mike that hatchet is called a Kent hatchet this hatchet was developed during the 18th century in England and was widely adopted by American carpenters. The hatchet had a straight edge sharpened like a knife and a light poll behind the handle. It was used for hewing & general house framing. Keep up the good vids 🤘🤘
Awesome stuff mate. You have inspired my fam to get out and enjoy the bush.
These videos are excellent , and so are the comments, which I find very interesting. Anyway thanks for all your efforts.
Can’t get enough of these. Dying to get out there more and build my skills- only have done a few overnighters but want to do MORE. Also love that knife!! I’m a woodworker and have those norton combo stones but I’ve always used them wet (and soaked) for chisel sharpening. Next time make a little slurry with water or spit (lol) and see if you find a cleaner edge. Cheers from the PNW 🌲US 🇺🇸
you make me happy, that knife is the first I've ever had, 30 years back :) it was forgotten by me
I used to be a butcher and here in the US that's not bacon at all but a very thin boneless rib chop. It's interesting seeing how different the same things are across cultures. Also with the fact that that beer is sold at a supermarket 5 minutes from my house but is exotic to you. Thanks for the experience brother
I love discovering your back catalogue, fantastic stuff.
another brilliant therapy session ! thanks for the awesome entertainment!!!
The sharpening stone your dad owns is a very good brand, I recommend holding in to it
You should do a restoration video for your dads hatchet. Its such a nice and old tool, it earns it 👌
Really enjoyed the video. Nice axe. The old things are the best. Thanks for sharing. Grtz
Mike I greatly enjoy your videos and I look forward to them all. If ever I am in England one day I hope to meet you and your Dad. Oh and Jax as well.
It's always fun to use dad's tools!
As we say up north, a long time ago when I was a lad. I used to light the fire for my Gran & my mother, and always in the coal cellar/coal shed was an hatchet like the old one of your dads, it was used for chopping kindling with the sharp blade and the square anvil end was used for breaking large coal cobs into small coal lumps for the fire. Hope that helps with the history background of your hatchet.
Thank you for sharing this with a fellow American i enjoyed so much thank you so much
So enjoy all your videos Mike! Great content, editing and your personality reaches out to anyone watching. Cheers from across the pond in Pennsylvania!
Great Stuff as always, great to see you make a good fire from start and damp wood
Great video as usual...can't wait to see Dad and the catch and cook...
I find it very satisfying to watch your videos. Not putting on airs, just keeping it real. You certainly earned a sub from me. 👍
Brilliant video on solo Overnight Stealth camping , like the tools
:) At 17:05, I like my fingers. My dad's trick was using the of a nail to see if the edge bites. Basically, say indicator's nail, finger down 45o, then rest blade on nail on own's weight. If it bites its sharp (obviously various degrees of sharpness depending on its grip). keep'em coming.
Awesome video once again! Love the tarp tent setup, and the tips on starting s fire with everything wet from this and the last vid.
Great overniter! Did one this past weekend with two other outdoor enthusiast . A great way to connect with nature and ourselves !
Good video do more like these it's what bushcraft etc is all about
OMG I had the same knife 40 years ago from my dad, what memories this has given me , wow thanks I njow know how much I loved that knife , exactly the same.
Renegade! Fun surprise from my neck of the woods. 🍻
going through my back log of videos while WFH video 80 of 122 at this point, thanks to you and the Pullen family.
just when i need a break from reality and cant actually get into nature - you deliver
i´ll love to see you try and make tools out of stones and materials that you can find into a woodsland.
Hi there. Keep the view coming. The axe is a pleaching axe. It's designed for traditional hedge laying. :)
Your videos have really inspired me to gather the necessary equipment and tools and just do it go out and practice the skills of fire making and cooking Etc. And I must tell you doing it from growing up as a kid I suck at it now but continue to strive. My experience the other day with about 5 or so different methods to light a fire when it had previously rained that morning. All failed. And I felt horrible that I could not start a simple fire
Awesome Video Mate...Your Videos Made Me Take My Friends Camping Last Week...They Loved It!!!!!
These solo overnighters are great. Love the channel Mike. It would be fun to see you do some longer trips, though!
Save the box of the sharpening stone, taht's wonderful!
I enjoyed it a lot. So satisfying to see such a wonderful day and night in the woods. More of these please.
Enjoyable as always. Hello from not so distant London.
Definitely one of my favorite tarp setups
Great video pal, am absolutely terrible at tying tarp knots, and after watching numerous vids on youtube to try and learn to no avail, thanks very much, as your explanation into tying tarp ridgeline knots was really explanatory and slow so I could digest the information. All the best to you and your dad. Nick
Awesome video Mike, thanks for sharing the old tools.
Haven't been able to get outdoors, but your videos. Along with the likes of Survival Lilly, Bushcraft Heroes, Joe Robinette, and Sean James really help me to get a vicarious fix. You don't just share your adventure, but a bit of your life as well. You keep posting, I'll keep watching.
Great vid again mate just sat chilled out with a few beers watching you and your little overnight camp very relaxing well for me anyway lol
Great video thanks, nice to see you using the grass to get the morning fire going. There is so much of that on Dartmoor at this time of year, I go out and collect it by the bag load and it lasts me for months. I’m really enjoying your content, thank you.
I have a lot of things to say , however they are all personal and you make valid points for what you do. All I would say though is keep the old tools as they are for memorys sake . Make new ones with Alec Steele. Your videos are very relaxing when just chilling out Keep them coming .Cheers Paul
Seeing you walk into the woods with just a bag confirms to me that my low roof vw t5 van is not too small to convert and travel in! Great effort.
2:19 srry i could not help myself from thinking, thats what she said !! great videos, like em a lot !!
First of your videos I have watched. You kept me on the edge of my seat so I subscribed. Huge fan of camping in non-perfect conditions.
@37:20, all you've really gotta do to keep it going at this stage is blow on the base of the fire a bit to keep it stoked. Really cool videos.
Nice show. At 6:25, I usually wrap up the loose cord in a nice bundle and use that instead of the stick. Come to think of it, you use a small bundle (from even two or three loops would do) on the other side and use that instead of that stick as well.
Loving the longer videos Mike! Great set up.
Can't wait your new video you are so cool and I like your videos
Mike you are the best... Great video... I love see them.... Cheers from Argentina dude....
Was waiting for another Solo Overnight Camping! Another Great Vid.Thank you, Mike

great one TA !!! Thanks TA. you have great shows :)
I am surprised that one sheet becomes a tent. I thought that the way the ropes were knotted was adjustable, very good.
