Would you put the toothpick in the narrow end of the asparagus? If so, it seems like that would reduce the integrity of the vegetable.

One time when I made them I did toothpicks at both ends. Another time I made them, I used skewers at the top and bottom. I had about 6-8 aparagus skewed with a skewer at the top and the top. Alot of work, and unless you really care about the appearance, its not worth it in my opinion.
