Same on the "German" part - all of my family as far back as grandparents were born in Berlin and a LOT of the "sordid activities" were relatable as both of my grandmothers did what they had to in the 20's and 30's after WWI and the Reparations to keep a roof overhead and to feed their kids. Both Oma's had children "out of wedlock" during those years, namely my mom and my dad. When I finally discovered their "dirty secrets" that no one ever spoke about regarding who their fathers were, my heart ached for them. It made me feel closer to them than I could have ever imagined and this show, whenever I catch a reference or implication to that "lifestyle" it tugs at my heart. Plus, it's a really great show!

I thought season 3 went off the rails with the scooby doo mystery at the film studio. Also as a conrad vedit fan I did not appreciate the way he was parodied in that season. But the first two seasons were brilliant and I still adore all the characters. The acting and the direction are so good.

Great job, guys. Yes, I'm absolutely thrilled about the upcoming new season. Here are a few observations of mine: Charlotte is holding two guns and firing one of them in the same room where the trial scene took place. It's the secret organization "Weiße Hand" - the white hand on the wall is a clue. Charlotte and Toni will uncover and pursue them according to the article I found online. The evil joker with a red wig is a souteneur from the Luxor club where Charlotte got involved in a gang bang in S3 when she needed money for her sister's surgery. That person was reading the script and the action unfolded according to it. You are right, they didn't show Gräf, the Armenian or Moritz in the trailers. It's weird because they were important in the previous seasons. But Rudi is back in the picture. Seems Charlotte is enjoying his company in her bed.

The "evil joker" is actually called Edwina Morell and appears in season 4 again and this time hosting a cabaret. Edwina is portrayed by cabaret artist Madame Le Pustra.

As far as I can find out, Season 4 has never been streamed or otherwise allowed to be broadcast in the USA -- please post if anyone knows where! I did however find it on an EU-format UK DVD-set in a US-CO public library and managed to binge-watch it in time to return it when due after buying a player!

I've read the English translations of the first four or five novels. The showrunners were given a lot of freedom by the novels' author, Volker Kutscher, in writing the scripts; the show does not slavishly follow the novels, to say the least. Now, all of us American fans of the show get to wait patiently for season 4 to reach U.S. Netflix. Hopefully, it'll drop in the U.S. before the end of the year. Stay tuned...

And, btw, if you don't already know this, the character Reinhold Graf (Christian Friedel) heads a great pop band called Woods of Birnam (yes, this is a reference to Macbeth). Definitely check them out!

Hello, I only recently found this show, while i was looking for German language shows. I found your podcast only yesterday, when I was searching for the season 4 trailer. Thank you so much for the time and effort you guys put in, to break the down the two trailers. Here are some of my thoughts. Firstly, I think the thought that something has happened with Toni in the past season due to which she is running away from her sister does seem logical. And from the way Season 3 panned out, I think every plot point is important and can't be ignored. The bathtub scene with Toni was kind of abruptly cut short, as far as I recollect it was not followed through in any further episodes, like the other plot points. It feels like something definitely happened that day, that will have repercussions in the way Tonis story line pans out. I also feel the reason Toni is rebelling is because Charlotte hid the letters from her. As far as the romantic interest of Frau Behnke is concerned, it feels like it is either going to be a new character or it will be the daughter of Seegers. Because the person I think in the trailer with Frau Behnke is someone wearing glasses. I don't recollect Katelbach wearing glasses in the series, but I could be wrong. As far as the German language pronunciation goes, the written and the spoken is not alike. I am learning German myself right now, so I say this from my own experience. I can share some tips with you, that potentially will help you out. In the name "Lotte" or any German name/word ending in the letter "e" will be pronounced similar to the "a" in the word "amazing", expect it is not as stressed out as in amazing. In the name "Stennes" the first e is kind of similar to how you would say the letter A, when you say the english alphabet by itself. The "ie" in German word is pronounced similar to english "E". The "ei" in German is pronounced similar to english "I". Hope this helps. If you have any other questions around pronunication please feel free to ask me.

Now I need to hear from Oberst Wendt something like "say good night to the bad guy" or "say hello to my little friend." Anyway, excellent breakdown and interesting speculation about the trailers. Not unlike the first three seasons, there are things I forgot or missed from the second trailer you reviewed (I didn't know about the subtitled trailer until you mentioned it). Yet another reason why Babylon Berlin is basically the only show I recommend to people unsolicited (and the characters and the plotlines and the set design and the music and the clothes... and of course, the historical lessons we continue to not heed).

As of October 10th, 2022 - no idea. Because Neflix wants to drop all episodes at once, where as the Sky channels drops 2 episodes weekly -- we can do some math and assume. Sky will release the 11th and 12th episode on the weekend of November 12th, 2022. Therefore, it could be on Netflix in the U.S. as soon as that weekend. I'd suspect tho, we'd be looking at a release in December or January. True fear: The public channel in Germany, ARD won't get the series until late 2023?!?

I do have the theory that the armenian dies. 1. There's the gang war going on 2. There's a scene where some big car blows up right in front of the Moka Efti 3. Esther is screaming/crying idk in a really short scene + mostly seen with Walter 4.Also her as a singer at the Moka Efti would probably be smth that Edgar wouldn't approve at all?? Idk if these are 'solid' facts to prove that theory but idk, it's just really confusing that he isn't in a single scene in one of the trailers when one of the main plots is a gang war.

The Armenian has always been one of my favorite characters. Worried about Edgar. Hopefully he can just be in a coma all season long and come back for season 5

The character at 25:05 (in the crowd that you weren't able to identify but suspected correctly is Bohm) was in season 3 and is the detective that no one likes (neither his colleagues nor the viewers) because he's such a prig and is self righteous. He seems to especially have it in for Charlotte. There was a scene in season 3 where we saw him at home with his wife and son. He seems like a would be "climber" at the office with the stick up his ass who seems to exist to make life miserable for everyone else. At 29:10 Helga is slapping someone with white hair. Is it Nyssen with a wig or the new character who resembles Nyssen with white hair that we see throughout the trailer? Maybe Nyssen is impersonating this guy for some reason and Helga doesn't approve. Don't know. At 29:55 Yes, that is Malu Seegers (with a new hairdo) and guess who she's having an affair with (hint: not the guy in this shot)? At 36:40 the man with the slashed throat seems to be the same man in the club with Weintraub. I suspect he is responsible for Edgar's death (just a guess). Too bad that Bryan Ferry is missing from the trailers. As a big fan of his, I would love to see him back for more cameos.

Guys, the character you're unsure about (wondering if it's Graf/"the Joker"!?) has previously appeared and is played by the wonderful Le Pustra of Kabarett Der Namenlosen. C'mon now! 😊😅

Spoiler ahead: Yes they do. They finally express their feelings while make a mess of the kitchen at the end of episode 6.

Im german, my father was from a family of prussian knights in the Berlin area - v Schönefeld - and officer in the 3rd Reichs army. He died when i was 8 and told me unfiltered for years instead of kid stories. In families "of birth"there is no pseudo-reality for kids.Things are made clear as is. Now i am 72 and i was taught that "the stories" have one relevance only: to form the future. As soon as i could memorize all his told and written papers i burned them. We do that - thats how history is written in the whole world. Its funny to hear nongermans presenting what happened in Berlin those days. Its well produced and harmless entertaining compared with what went on. Good so.

Short sighted decision by Netflix to cancel its presence on the platform from 28th February 2024. What are they thinking? Is it cost or isn't the series getting the audience. It is. Masterpiece and the production values are some the most extensive I've seen in recent years. So they've cancelled its presence and dont even take Season 4! Come on Hulu,Prime,MAX - one of you pick it up NOW!

The actor at 27:05 who is supposed to be Goldstein doesn't fit the description of Goldstein in the novels at all. In the novels Goldstein is much younger, has a stronger physique and doesn't have gray hair

_"Nyssen"?!?_ Your favorite character?!? Uggghhh... 🤦‍♂️ he's my _least_ favorite! Definitely an amazing performance, tho... Looks like a return to form for the show. I thought season 3 had a few weak moments - the paranormal scene at police headquarters, the reveal of the forensic specialist as the culprit, etc - but it also had some jaw-dropping ones (the car crash, Charlotte's rush to the prison to save her friend, the final scene at the stock exchange)... just hoping for the consistency of the first two seasons.

We love Nyssen because of the performance. Every time his mother beats him down, an angel gets her wings :)

Since no one is alive from this era, its hard to appreciate what the economics were like. Fact is, times were very difficult. Because of the extremes of the Treaty of Versailles, Germany is over burdened with debt causing an extreme inflation wiping out the savings and fortunes of the populace making them susceptible to the Nazi Ideology. Also note that most of the Nazi's were in the cities such as Berlin. Gereon has an uphill battle in this season.

Mmm, Berlin was actually still very “red” in early 1931, although the fascist press/Goebbels had made a lot of headway. The NSDAP had a very strong following among rural Germans for years.

Also, although it was in no way generous, the Treaty of Versailles was not as extreme as the antagonists of the Weimar government liked to portray it. The Great Depression touched Germany, too, not as severely as it did in America, but close. Season 3 covers this pretty well.

Honestly, I think that was about the reflection of that time period and place. A great example of this is when she’s given her test on crime scenes and is failed because of being a woman, even though she did better than the men on the exam. She’s poor and a woman. I found it surprising they even let her attain that rank in the police department.

Det. Bohm was especially terrible to Charlotte, and at the end of season 3, he got wiped out in the stock market crash. Sweet Justice, but even that is tough, because his family didn't deserve to go down with him.

@@DoublePMedia Anita Berber was a very famous Weimar dancer and singer. She was -the- “Miss Babylon Berlin”. This character is played by the performer La Pustra, who owns a very successful cabaret. Art imitating life a bit. La Pustra is a very lovely person.

Big fan of the book series and therefore happy, that we see Goldstein, however, remembering how much they changed from the original material in season 3, I'm already annoyed from a few scenes in these trailers. Many of the sidecharacters and stoylines just seem so out of place for me. However, seeing Gereon in the SA-uniform made me pretty curious! Personally, I can't imagine him actually joining the nazis, it's prabobly an undercover investigation or something. But it for sure makes for some great drama between Charlotte and him :D

The only book that I've read is the second book: THE SILENT DEATH - and it was SO different from the 3rd season of Babylon Berlin - I stopped reading the books!

@@DoublePMedia I guess it depends on what you experienced first :D I read the books first and therefore was put off by the show. I can honestly recommend giving the other books in the series a go. There a so many great character moments, especially between Gereon and Charly!

I agree on the fact I don't see Rath joining the SA out of personal conviction, especially given how he hides Kattelbach and doesn't seem too keen on Moritz joining the HJ. Fully backing the undercover work theory ! I wonder how long he'll have too lie to Ritter about it, evidently disappointing her a lot. So much drama and angst, can't wait.

@@Loweene_Ancalimon in the trailer he said to her that he was “only doing his duty” but she was pissed and didn’t want to hear his explanations. Probably she will find out that he is undercover in some other way, not through his explanations.

I could totally see Moritz becoming a Nazi. (I think he’d already joined the Nazi Youth?) Gereon becoming a Nazi would be absolutely heartbreaking.

Seriously are you that less educated in history??? This is all what happened in Germany in that time! This is not an invention of those film people. Don't be that naive!

Of course the events portrayed in the series are inspired by the real German history but the film people exaggerate many things to make it more thrilling to watch

It was my favourite show... Now I personally can't watch it any longer since the main actor has become a right wing antivax corona-denier (not cancel culture from my part, just can't bear the sight of him after what he said). So... i'll check out the books...

And they filmed season 4 during covid, so if he was driving the producers crazy, would they cut Rath entirely??? I'm still shook that the producer quote reads “It is a joy and at the same time a thrilling fascination to see Charlotte and her combatants bring characters and arcs from the previous seasons together with power and emotion in ever new daring ways.” That positions Charlotte as the lead, not Rath! Would they kill the character off to free themselves from having to deal with the actor?

@@DoublePMedia Bruch's radicalisation during covid put the producers in a very difficult position. Still I don't think they would kill a main character off in the in the middle of production. As far as potential future seasons (?) are concerned, who knows..

@@shrinkhh79 one of the directors (can’t remember which one) said they were hoping to do the fifth season. I can’t imagine Gereon not being in the series and replacing Volker with another actor seems even more unlikely. It just wouldn’t work and I don’t think it’d be worth it for anyone involved.

@@Fififogone I agree that they probably won't replace him. If he had gone ahead and joined actually that holocaust-relativist party things might have been different, but since the end of the covid lockdown Bruch has managed to stay out of the headlines, so no need for them to do kick him out...
