If only a reactionary anti-democratic military coup had violently installed a regressive once-failed-already monarchist regime led by a warmongering racist imperialist with a government full of all the conservatives that welcomed the Nazis into power in real life. A year before the Great Depression. 68 thumbs up. Have any of you actually WATCHED this wonderful show, or are you all just monarchy fetishists?

I ever saw this series but was this not a slightly weird shift for the police chap charechter? The clips of him I’ve seen on KZread always show him as being Farley down to earth.

At the time, there's pretty much no better choice than Wilhelm. Socialism or Communism will lead Germany into an anarchy like what happened during Russian Civil War. Weimar Republic had already proof itself incompetent in protecting Germany remaining interest and honor after allowing the French army to occupy the Ruhr Valley without any political or military retaliation. They were also full of corruption and is worry about their own power more than people well being. Nazism and Fascist is not a thing yet even though Mussolini had already declare the formation of Fascist Italy 3 years earlier (this episode is set in 1925). The only good alternative in their eyes is to reset everything back to pre-WW1 state, Kaiser and Imperialist.

That's what I love about this scene. It's the mix of frightening conspiracy and reactionary violence that comes from the same place that in a few years would empower the Nazis, but also the somewhat pathetic lack of imagination that comes with all monarchists and aristocrats. He's the KING, of COURSE he'll come back and be WELCOMED back, this is how things are SUPPOSED to be.

@@Heylanda-fb9xb This episode is set in 1928, same as the rest of the season. Fascism was already a thing, as noted by your own point about Italy, but the Beer Hall Putsch was several years past as well. These characters would have dismissed it as a vulgar group of street thugs. While these are of course the characters' views and not your own, I felt compelled to write out a few rebuttals from a historical perspective: The flaws of the Weimar Republic have nothing to do with it being a republic, and everything to do with being an industrial state that lost a world war and destroyed its own economy rather than tax the rich to pay reparations as France did after 1871, and with being ruled by liberal centrists and all the contradictions of capitalist social democracy. Germany was an industrialized state with a well-educated populace and intelligentsia, and therefore would have been prime ground for a prosperous Socialist or Communist state. The chaos of the Russian Civil War had more to do with it being a civil war involving the collapse of a vast and diverse empire (nothing like Weimar Germany), the contiguous and preceding WWI, and the foreign intervention of the Western Allies on every accesible coast and border, than the simple fact of Communists coming to power. A communist Germany would have staved off both the excesses of the Soviet Union (brought on by them being de facto under siege for literal decades) by giving them a more moderate friend and ally. and prevented the rise of fascism (which is a capitalism society responding to its own condtradictions). This is oversimplifying things a bit, but it's clear that the murder of Rosa Luxemburg is a tragedy with still-unfolding consequences. Overall, these were military aristocrats operating in their own self-interest with a handful of enforcers to back them up. Their love of the Kaiser came from the same place as their love of the military--class interest. They were divinely ordained to be the ruling class and all the problems in the country would be magically resolved if they were in charge, simple as that.
