That story about the hat maker was told by Franklin to amuse Jefferson. He told it as a humorous anecdote even as the congress was editing Jefferson’s draft, by way of trying to distract TJ from the process.

Should have said "Life, Liberty and Property." Instead of "pursuit of happiness." Pursuit of Happiness is to vague and ends up meaning nothing. The government is far to busy involving itself in our private property.

Thank you for sharing your perspective, good Citizen. As things developed, it appears that all of those terms are subject to debate regarding their legally applicable meanings. While I do stand by my choice to change "property" to "pursuit of happiness," I am open to your suggestion that the document would have been more effective had I opted otherwise.

While happiness may seem vague, it also includes happiness to own property and thousands of other things. Property is specific and it ends there; happiness is inclusive and thus means everything

Pursuit of happiness has a great deal of meaning, it means that everyone deserves a chance to pursue a happy and successful life. It might seem obvious today that people should have a right to such a thing, but it certainly was not obvious in the late eighteenth century.
