There are a lot of really great ones, like DS9, BSG, Firefly, et al. But I have to agree, B5 outdoes all of the competition. IMO, Andreas Katsulas made the show what it was.

@115041863468127496958 I agree with most of your comments, but: DS9 had too many 'Trek' mistakes (like a sizealtering Defiant, episodes that went nowhere or where totally outside the current storyline. Galactica was utter rubbish - having been a soldier myself, I saw way too many tactical mistakes and the end was about as satisfiying as that of Lost. Firefly is second on my list of sci-fi greats, it died way too soon but I'm keeping the Verse alive through role-playing (yes, I am one of those geeks).

Rudolf Trost lmao well as you can tell from my name I was just as dissatisfied with BSG's ending as well, but I can not helped but be immersed in the show when I watch it. I think it's something to do with the plausibility of the survival scenario. I'm a marine veteran and didn't have too much difficulty getting past them, which probably made me like the mutiny *way* too much. Always gets my blood boiling. DS9 was a revelation into trekdom and actually had a storyline with continuous arcs. While every ST series has their independent story episodes, I typically enjoy them, but I feel DS9's were the best of each series. The darker side to ST was a welcome change and the war, well, the war was epic, however I wouldn't have minded a less "religious" (if you can call it that) theme to replace the victory over the dominion in the wormhole. I really wish Firefly could have continued. I'll never could fathom how it could have been struck down in it's infancy while holding so much beautiful potential. I'm just thankful there was at least some sort of closure. How do you role play? It sounds fun. While SG-1 is completely different I still rank it up there with these series. They may have pushed on a little too much with the Ori, but between the Goa'uld and the Wraith from Atlantis, they made for some nasty enemies.

Thanks for your lengthy essay GMMAA, I really enjoyed it and agree with you on most topics you mentioned. Personally, I think that the Replicators from SG-1 and Atlantis are the most frightening opponents anyone could encounter in a SF-setting. How do you Role-play? Well, friend, if you don't know, welcome to a great new experience. Go to Google and type in 'Atomic Highway' for a FREE downloadable Dystopian Role- Playing Game. As far as introductions go, this is a very good one. RPG' do not require much - someone brave enough to take on the mantle of the Games master, a few friends (3-6), pen and paper and some dice, a few snacks and drinks and the willingness to become someone else for a short time. I've been playing (mostly as a game master) for 32 years now and have never looked back. I switch between Fantasy (Warhammer Fantasy Role-Play 1st edition), Horror (Call of Cthulhu), Western (Coyote Trail) and SF (Babylon 5, Firefly, Star Trek, SG-1 and most recently Atomic Highway). If you give it a try, please keep me informed of any questions you might have and progress you make.

***** Is it cold under your bridge? Does everybody around you behave like a goldfish (chances are you are one too). DS9 was a copy of 5, if you bothered to do some research you would have known that. But the main factor here is that you did not get past the first few minutes/episodes. B5 set the standard for ALL modern Sci-Fi series with its pioneering CGI, and its story-arc (which takes some time to develop in an understandable manner, I grant you that). The acting is WAY better than the puppets in 'Farscape,' you just don't like to see a war veteran at late middle age. I challenge you to go back and see the entire series and then come back and tell me this is not the greatest Sci-Fi series ever! I'm sure you'd rather keep in your safe 'I know better' place, but at least I watch an entire series before calling it crap and consider myself well-informed. And, by the way, learn how to write capital letters and abreviations before commenting on a show that only somewhat intelligent people can watch...

I was just watching the space city con B5 reunion with an empty seat that was suppose to have been for Mr. Doyle who could not make it to that convention sadly. At the end of that convention the cast members reflected and advised us to appreciate the moment the day, the people in our lives as you never know when they will leave us. I got very misty eyed at their comments esp. now adding Mr. Doyle to that list. He had always reminded me of a kick ass character like Bruce Willis.

It's astonishing how many have left us -- especially those born in the 50s and 60s. B5 was a very important show for me in my late teenage years. I had cancer during much of its incredible 3rd season and waiting each week for a new episode kept me going through the worst of the chemo. Thanks you, JMS and crew.

When this show originally aired on tv I was a young mother working two jobs and tv was not a priority. Just last year I came across some vhs tapes of season one at a thrift shop. I took them home watched them and became so hooked on the show I set out to acquire every episode of all five seasons as well as the movies. Best investment ever. JMS told a terrific story and the actors were superb. I still hear Andreas voice in my head when I read some of the books and fan fiction that's out there. Would love to see them continue the story some day.

Some of the best dialogue writing I can recall in a TV series, especially listening to G'Kar. His speech about freedom when he was removed from the B5 council...his declaration of principles...his oath of office for the President of the Interstellar Alliance. I wish I had even half the writing talent of some of those people.

His death hit me hardest for several reasons - I had met him several times at conventions and he was always kind and polite and was an amazing auctioneer; the ages of his sons when he passed (2 and 4); and the way I found out about his death - from some soap opera magazine while standing in the grocery store line (He was on "Days of our Lives" for quite a few years). I still have such a feeling of loss when I think of him.

I loved that show and have all of it on DVD. Twenty years since it began; I had no idea so many involved had passed away. Having Mr. Katsulas' voice with that resonant quote "I believe that when we leave a place, part of it goes with us and part of us remains" brought me to tears. The show was about a history; and with history, people pass and other generations enter the world. Such is the case of art imitating life. Thanks to Mr. Straczynski and all who brought Babylon 5 into being, a resonant mythology, from the names of the starships to the complex characters and sheer sweep of the series.

I am not surprised. Babylon 5 was not just some other TV show to fill some time slot on some network. It was project that was given such care and planning even before filming, to the point that all five seasons were written up before the start. Then there were the actors who not only managed to show true emotion, but make their characters become truly alive. To the point that when the actor who portrayed said character dies it is like losing a close friend. But as G'kar once said, "Long after we are gone, our voices will echo threw these walls for as long as it remains." So long as we all remember, and pass on Babylon 5 to the next generations, they will never truly die.

What a beautifully well edited tribute. The recent summer 2016 passing of Mr. Jerry Doyle brought me here. It's hard to believe that so many of those wonderful actors are gone and how much they contributed to B5 making it such a great scifi show. They all took their roles so seriously that even while wearing make up and costume and as aliens too they worked hard to be as believable and convincing as they good in bringing their characters to life. Also you could really feel the chemistry between many of the cast members how well they worked together and played off of one another like one big family of working so closely together for so long. One gets wrapped up with the characters and story arcs where they become like an extended family each week. I actually got a bit misty eyed seeing this and remembering watching the eps. and actors along with my parents. We watched this show as a Family . Hard to believe that so much time has gone by and now my own parents are gone too. The B5 cast members said at the end of a reunion con that they learned to never take anyone or anything for granted and you never know when they will be taken away so appreciate each day and each person in your life.

I was at that 20th Anniversary panel, and it still astonishes me that they ran this video with 20 minutes to go. Especially with Michael O'Hare's death, and JMS' Promise panel finally revealing the mental illness that precipitated his departure, so fresh in our minds, everyone in the auditorium was a mess after this. Especially the cast on stage, remembering all the friends they'd lost. They soldiered on, but this should have been the closer.

What a superb tribute to a true classic of science fiction TV. I for one still watch the DVD box-sets at least twice a year. 20 years covers two thirds of my life and what a series to spend five years growing up to. R.I.P. to all those who've been lost.

I have been doing a rewatch of the whole show, getting my girlfriend into it. It is one of the most important shows in my life. And seeing this today really touched me. It is sad that so many wonderful people are gone. At least we have the show to watch over and over, and keep their performances alive. Godspeed to all.

Beautiful memorial to fantastic actors and crew who made this amazing seasons spanning tale, without which we would not have had the likes of shows like Lost, Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad today. Before Babylon 5, no studio believed that you could make a show that spanned over seasons and keep an audience engaged for that time. Babylon 5 broke that mold and TV has never been the same since. RIP

The beginning part is the music used in the intro to B5's "The Lost Tales" DVD movie, the second part (I found this in another comment further down) the track "Tristan & Yvaine" from the soundtrack to "Stardust"!

What a beautiful tribute. Well done. I didn't realize that we had lost so many of the people connected with this amazing show. Babylon 5 was well ahead of its time, yet in many ways it's timeless. Michael J Straczynski had an amazingly firm finger on the pulse of the human condition, a creative intellect that shows the full depths of the Seven Deadly Sins along with the illuminating and inspirational Seven Heavenly Virtues. My wish is for all folks today to re-watch this amazing series. It tells an insightful story that peers into the hearts - both the wicked and the noble - of mankind.

I'm watching B5 again and can't believe it's been so long since I first watched it. It was probably in 1997, since that was when it aired in Finland for the first time. I still have some of the VHS tapes of season 1. I had no idea we'd lost so many of the people involved in B5. RIP.

June 17th and now very sadly we have lost our beloved Vir Cotto played by Stephen Furst whom died just before Father's Day, sad. He was only in his early 60's and though he lost a lot of weight he lost his battle with Diabetes . I loved his sweet child like innocence in his characters as on the TV show he did St. Elsewhere as well. We've lost too many of these wonderful actors and our childhood icons

This show defines me and my time at university and I still watch the show from the pilot to the last movie every spring. I remember that we were a group of friends that awaited each new episode with the great anticipation of a child at Christmas - it was thanks to a friend in California who recorded it on VHS and mail it to us in Sweden every week that we were able to see the episodes just a few days after they aired. I once met Mr Biggs in 2000-2001 and I have never me a more awesome guy.

I'm here so many years after, and more have left us. We can't say it, but to me the show feel cursed, as we lost so many actors around the age of 60. In this day and age, 60 is very young. But here in 2023, Babylon 5 is finally going to get a Blu-Ray release. I hope this will bring it to more new fans all over the world.
