Babylon 5: In Memory of Richard Biggs
Ойын-сауық
In May 2004, we lost Rick Biggs much too early to an unexpected heart problem. Rick and I had always been friends at conventions, and since I wasn't able to make it to his memorial services in California, I dealt with my feelings by making this memorial tribute video. I was able to finish it quickly and get it to Patricia Tallman in time to run it after Rick's memorial service.
And a note to the rest of the B5 cast: I don't want to do another one of these anytime soon, so take care of yourselves!
I was hired by Joe Straczynski to create official Babylon 5 music videos for him to use at science fiction conventions, and later to promote the show to networks. We produced eight over the run of the series. Now, 10 years after the end of the series and numerous requests from fans, Straczynski has allowed me to post these online.

This is why the show is so superior, actors like Biggs and Katsulas. Honour them.

Also lots of other things. Like story telling, developed arcs, realistic everything...
"what are you?" "alive---everything else is negotiable" I remember thinking of this & crying

As a man who first saw this video in his 20's and is now nearing mid 30's I completely agree
Damn, I'm amazed at how many great actors from Babylon 5 passed. It truly does sadden me; it feels like only yesterday when I first saw and got hooked on B5.

I didn't get to see it when I was younger but watching it in undergrad left an impression. The speeches and behavior of the characters in B5 actually feel meaningful in a way that Picard's speeches did not. I am sad to see it gone (I even liked Crusade) as one of the few bastions of realistic characters facing realistic problems (leaving aside the gag-inducing Byron character) on TV. The professional man idea from early SF needs to come back, not just the audience surrogate or impassioned but vague appeals.

I am currently rewatching the whole series, it is very enjoyable, however, any time Michael O'Hare, Richard Biggs, Andreas Katsulas, Jerry Doyle, Mira Furlan, Steven Furst or Jeff Conaway are on screen, I am saddened a little because they left us all way too early.
I miss Richard, Mira, Andreas.. they are my childhood heroes. And they will never be forgotten!
Babylon 5 gets better with age because as time passes by we lose it's players but the show itself already had such a great ending for the last time we see most of our favorite characters.
We met Richard in 1995 in Chicago at a convention. Very nice guy. We were saddened by his death. RIP Dr. Franklin you have gone beyond the Rim.

@@erictaylor5462 Dont know all the details but i know i kept on hitting one Babylon 5 obituary after another ( btw well done fans, tbh i recon its not a bad fan tribute, it just shows the love and appreciation that people had for these actors but dang Babylon 5 main cast seems to have been well decimated)
You know, it just hit me. In a very special way, this series was a celebration of fathers. Almost every character talks about being shaped by their father; Sheridan, Franklin, Ivanova, Garibaldi, and even DeLenn. They all talk about their fathers and how they shaped their lives. It's something rather profound that modern series don't have anymore.

Fathers and fatherhood has been actively maligned and derided for decades. It's one of the things that makes watching old shows like B5 feel like they come from a foreign and unrecognizable country.
It is terrible how many of the cast members of B5 have passed away.
Dr. Franklin don't get the credit he deserves as a character. He is the most realistic representation of a human doctor in the future. he has his flaws, he fights his demons, but when it comes to his duty, he always was a doctor. Richard Briggs did justice to the character.
coming on 10 years since we lost you.. you Katsulas, Jeremy are still in our memory..burning bright.. :'(

When the music for Babylon 5 blowing up kicked in I got goosebumps. A very moving tribute.
Richard and Andreas were both such extraordinary actors. I am sad to say that I never had the pleasure of seeing them outside the B5 series. They will both be missed terribly. And I have to say that using the finale music from the final episode just made the video that much more poignant. Bless you both, as well as Jeff.
I shed a tear watching this. I want to do it all over again.
Rick was such a great actor, and he made our sci-fi con so much better by coming every year. He was also quite good as an auctioneer at our auction, very entertaining and naturally funny guy.
RIP Richard Biggs, you will be missed.

What a gift all these actors gave us with these amazing performances and incredible stories! RIP Richard, you a deeply missed! 💔

thanks for the memories , his character ( Steven Franklin ) teaches alot about ethics
I met him at a con he was really nice RIP
Life is so damn brief. I too have a picture of him laughing on stage with Jason Carter at Gencon. What a memory and what a moment in time. You are not forgotten. See you beyond the rim!
RIP Richard Biggs, Andreas Katsulas, and Jeff Conaway. Forever with the Stars
Richard Biggs was perhaps my favourite cast member. A really nice guy as well. I met him a few times at Babylon 5 conventions. He was pretty young when he passed as well in the spring of 2004. Rest in peace to this iconic actor on Babylon 5
RIP Richard Biggs thank you for the great Babylon 5 memories you left behind
He made a great contribution to the world.. in his craft.. I think he will be remembered.. and missed by some.. God Bless..
Rest in Peace, will never forget b5
A memorable man, in absence still bright.
Happy Birthday Richard.
LOVE HIM, MISS HIM, HONOR HIM, FOREVER. BEAUTIFUL GUY. LOVE STEPHEN FRANKLIN. MY HEART....
I started my yearly B5 Video Pilgrimage last week. I developed anew love to season 1. My favorite being TKO because of Susan coming to terms with her Fathers death. The Sitting Shiva is an awesome tradition and I wish us Gentiles would adopt something similar because it helps clear your mind and move forward. RIP Mr Biggs My favorite quote "and that;s when I killed him your honor!"

I started my yearly B5 at the start of covid. Decided to try season 1 again. I have a new better appreciation for season 1 now. Now that I am older.
Also in loving memory: Mira Furlan (1955-2021) -_-
Seems that Babylon 5 came out at the right time. Some of the most memorable and great actors in B5 died within years after B5 ended. Its almost like ending the series ended their lives due to them being so attached to it (I know this isnt the case but if u were superstitious it may appear that way) Im glad I was able to watch this when it was still on tv when it was on its first run.No matter how many times I watch it, it never gets old,I have all 5 seasons & i must of watched it like 100 times!
b5 is the best sifi and richard one of if not the best actor would of loved to meet him RIP

I own the series on DVD. I remember the episode when Mr. Biggs goes on walk about and gets stabbed in the abdomen and almost dies. Later, After learning he died from an abdominal aneurism. It is hard for me to watch that episode without crying, because to me that scene was almost prophetic. God Bless his family. He was a great actor.

I don't know how or why or when, but this video made it into my hands in 2004, burned out on a single CD, all the way across the world. Me and my friends sat down with our glasses, raising them once more for Richard Biggs, who we have lost way too soon. Finding it now on youtube, almost two decades later, still hits hard, especially now, as we have lost more and more people from this wonderful cast and crew. Me and my friends are no longer the fresh faced 20 years olds we were back then and as Ivanova said: "It seems like some days... there's no one left to play with. There's no joy anymore."
Was a diehard Babylon 5 fan back in the day and even had the privilege of meeting Richard. Brings a tear to my eye.
What is it in that 'Sleeping in Light' theme that always bring tears to my eyes?
Why does life take away the good people from us so quickly? I would of wrote sooner, but I needed time to think about it. RIP, Good Doctor, the world is a sadder place without you.
So many lost from this most memorable series, the best Sci-Fi ever produced: Richard Biggs (Dr. Stephen Franklin) 2004 Tim Choate (Zathras) 2004 Andreas Katsulas (G;Kar) 2006 Jeff Conaway (Zack Allen) 2011 Michael O'Hare (Commander Sinclair) 2012 Robin Sachs (Na'Tok) 2013 Jerry Doyle (Garibaldi) 2016 Stephen Furst (Vir Cotto) 2017 Thank you for the memories. “Babylon 5: Objects in Motion (#5.20)” (1998) “We are all the sum of our tears. Too little and the ground is not fertile, and nothing can grow there. Too much, the best of us is washed away. “ “I believe that when we leave a place, part of it goes with us and part of us remains. Go anywhere in the station when it is quiet, and just listen. After a while, you will hear the echoes of all our conversations, every thought and word we’ve exchanged. Long after we are gone, our voices will linger in these walls for as long as this place remains. But I will admit that the part of me that is going will very much miss the part of you that is staying.” “All my life I have been responsible only for myself. When I risked, I risked alone to avoid making others pay the price for my mistakes. They want me to show them another way. What if I show them the wrong way? What if they come to me not because of the lesson but because of the teacher? I worry, Ta’Lon, that my shadow may become greater than the message.” “But we can’t be free, until we learn to laugh at ourselves. Once you look in the mirror and see just how foolish we can be, laughter is inevitable. And from laughter comes wisdom.” ~G'Kar
sniff :( I never met him, but friends who did spoke very highly of him.
God rest your soul, Richard Biggs. The world is poorer for your passing.
Loved him as Marcus on Days of Our Lives.
I feel sad by the fact that i can't mourn Rick Biggs, or Andreas Katsulas. I can mourn the passing of my favorite characters from my favorite show. But as much as a fan as i am of Babylon 5, i never learned their real names, or watched their other work, or learned about them until they passed away. I have learned now not just to appreciate a good piece of fiction, but to also appreciate and learn more about the people behind it, before its to late.
Great actor and an inspiration to so many wanting to become doctors! A great tribute to a great man! Thanks for posting.
So many thanks for this great memorial.
I didn't even realise he passed away until I saw this, too many of the great cast members from B5 have passed away, so sad.
Rest easy dear friend... And ALL our lost friends who have travelled beyond the rim... Until we meet again in the place where no shadows fall... You are NOT forgotten!
Thank-you for posting this tribute, as you stated in your comments about Andreas; look after yourselves. Every momoent is gold.
We are so fortunate to have seen this show and endear the cast to our memories. We are also very fortunate to be able to show our children what we have seen and discuss how things were in our time. We can also tell them that they will see what changes them in a positive way as they reflect and pass on to their children and so on. See you beyond the rim
Thank you for posting this, that (and he) was truly great.
I had the privilege to meet Richard and his wife to be lori biggs. And chatted to them both for ages.a lovely person and great couple.you are missed

Slt... Merci....Cdt.
Thanks for making this.
Why would someone dislike this there no good reason to dislike. It Dishonoring the dead in my personally opinion.
what a stellar cast.
Like good wine, B5 gets better with age and Mr. Biggs was one of the reasons. This saddens me "more than tongue can tell".
Makes me cry. We all miss him us B5ers. I met him 5 times, class act, such a shock, and so danm sad. Will always love you Richard, and Andreas, and Jeff, forever in our hearts.
I am so sad that RB is dead:( he was so gentle and cool.. I hope god is with you Mr.Biggs... !!
B5 rules best show on Sci-fi Richard and Andreas R.I.P
I too first became aware of Richard Biggs by his work on Days. It was his joining babylon 5 that actually got me to start viewing the show on a regular basis. How very fortunate for me. How unfortunate on the other hand that he died so young. R.I.P.
I really loved Bigg's character, Stephen, well done Sir!
I can't believe we have lost 5 I think . It's now Oct 31 2018. What a great cast of people
Thanks for the moving tribute. It's hard to believe that it has been seven years since Biggs passed!
Dang - just saw this - really liked his character... good luck on your next journey Richard.

Rest in peace brother
Really really nice vid, poignant and well befitting the actor. Well done ZTeam.
I found this tonight - but it brings back such memories i met Richard in 2003 - in the August I think at a SFX show in London. He took my daughter in his arms telling her not to be scared by all the people in masks and suits. We chatted for a while and all the time he was saying how beautiful my daughter was. Richard was a true gentleman and I treasure my photos of him and my daughter. Long may you fly the stars Sir!
Holly shit how many b5 cast have we lost now? back to back watching the whole thing right now. epic storytelling.
You did good Rick. Thanks for everything.
I remember that B5 episode when he had to save the child, but religion got in the way. He was a great actor and a great show!
hes 'addict arc' was a god sent to me. I may not be a doctor. But its amazing how people who love to help others are sometimes addicts themselves. I took a walk about of sorts. And it just let me back to my same self. That story arc meant the world to me.
I'm totally agree with you Stevie, i met him during conventions and he was the real soul of the show : the human factor.
In memory of Richard Biggs, Andreas Katsulas, and Tim Chaote (Zathras). Like they said in "The Lost Tales", they're out there somewhere. Beyond the Rim...
What a shame, left us way too young
I had no idea he had passed. Some loser gets shot up in a drive by and we hear about it for years. One of my favorite actors on B5.
