Babylon 5: In Memory of Andreas Katsulas

Ойын-сауық

I was hired by Joe Straczynski to create official Babylon 5 music videos for him to use at science fiction conventions, and later to promote the show to networks. We produced eight over the run of the series. Now, 10 years after the end of the series and numerous requests from fans, Straczynski has allowed me to post these online.
In February 2006, we lost Andreas Katsulas to lung cancer. Unfortunately, it something many of us knew was coming, but it was still hard to accept and deal with it actually happening. I never hung out with Andreas like I did with Richard Biggs, but he told me once how much he liked and appreciated the work I did on the official B5 music videos - that meant a lot to me. So even though I hate the circumstances under which I came up with this, I did a tribute video for Andreas as well, to honor him and his performances in my own way. I've been told the video for Rick touched a lot of people, including his family - I hope this one can do the same for Andreas' family and fans.
This is the extended version that I did for Andreas' widow after the original cut was released on the net. She contacted me and asked for a copy to run at his memorial service. However, she was disappointed I had not used her favorite G'Kar quote - so I quickly edited that in as a new introduction. It's never been seen online until now.
And a repeat of my earlier note to the rest of the B5 cast: I don't want to do another one of these anytime soon, so take care of yourselves, please!

Perfect acting, perfect character arc, I mean I I’m 53 and cried my eyes out when he said to Londo, “I can never forgive your people for what they did to us........but I can forgive you.” And then they embrace. Wow! A poet, an actor, and legend. Enjoy life beyond the rim, or into west!

Andreas being cast as G'Kar was one of those rare moments when the actor and character came together as if by destiny. Babylon 5 just wouldn't be the epic series that it is without G'Kar, and G'Kar wouldn't have been the epic character he is without Andreas. It worked so perfectly.

B5 was a sci-fi series only in name. In fact it was all about humans: their unanswered questions, their insecurities, their fears, their ambitions, their power struggles, their plots, their shattered dreams, and at the same time it was about their dreams, their intelligence, their courage, their perseverance, their friendships, their loyalty, their need to love and to be loved, their need to belong and to believe, in a nutshell it was all about their glorious and wretched nature. A unique philosophical treaty placed in outer space. There never has been such a sci-fi series before and there never will be another like it.

+alice mi I would like to give this post more likes, but since that is not possible, I LIKE THIS POST (x 1.000)! You got it, Alice, B5 was indeed a hidden jewel of human study, but then again, so is Joe Michael Straczynski. As the man himself has said: "B5 is Sci-fi's best kept secret." and that is a great shame, it should be public knowledge to everyone with an interest in John Lennon's idea of Humanity.

Indeed on JMS...I mean, look at some of the stories he brings to 'kids programming', and even to a show that *was* expressly meant to sell toys. (Specifically, Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future for the latter, and Real Ghostbusters for the former. It always amuses me to think about the time I was looking at a list of my favorite RG eps...and every. single. one. turned out to be a JMS ep.)

VulpisFoxfire I cannot disagree with you, being a fan of jms since I stumbled on to Babylon 5. I used to be a hard core Trekkie, until I saw B5 and my eyes opened. Being a gamesmaster of RPG's, I was looking for a story for my Star Trek campaign and stumbled on to "A Voice in the Wilderness." I never looked back. To my chagrin and sorrow, B5 seems to be one of Sci-Fi's best kept secrets. I have been collecting anything I can find with Joe's name on it, books comics, even action figures...Everytime my writing of episodes for my RPG's hits a snag, I get out mu trading card with his picture on it and bang, the creative juices start flowing again. This man deserves much more recognition.

So many lost from this most memorable series, the best Sci-Fi ever produced: Richard Biggs (Dr. Stephen Franklin) 2004 Tim Choate (Zathras) 2004 Andreas Katsulas (G;Kar) 2006 Jeff Conaway (Zack Allen) 2011 Michael O'Hare (Commander Sinclair) 2012 Robin Sachs (Na'Tok) 2013 Jerry Doyle (Garibaldi) 2016 Stephen Furst (Vir Cotto) 2017 Thank you for the memories. “Babylon 5: Objects in Motion (#5.20)” (1998) “We are all the sum of our tears. Too little and the ground is not fertile, and nothing can grow there. Too much, the best of us is washed away. “ “I believe that when we leave a place, part of it goes with us and part of us remains. Go anywhere in the station when it is quiet, and just listen. After a while, you will hear the echoes of all our conversations, every thought and word we’ve exchanged. Long after we are gone, our voices will linger in these walls for as long as this place remains. But I will admit that the part of me that is going will very much miss the part of you that is staying.” “All my life I have been responsible only for myself. When I risked, I risked alone to avoid making others pay the price for my mistakes. They want me to show them another way. What if I show them the wrong way? What if they come to me not because of the lesson but because of the teacher? I worry, Ta’Lon, that my shadow may become greater than the message.” “But we can’t be free, until we learn to laugh at ourselves. Once you look in the mirror and see just how foolish we can be, laughter is inevitable. And from laughter comes wisdom.” ~G'Kar

Every time I think of G'Kar, I think of how amazing the actor Andreas Katsulas' acting was, how lucky we all were to see him in that role. He added realism and emotion to an already amazing show, making B5 the best sci fi that I think will ever be produced. They just do not make them like this anymore, and I doubt they ever will. Some of the dialogs between G'kar and londo are amazingly well acted and produced. Sci fi at it's very best, makes me happy every time I watch it.

It's being re-aired in the UK on a fairly regular basis thankfully. It was recently on Watch and I got up at 7 every morning just to watch it again. Also the box sets on DVD are quite easy to get hold of and surprisingly cheaply. I have them all now including Crusade. B5 is THE greatest single sci-fi show ever made imo and that comes from a lifelong Star Trek fan who until B5 came along didn't admit the existence of any show that didn't have the words Star Trek or Dr Who in its title.

My older sister was at the epic Babylon 5 convention in Blackpool between seasons 4 and 5. She said Londo came out, stood on the stage, then started to sing 🎵 “Just me and my shaaaaadows!” 🎵 which had the audience all but crying with laughter. Several minutes into his bit, G’kar comes out. Carrying a stepladder. He sets the stepladder up as Londo stares at him in silence. He climbs three steps. He looks at Londo. Londo looks at G’kar. He looks at the audience. “I do not want to be on the same level as him!” Best. Convention. Ever.

I keep coming back to this video far too many times...I get sad each time. As a kid born in the early 80s....and growing up in what I lovingly call the "Golden Age of Amazing Sci-Fi"...I was able to watch all the Star Trek shows and Babylon 5. B5...is the one I remember the most, and the one I KEEP going back to. Everything about it was amazing...and G'Kar was one of my favorites. As a kid.....I didn't realize why I liked him so much. But, as a grown man...I realized I liked him because he was the definition of the "Warrior Poet". The philosopher that was forced into a life of war. I thank JMS for this show...and desperately hope that the new B5 doesn't die in the planning stages....we all yearn for more B5.

I enjoyed watching Andreas Katsulas on Star Trek The Next Generation, and Star Trek Enterprise; however, I loved his portrayal of G'kar. I think that G'kar had the best story arch out of the entire characters on Babylon 5. We see him go from a man bent on revenge for the way his people were treated by the Centauri, to become the philosophical/moral center of the characters. He was hell-bent on hurting the Centauri when the chance appeared to become a man that would be willing to sacrifice his life to save the people around him. In many ways, I am a lot like G'kar I was hell-bent on hurting the people that have hurt me; however, I am done with that, I am trying to be more like what G'kar became.

It's March 31, 2020 and the world is slowly circling the drain from an unseen enemy. I find myself reliving great memories from my favorite sci-fi shows on KZread. B5 was definitely in that category. To Z Team Productions, nicely done. The clip of G'Kar's speech at the end of Season 3, episode 22 resonates with me right now on a worldly scale. "No one knows the shape of that future or where it will take us. We know only that it is always born in pain." Be safe everybody.
