Babylon 5 is still one of the best sifi series. Greatly under rated.
I just watched the first 4 seasons and I have determined it is the BEST sci-fi show ever made. This move looks like it would have been very good. It would have used a lot of the plot devices from the whole series to accomplish its end.

Close second to B5 is Farscape for me. It's completely different but unique nonetheless.

After watching our DVDs several times, we now have the re-mastered Blu-ray box set and the quality is excellent.
From my understanding, this was the secondary B5 movie proposal. Originally, JMS promised he could deliver a damn fine B5 movie for $35 million and the focus, which he had so carefully carved out, was to be the Telepath War. B5 ends with that war looming in the future and Crusade picks up in the aftermath. We did get a look at the destruction of Psi Corps in Crusade but originally it was intended that Lyta was herself a human bomb and the war ended when she detonated herself fighting alongside Lennier. In Crusade, it was inexplicably changed to a random telepath prisoner who was wired to blow herself up. Then again, the “Telepath War” might not have referred to the Internal struggle and Lyta’s final act of destruction but rather to Bester’s attack on Earth after coming out of hiding in 2267 in the unfilmed script Value Judgments. Either way, we got screwed.

According to my source, The Telepath War was indeed the first movie concept. Another movie idea followed, just called B5: The Motion Picture, but wasn't as fully formed. The third, and the one that got the farthest into production, was this one. I might do a video about the earlier attempts in the future.

@@CaptRobau I have to admit, I wasn’t particularly enthused about The Memory of Shadows. It just seemed like the train had left the station, cast members were dropping like flies and we weren’t getting the canonical story we were promised. And despite there being “a door in London with Babylon 5 on it” most of us were skeptical it would ever get made. Fast forward 20 years to JMS: Babylon 5 is coming back on the CW! We must love the abuse.

@sdfried So much the better. That opened the door for alternatives to Lyta's impending fate. But then again, it would not have made any sense for a telepath so incredibly powerful as her, a walking nuke, to somehow end up in a position as bizarre as a prison cell. I would have loved to see how Vir and his resistance drove the Drakh from Centauri Prime, even if they blew up everything they left behind. Unfortunately, Stephen Furst (Vir) and Andreas Katsulas (G'Kar) are no longer with us. Way too many from B5's top shelf have died young.
I feel like the show is so character focused and driven ... that having the story revolving around a totally new charactere, with all our favorites that we are so attached to, relegated to background support roles ... I don't know ... it would have been COOL to see a B5 movie sure ... but I don't know how much it would have felt "right" to the fans.

Yeah, it still sounds like another TV movie. Doesn't seem to have had either the scope to be largely cinematic or more deeply personal for our core characters to be resonant enough for a big screen adventure.

yes and no. B5 was written as 5 seasons from start so you dont get some weird shit start happening out of the blue. of course actors are really great but its not just about actors.
Wow, I'm a big fan and never heard any of the details about this before. Thank you! Honestly, the plot reminds me of most of the TV movies they did with TNT --- underwhelming. But would have liked to have seen it happen. Optimistic about the reboot series -- I hope it does happen, but only if it's close to the quality of the writing of the original series.
At the beginning of each episode, you saw a ship load of people coming aboard B5. I always hoped to see Duncan MacLeod among the group of travelers.
Any project with Gillian Anderson is worth seeing!
Thanks for gathering this information together, and to you, Rich and Tom for the effort to put it together for us to see.
If only it could have been made. B5 was not just the best Sci-Fi series ever for its story lines, but the choice of actors and the characters that they played was superb. Warner brothers tried inserting their own choices (like Keffler) before and JMS wisely side lined them. Gillian Anderson would be a brilliant addition- I've seen her in several tv dramas and in live stage performances. Peter Woodward was a great character (Galen) in Crusade, as was his father, Edward. It was a real shame that series was cancelled. Without the sadly lost cast who made B5 what it was, it would be almost impossible to make the move now.
Even though, as you claim, this was the last major attempt to keep B5 going, I'm happy we at least got the "babylon 5: The Lost Tales" in 2007. While it was not great, it was nice to see some of the characters and visit the B5 universe once more. The Lost Tales 2 was never made, which JMS announced in 2008, since the studio was not willing to increase the budget and he did not want to "dilute" the B5 legacy with sub-par stories. I respect that artistical decision to not want to drag B5 down, but keep the good memories of the show alive. I had never heard of this story before, but it does sound interesting. Going after destroying shadow technology, while some forces on Earth still trying to aquire such technology. Would have made for a good movie or even series. Follwing up on the aftermath of one of the biggest events in the known universe history.
Thanks for this! Really interesting and I like the way you put it together visually, using Tom's treatments too. For myself as a recent B5 fan and a long-time X-Files fan, your imagining of how this film might have looked is really fun to think about. Looking forward also to the B5 reboot. I'm excited!

Perfect for this role would have been Gillian Anderson, as she has experience playing an FBI agent. She could have put that experience to good use playing an agent of Earth Force Intelligence.
Sounds intriguing, with elements of the Techno-mage trilogy of books. In those it's revealed that the Techno-mages use shadow-tech....
Every now and then I've thought about a Star Trek and X-Files crossover. Mulder and Scully disappear without a trace during an investigation and end up through an invisible rift in time in the 24th century, ending up on either Earth or the Enterprise D. Based on their skills, they decide to work for Starfleet Intelligence. Still, both have to go through Starfleet Academy. Which is much more difficult for Scully because she practically has to go back to medical school at Starfleet Medical Academy and also has to learn the anatomy of one of the main races of the Federation. It's also understandable, she has a lot of catching up to do on how to treat diseases, what medications there are and how to use the laser scalpel and the medical tricorder. But what both of them need to get used to is that there are so many humanoid extraterrestrials because they were only used to the extraterrestrials from the X-Files.

@@SiXiam Visitors Down the Street. I didn’t take it as dumb so much as Crusade was going to be more of a playground for writers doing new things even if it’s ridiculous and super weird. Probably would’ve been more Outer Limits premise based standalone stuff like Now for Word and Deconstruction of Falling Stars etc… I think JMS said Crusade was going to be about drama arcs first and the world arcs would be serving that end instead of the reverse like in B5…Im assuming that would mean more room for stuff like A View from the Gallery… The little bit we got maybe was corny and bizarre due to sabotage but it definitely wasn’t what the other shows were doing, whatever it was!

it was recently told that an executive at WB cancelled any B5 series or films because he did not like B5. he is not there now and B5 the road home has been made and there are reboots happening.
Sounds cool, I need more Babylon 5.
I imagine a movie would have gotten similar audience numbers as something like Serenity (of the Firefly series) or even that X-Files movie. Probably not a big enough fanbase unfortunately.
Thank you for doing this! Had the film been made with the original cast reprising their roles, I think it would have been good. That said, I have concerns about shoehorning Sheridan, Delenn, Londo, and G'Kar into the movie seeming just so they could be there, and not because there was a substantial purpose for them. Or so it seems from the synopses I've read.
@dennismoon6693
3 ай бұрын
I think that given their roles, it would have been plausible for Sheridan and Delenn to be involved, at least given the premise of them coming to aid in negotiations. G'kar and Londo, not so much. At this point, G'kar was off exploring the galaxy; even setting aside the fact that he had effectively severed all ties with being a representative of Narn, how would they have gotten in touch with him? Considering the recent conduct of the Centauri Republic, how eager would the other races have been to include them as part of the negotiations? Although being compromised by Shadow tech himself might have made for some interesting developments as that aspect of the plot developed.
I almost didn't click because I was afraid you were going to tell me about some B5/X Files crossover project. Though I guess it could make more sense than when someone decided to do a Sleepy Hollow/Bones crossover .
1. The story of this "detective story in space" movie would have been uninteresting after the "intergalactic war through time and space" story of Babylon 5. Only a Babylon 4 story (in a series format) with Valen and the first Shadow War could have been as successful as B5 (and only if JMS again takes his time to write the outline properly for the entire series before shooting anything, just like he did with B5). 2. There's not enough time to get emotionally as close to the main characters as we had during B5 3. With so many B5 characters back it would have been next to impossible to actually care for Diane or anyone else new. Less is more (remember the reaction to Luke Skywalker's - and only his - return scene in the Mandalorian). JMS should have asked himself "what actually made B5 so successful?" and replicate that success based on the answer. My guess (as someone who LOVED Babylon 5 as a kid) is the vast universe of the story, the well placed and planned mysteries that eventually get explained in ways we didn't imagine, the overall story inspired by real historical events and the endless wisdom which a lot of characters possess.
i really hope the green screen footage from the movies and series somehow come out i feel like the fanbase can come together and remaster the fuck out of everythingi would die to recolor grade and key those
Glad we have whatever this completed project he is talking about. I wonder if its this film or a version of it?
Babylon 5 is even more relevant today.
Tom Cruise as Sheridan Catherine Zeta-Jones as Ivanova, Salma Hayek as Delenn, Martin Lawrence as Dr. Stephen Franklin, and Mark Wahlberg as Gkar. What could go wrong?

WOW!
I don't have a lot of hope for any kind of revival for this series since at least over half the original cast has passed.
The plot sounds like a Crusade made for TV movie, more than a theatrical B5 movie. I'm a huge B5 fan, and as much as I would loved to have seen a theatrical release, I can't get passed the fact that the essential elements of a B5 movie should be based around B5 itself, and I can't see how this would have had enough scale to pull in enough of a new audience to make it financially viable in the cinema. If B5 is the title, you can't just use it as an interesting place to visit for a few scenes. and that's the problem. B5 is either the focus, but there not enough scale, or B5 is somewhere to visit, so it's not really a B5 movie at all. Of course JMS is an awesome writer so he may have pulled it off...

I would assume that one of the four warring races was the one selling shadow tech, or that all sides had bought some and thus it threatened to become a bad case of 'war in heaven in miniature' thus tying the two parts of the plot together properly with a shared thematic element.

I think an interesting story would be whatever happened to G'Kar and Lyta Alexander. Did she keep her promise to remove the block that prevented him harming Mr. Bester? Because he totally disserved that bit of revenge. I hope he ended somewhat like Lord Refa ended. The rock cried out, "No hiding place down here"
@lucasbachmann

Per the Telepath Trilogy novel Bester died of old age in a prison cell on the same day Sheridan was announced to have disappeared and was believed dead. (as I recall). Bester was also going to be in a Crusade episode that Walter Koenig was even paid for where the Excalibur accidentally crosses paths with him on the the run. Garibaldi did bankroll a lot of the telepath war rebellion.
@scottperry7311

It was not G'Kar, it was Garibaldi who had the block that prevented him from harming Mr. Bester. There is a resolution to this plot line, it was in the novelizations of Babylon 5 produced after the series ended, which was done in a trilogy on the Earth Telepaths that goes heavily into Besters life and how his story goes with Garibaldi. There are also trilogies on the Centari, with Mollari and Vir under the Drake, and the Techno Mages with Galen being the main character. I highly recommend these books, they are very good, especially if you are a fan of Babylon 5, then they are great. The best trilogy in my opinion is the one about Galen, there is some really cool stuff in those books and I think is incredible good and ingenious.

Considering some of the plot threads and themes in the original and our current political environment, on the one hand the show does have some messages that need to be heard, but on the other, I have to wonder if it will be able to survive the backlash from people who are way too easily offended.

I think it would have been better if the series had ended gracefully once the core narrative was completed. Dragging it through the muck with a bolt-on season of uninspired mediocrity just tarnished everything.
Babylon 5 is the best space opera in the history of science fiction.
Sounds like it'd have been great, but probably a commercial failure as it'd be a movie you'd need to see 5 seasons of TV to understand.
I have to come down on the side of Warner Bros here; I'm a huge B5 fanatic, but only because of the writing. The cast has always been atrocious; not a single one of them approaches the emotional range of Kristen Stewart, the convincing delivery of Carrot Top, or the confident, disarmingly natural demeanor of Hayden Christensen. With Crusader we knew everything, it was "Lost in space" done in a boring and lazy manner by lazy studio execs and writers with either little input or little imagination, trying desperately to replace a great story that brought them tons of money. There's a reason why Crusade and Legend of the Rangers were cancelled - they SUCKED. Just like most of the TV movies. B5 was lightening in a bottle. After season 4, JMS was burnt out and it showed. His next attempt, in which he had full creative control, Lost Tails in 2007, was also awful. JMS blamed the budget and weak DVD sales but the writing was just bad. So even if this movie has gone into production, it would most likely have been mediocre at best.
i belive babylon 5 needs a remake with updated visuals.. but not now because of the whole woke stuff and other things. they are not capable of creating a good series let alone a good remake!
crusade sucked. LOTR SUCKED.

I'm sure you mean ROP and not LOTR.
