Honestly, the only thing that takes away from the reality of the puppets is how King Kong’s fur randomly changes its shape between frames. It’s like you can tell what the animators touched even when the appendages haven’t changed in some frames.

Honestly? This doesn't sound objectively better than the Episode 1 we got. George Lucas largely made the right call in altering most ideas on this script. His credit is long past overdue. Obi-Wan in the final script is pretty much irrelevant as an individual outside the final duel. Obi-Wan's characterization is also generally unlikable in the final film as he calls Anakin a dumbass after he saved everyone by winning the race for no reason. He basically only respects those with authority over him like the Queen, his master, and the council. Those with no authority over him get disrespected like Anakin and Jar Jar. While I'm unhappy with Obi-Wan in episode 1 I don't think this prototype script does him justice just because he got the protagonist role that Qui-Gon did. *Really the only reason to list this as a positive for Obi-Wan is because people wanted him as the lead over Qui-Gon because the former was a beloved preestablished character.* We know Obi-Wan as a noble and honorable knight that was trusted by Yoda in the OT so having him be written with Qui-Gon's occasionally amoral rule bending defiance wouldn't make sense. The Queen doesn't want to trust Qui-Gon. The council doesn't trust Qui-Gon before or even after he dies because they begin to think the prophecy was misread in Episode 3. Point is Qui-Gon's traits would fundamentally clash with how we know Obi-Wan from the OT. Qui-Gon isn't young, arrogant, or impatient as Obi-Wan says he was in episode 5. Anakin is still a child at 12 years old so idk why you claimed he wasn't at the end. Anakin and Padme aren't even weird in the final script for episode 1 because there is no mutual romantic tension between them. The age gap isn't a problem because nothing happened beyond Padme being the only person to comfort Anakin after separating from his mother. The romance story doesn't occur until episode 2. I'd argue Anakin being younger in the final script makes him inherently more vulnerable to the wound caused by the separation of his mother, yknow, the start of his important character flaw of not being able to let go? Giving the leading role to Qui-Gon was the smart choice as his death in the original script carries less impact thanks to his characterization not being a bigger focus. His complete absence from the first act also harms this. Qui-Gon in the final script is an unorthodox Jedi while we've always known Obi-Wan to be a conventional paragon. Having a paragon commit somewhat amoral acts that Qui-Gon does in the film would clash, naturally I'm glad those cool traits were given to another character. You can also debate how it would be boring if the strong and wise Kenobi from the OT just... already started strong and wise in Episode 1 but that's an opinion. Here is something mind-blowing, Maul doesn't magically improve just by having more dialogue and screentime. His role, actions, and beliefs are the exact same in the final film because he was always just a tool/extension for his master. This different understanding of Maul in the beta script fundamentally changes nothing in the story. The Maul we got in the film was straightforward and effective, an ever-glaring monster to be afraid/wary of. The more you know about a monster, the less you'll fear it. Maul is nowhere near as scary in TCW as he was in Episode 1 because of all the juicy layers that were added to him after resurrection. There is a time for layered villains like Dooku and there is a time for simple pure evil like Maul. You can argue that one of his prototype designs were more scary than the final design, but the final design mixes in more badass elements that effectively communicate what the character is meant to be. I argue George made the right choice in trimming the fat here with Maul unlike his choice to delete several scenes that expanded Dooku's characterization and role among the Separatists in Episode 2. If I wanted to be REALLY petty I can dismiss prototype Maul for lacking the double bladed saber *alone* but I am trying to be sincere lol. The absence of midichlorians is also not a benefit lol. They don't harm anything and are elaborated on in a meaningful way for Revenge of the Sith with Darth Plagueis. I'll be fair and address the positives the prototype has over the final script. The aliens (Gungans) speaking normally is boring but Jar Jar being less over the top would be welcome. Perhaps it would offer a less effective foil to the Jedi in theory if he's just a normal innocent but I'll entertain that idea since Jar Jar is very excessive in the final story. Seeing Chancellor Valorum outside the senate interacting with Palpatine could expand upon his charming manipulative tactics in a small was even if its not the focus of that scene. Valorum is the person who sends the Jedi to investigate in the first place so elaborating on his agency would benefit the story in a small but substantial way. Overall? The final script was largely better than this prototype script. George Lucas mostly knew what he was doing and made the right call. The Phantom Menace was a decent 6/10 or 7/10 film. We got the superior version of the story realized even if Obi-Wan was largely lame and less prominent outside of the final duel. Setting up Qui-Gon as the affably amoral wise decoy mentor-protagonist who tragically dies before training Anakin was a good choice.

I think Qui-Gonn is actually an improvement in the version we actually got. It makes you care more about Qui-Gonn getting killed (as opposed to someone who just appeared), and we get to know him better. Perhaps Obi-Wan could've been older, like here, still and so would Anakin, but having Qui-Gonn there from the start not only develops both Jedi better, but also lets us bounce more dialogue between them to learn more about the world in a natural way.

I agree, Qui-Gon in the final film is my favorite new character we got from the prequels. Having two Jedi at the start enhances the dialogue opportunity and characterization. Qui-Gon was an unorthodox Jedi and he's introduced with Obi-Wan by having him give advice that potentially conflicts with advice from Yoda. This subtly sets up how Qui-Gon bends the rules throughout the film like when he mind tricks the Gungan King, attempts to train Anakin without the council's permission, rigs the bet, and doesn't inform the queen of his risky plan to get off Tattooine. This nice character introduction would be lost without two Jedi in the opening. The Phantom Menace was honestly such a good film to begin with so I don't miss some of these script changes.

whats the fascination with more fps to make it more smooth. movies are 24-30fps and are smooth as glass because they incorporate a little recepie in each of the frames our brains have evolved to detect as literal motion called motion blur. with motion blur you can animate at any speed and make it super smooth, non-competitive gamers seek more fps but all they want is smoother graphics between frames which makes it impossible to distinguish individual frames at 24fps let alone 100-140fps. what you should do is import simpsons into a motion blur generator, which effectively what tv manufactures have been working on to make movies even smoother

I met Anne during the last time she attended Dragon*Con. I'm glad he held true to Anne's work - I feel he failed to do so with Battlestar. He changed the primary plot point in Battlestar that, in the original series, the Cylons were built/descended from an alien race and they were reacting/over-reacting to contact with humans. I lost interest when it was a rehash of Frankenstein.

On god LMAO. People really just hate Qui-Gon because he's not Obi-Wan/ he "stole" his screentime. They don't even bother to pay attention to how unorthodox or cool Qui-Gon is and write him off as a boring character. Basically its people refusing to engage with the story on its own terms because its not how they envisioned Star Wars.

Obi wan being more like Qui Gon’s character from the start would have been interesting, him being in his 30s in episode 1 would fit with being in his 60s in episode 4. The dynamic would be much more father and son rather than older and younger brother, and this would completely change how he develops/matures throughout the prequels. This probably would have made his arc of becoming Vader one less of being vulnerable to impulsivity/ emotional manipulation by palpatine and more “rational” like how Count Dooku fell to the dark side.

Qui Gon is my favorite Jedi, so for him to have a smaller role would make the film less interesting. The Phantom Menace is my favorite Star Wars movie so to make most of these changes while fun to imagine would take away the enjoyment I already have with this movie. I've been addicted to Star Wars for 41 years and have enjoyed all of it. From the OT to the EU, PT, ST, doesn't matter to me. Because each piece we get is a glimpse into a universe I can immerse myself into. I don't like it all equally, but, I take the thing I like least about Star Wars over the best any other imagined universe has to offer.

Still prequel hate? After the sequel debacle? George Lucas can fart into a movie screen it’s still a million times better than any shit show Disney can come up with. This idiotic nitpicking of the prequels and treating Lucas like shit is what got us the shit show that is Disney Star Wars. Prequel haters deserve everything they get from Disney.
