Great info here, as always Daniel. As I watch more of your videos I can see how the library is the vehicle and palette, but your instincts and ears are really what shines during these sessions. Thanks for taking the time do do this... the info shared and techniques presented are invaluable and inspiring!

What he said about the syths is true to its core that why ten years ago when I had the chance to buy all those walls to wall mods. Did I tell myself why? So I am happy that he confirms what I was thinking years ago.

Per the modular discussion: I would love an in-the-box solution for a live-gig pedalboard that had something like a M1 mac mini, a 13"or so screen, or ipad touch screen interface (or a comparable Windows touch screen solution), and maybe a Behringer FCB1010 foot controller. The beauty and mayhem a talented, skilled guitarist or singer could create live with practically limitless instances of e.g.: LiquidSonics Seventh Heaven reverb, Audiothing Wire delay, Antares Harmony Engine, Krotos Dehumanizer, etc. would be beyond anything ever done before. And beyond that, the actual Behringer FCB1010 is somewhat unreliable, but very cheap. It would be the perfect starting point for taking in-the-box out of the box in a studio or on a live stream, and there's enough high quality free or practically free VST effects out there to put most pedalboards to shame. The value of modular is in the kind of music someonr like Hainbach successfully makes, where the process is supposed to be slow and meditative, and where out of that slow process, music ends up being made incredibly fast, because he puts in tons of preparation and deliberation, so that he can be completely in flow for the recording process

I've been visiting music forums for 15 years and every single time someone came with some stuff created with modular synth it was just a fucking clown fiesta with bleeps and bubble sounds. At the same time those were shitting on kids who would come to ask how to recreate the sound from some track and they would be replying by default:"I don't want to listen, but I'm 100% sure that you are seeking for supersaw", acting how their bleeps and bubbles are move valuable than everything else.

Do you use foot pedals when you play the keys, Daniel? It's hard to know if sustain is from holding down keys vs foot pedal sustain, or if the library mechanics just trails/tails every note. Those ambient pads are quite nice.

Thought about picking up Albion Neo on sale, been eyeing it a long while (my favorite Albion sounds) but I think I’m going to pick this one up instead. I don’t do orchestral music, I’m a pop/alternative writer that just likes using “cinematic” sounds. This one is my vibe, the kind of stuff I already like to sprinkle in. Also, 60gbs of orchestral stuff I don’t use every project probably isn’t the most efficient use of storage haha. Really enjoyed watching you with it

Press sustain pedal on a patch, move to another track and it keeps the last sound sustaining. Kind of like a bug, he uses to have a constant drone playing. When you select that track again it would then stop.

I notice on some instances of Kontakt you have like 2-3 patches in it playing at the same time. If I’m wanted to modulated the volume on one, would it be possible or will all of the volumes change with it? I know you can change the volume directly on the patch itself but changing dynamics I feel I haven’t figured out

I find myself agreeing and disagreeing on hardware and modular. I've gone through some synths in the last few years and sold some I've loved because I became aware I could do the same in software, much easier - just as you say! I also agree about huge modular rigs. A lot of modular folk have said they never finish a track, they just love making sounds... and nothing wrong with that! But I like finishing tracks, so in the end I settled on a small rig of just 4 hardware units - Analog RYTM mkII, Moog Mother 32, Subharmonicon and Matriarch. I love this setup for exactly the opposite of the reason you give. I can switch it on and create much quicker and easier than I can on a computer. I can (for example) record a sequence, randomise it, set up round robins on the oscillators so that each note has a slightly different timbre, patch in an analog delay, affect the note velocity with an LFO modulated by a polyrhythmic sequencer.... all in the time it takes for Cubase to load. Doing the same in software would take an age and lack the intuitive workflow and organic feel that the analog provides. (I think software could emulate the Matriarch, but so far nothing has been programmed that does - and it sounds fucking gorgeous!). The RYTM, with it's touch sensitive pads and probability sequencing is a league above anything in software. With hardware - you can try it out, take it back, you can sell it later, it's more inspiring to use. All in all if I could only keep either software or hardware, it would be software every time... but if you research what you buy and how that will help the sort of music you want to make, hardware can easily do things that software struggles with. And to me, as long as that is the focus of hardware, rather than just having something with knobs to turn, it can greatly enhance workflow and add another set of colours to the palette!

Hello Daniel, great review! I’m only wondering why you’re always reverting to CineBrass (packages) as opposed to Junkie XL Brass, as I recall you declared that library as the best brass library (with great dynamics and “balls”). However, I noticed in the previous video as well, you used CineBrass again. Is it because it’s not on Kontakt but rather Sine? And if so, what is the disadvantage that holds you back from using Junkie XL Brass or Sine? Thanks so much - would really appreciate a reply and I value your opinion and insight (before any commitment to either library on my side).

I tend to write with Kontakt libraries as its just quicker to the way things are set up. Then when I want to make things sound better (or just doing a general production quality pass) I will bring in the libraries I like for tone like JXL. TBH I need to re-set up my empty template once I am not on a project! I try to change or update very little when I am working on stuff.

@@DJLA Super appreciate the time to personally reply to my question! Makes sense, setting up huge templates are not exactly fun - it's mind numbing. OK, so it's more of a template set-up or workflow (that you have set with Kontakt). Nothing against SINE or the sound of the library itself as you mentioned you might use it to "sound better". My first time considering SINE and wanted to make sure it's OK to take the plunge (I do remember in your video there was a bit of an issue with SINE's store/access to internet the middle of a library which is annoying - but the mic bounce/combination is a great idea). Anyways, they are expensive and wanted to make sure you recommend it - I never comment or text in chats while you're working just for the sake of saying something unless it's something I can't figure out and I do value your opinion (great ear and I tend to agree with the details and feedback you have based on my experience too so it's made me follow your opinion on things I have *not* tried). Thank you ever so much.

Really good A'vin a Look. i think you have been harsh at times about Spitfire. They are a great British company making great products. But I also admire your honesty at sticking your neck out and trying to give your honest critical opinion. I think they key is to stick to the honest agenda of trying to improve Sample library developers and the innovation of their products. Which you are trying to do in your videos. I enjoy your music and your video output and Sample developer's should listen to your comments as you are working with these libraries, Day in and Day out and you bring a professional voice to the table. Keep up the drive for innovation. It will only make the Virtual instrument industry a more vibrant and rewarding space. Cheers.

It's true, we are the one percent who would ever notice, and when we do it's like, really? Didn't even bother to add in a new melodic line over it? But I agree with you, Nadav. I think 99% of people watching content with dramatic scores don't even notice they're there, because for them it just disappears and becomes part of the visual experience, yada yada. Using these libraries as starting points is an amazing leap toward getting into the mood for what you are trying to capture. There are so many creative paths and techniques, unique to each composer - I'm not terribly concerned.

Even so, context is everything. As long as your cue isn't literally just the naked patch, you should be okay. The Armageddon Ensemble from Damage is very recognizable and has probably been used in more cues than any other perc patch.

I constantly recognize Omnisphere patches, Serum presets, Output Exhale and Arcade samples (literally whole phrases) in popular music all the time. We are indeed the one percent who notices, no one else cares at all haha. The only concern would be one particular sound becoming over-saturated and then pigeonholing your music but we have SO many tools now it’s not likely. Like, how long do we have to have trap hihats in every pop song? Been going on forever it seems

I totally agree with your views on modular... I've yet to hear anything from modular gear that I can't create with u-he's Zebra or Diva. At this point in time, modular just seems like a very complicated way of creating tones we can make in many other ways. I also cringe at how many videos I see of people with tens of thousands worth of modular gear and next to zero skills as a composer or musician.

Agree with DJ that space/portability isn't on rack gears side. Like anything, if you are asking about price... it's out of your range.

Daniel is spot on.I have seen people who have spent huge amounts of money one modular synths, Moog ones, etc, and have virtually zero musical ability. Not a criticism, just an observation. its their money. There are also people who own the same equipment, and they are the exact juxtaposition, very musically talented. Just my opinion, its a waste of time and money. Its makes no difference to the listener.

Re, modular. Couldn't agree more. Christ! What a joke - and it's a procrastinators dream. Users are more likely to die of old age before they produce a working composition & mainly because they'll be spending an epoch constantly buying and selling units in search of that perfect patch that they could've knocked up in Massive X in say, less time than it takes a DFAM to warm up. And what's all this current trend of 'going dawless'??? I've actually spent most of last year going gearless. I'm more in the box than Tutankhamun. So much exciting software always being released - what's not to love? Hardware certainly does have it's place - in a skip. (great review of CDT btw) P.s Been in touch with Faderfox with a view to them making a multi-knob midi controller with individual OLEDs - now that would be useful.
