i am 78 and been into music since age 6 and have heard the best of the best across all genres from jazz to blues to pop to gospel to opera to country to you name it. has never been anyone like Aurora. She can evoke emotions from a rock. wrote Lucky at age 9, Murder Song at 11 and Runaway at 11 and the messages are powerful because she is so powerful in her beliefs and her desire to make us all better as people and to make certain the planet surives. She is haunting mesmerizing angelic and so so gifted--- writer singer-- arranger-- composer-- choreographer and for me, a Messaanger from someplace I know not where. Noone like her. Never has been. What a GIFT for Mankind.

She is using a very old vocal tradition called "kulning". Locally we may call it "lokk" or "steving" etc. It is deeple embedded in especially Norwegian folk music. But you also find it in the Swedish counties bordering to the current (!) Norwegian-Swedish border. Yes our old common history is older than the invention of borders - and is also complex after borders were invented - and to the present day, we simply do not bother about that border at all (unless a pandemic is going on). On top of this, Scandinavian folk-music has always been rooted in "dorian modes/scales". So yes - you may get a tingle here of medieval chanting structures. Or Irish scale movements. The thing here - I do not think Aurora has studied deep-time traditional music - her songs can be played on a piano in the modern piano-octave set up. But there are hints of pre-modern traditions (like the 5-note (pentatonic) systems) because she is accenting notes selectively. It makes it feel "ancient" or "tribal". Or it may even make it sound jazzy. To me she sounds like she is subconsciously pulling her compositions from age-old traditions and integrating it with her "pop-music". Our traditional music has pre-medieval roots. Way beyond the comedy show or someone singing a medieval "ballad" these days. Interesting fact. AHA - peak 80's perfection sadly mistaken for a boyband - when Morten Harket goes up to the AAA - then slightly higher A-dropping down to AAA again in that tickle - there is their Viking roots vocally (they do it all the time). While they also play with Dorian scales a lot. If you listen to "take on me" and play the chord sequence - it is actually a sad song if you play it slow by the dropping chord sequence. A better example of Scandinavian pop music is ABBA. Listen to "The winner takes it all". It always amazes me that Americans use that song as a victory-song based on the title. They are not using kulning as song-technique - they are instead splitting the harmonics of their two sensational lead singers. While they drop the modes deeper and deeper into dorian modes. Creating a massive conflict that Scandinavians have used forever. Play "winner takes it all" on a piano - and discover how the musicality makes it sound like a loss. Bitterness. Acceptance. It is only the pop-production and text that makes it sound like an anthem of victory upfront. Black metal bands are exploring the same contradictions up here. Even good electronica composers like "Biosphere" or "Røyksopp" as more mainstream example - there all these really old musical solutions embedded when you listen to "Poor Leno" and dancing away at a club party a couple of decades ago. On the lyrics of Aurora. She is an empath. So it is hard to link her lyrics to her actual experiences. I do not know what made her write 5,4,3,2,1 Murder Song. It is clearly not about her own experience. She is clearly not seed when singing the Seed. In "through the eyes..." she ends with a plea of not being left alone. In "Queendom" and "A different king of Human" she is making space for every one lost to come to her/mothership. She is an empath. If she comes up with a new song called "solar system" and in an interview say that she was inspired by a dream where she was in an egg trying to hatch - so it is. Empaths work that way. It is definitely not logic - but somehow it is valid. Cristopher Nolan for example. Most likely an empath while he shows us how dream/time folds upon itself. Clearly not anchored in physics - but an emotional interesting experience. Maybe Aurora is lyrically soft science fiction? She sure does Bowie's Life on Mars with a lot of love also vocally.

Very interesting analysis. Thank you. "Kulning" were female sounds that should be able to attract the animals. I'm pretty sure Aurora has not received any formal vocal training. She is probably self-taught, through singing her own songs. She was not raised on a farm, but probably next to some farms and there may be something in her natural voice that attracts the listener in the same way. Or maybe it's in her Scandinavian genes? She apparently also has a special connection with animals. She seems very inspired by folk music and tribal cultures. And especially fantasy litterature. Most of her songs are empathetic role-plays and she passionately engages in stories she reads, listens to, watches or composes herself. But some of the songs are also clearly based on personal experiences. She is also a very passionate metal fan. And I completely Scandinavianly agree that "The winner takes it all" is first and foremost a bittersweet song :)

I agree the basis is in ancient roots. I hear the sound of Sami Joik, I hear similarities to Eivor’s Faroese style singing that she does so well in Trollabundin, and her sound track for the TV series “The Last Kingdom.” Please watch Aurora and Wardruna Live Concert “Helvegen” sung at her home town of Bergen, which is also Einar Selvik’s hometown.

We recently decided to stop being afraid of making different music. After chasing pop music and lagging with a solid decade for like 50 years we've finally realized that music is what we want it to be. I really think we in Norway lacked the confidence to innovate in music for the longest time. We have more great artists in Norway _right now_ than we've had in the past 40 years combined. Not that hard, seeing as the only band from Norway that ever took off was A-Ha back in the 80s....

There are so many great performers coming out of Norway right now. Some are singers with fantastic voices, some sing and dabble with composition and some mostly compose. Aurora is a truly well rounded musician. Writing the lyrics and composition, co-producing her music, co-directing her videos, currently playing at least 4 instruments, and lets not forget that voice. I listen to music all day every day, from the great composers, through 70's prog, metal, art rock, jazz, blues and anything new that's not just a product of the industry at large. I believe Aurora is the best artist writing, producing and performing at the moment. Her ability to convey complex ideas in simple verse, as only a true poet can, and her ability to express so much emotion as she performs is unequaled at this time.

AURORA just turned 24 years old on June 15, 2020. She is a Norwegian singer, songwriter and record producer. Welcome to the world of Aurora ❤️ I look forward to your AURORA journey. I would suggest Running With The Wolves, It Happened Quiet, Murder Song or The Seed as your next reaction. Thank you for your reaction to this beautiful song.❤️

Besides Angelina, Aurora is one artist that makes me cry when I listen to her. Next on her list you need to check out her "the seed".💖💖💖

AURORA is in league of her own, and so versatile! Check out her environmental anthem "The Seed:" either the music video or her live performance of the song in a forest (HAIK 2019)! She is up for a Grammy this year for her duet with Idina Menzal in Frozen II. Her iconic song: "Running with the Wolves" is the central song in the new animated film "Wolfwalkers" (due out in theaters and in two weeks on Apple TV)! Also her incredible song "Soulless Creatures" was performed for the first time live this year with the Bergen Philharmonic! And her performance for KEXP in Iceland is amazing: "Churchyard" and "All is Soft Inside" !!! She is 24 years old, but started writing music as a young child.

If you want to hear something simple and powerful, listen to this exact same song by the exact same vocalist, but the stripped version. This song is even better without the instruments; trust me on that. Seriously, redo this with the stripped version. Otherwise, listen to her song The Seed, the official version, and Murder Song, Nobel Peace prize version. She is Norwegian, and Billie Eilish says that her voice was what inspired her to start singing.

Among artists and in the music industry the Norwegian singer AURORA is synonymous with quality, and she can fill a record with masterpieces time and time again. Many others are glad they manage one. Billie Eilish said in an interview that it was AURORA that made her become an artist and we were inspired to listen to her.
