AURORA on 'What Happened To The Heart?': “Apathy is the biggest enemy to progress"

Музыка

As AURORA announces her "most personal album yet" - 'What Happened To The Heart' - the Norwegian alt-pop pioneer talks to NME about searching for love and humanity in ever darker times, the situation in Palestine, working with Yungblud collaborator Chris Greatti and The Chemical Brothers Tom Rowlands, her book about 'The Gods We Can Touch', favourite sign language, and general advice for life

One of my favorite quotes regarding apathy comes from an old starwars game I played as a kid. "Apathy is death. Worse than death. Because at least a rotting corpse feeds the beasts and insects."

Are you Vegan or apathetic? “In the midst of our high-tech, ostentatious, hedonistic lifestyle, among the dazzling monuments to history, art, religion, and commerce, there are the black boxes. These are the biomedical research laboratories, factory farms, and slaughterhouses - faceless compounds where society conducts its dirty business of abusing and killing innocent, feeling beings. These are our Dachaus, our Buchenwalds, our Birkenaus. Like the good German burghers, we have a fair idea of what goes on there, but we don’t want any reality checks.” Dr. Alex Hershaft, Warsaw Ghetto survivor

It's not easy at all. The world is usually very cruel toward anyone that are unusual and don't want to play the silly games most people do, about being "normal" and similar absurd ideals. I've become pretty much crushed flat myself, trying it, even here in Norway, but I hope things are easier for youth now, at least it seems it worked for Aurora here in Norway, but she must have been lucky with many things.

It probably helps that he's been interviewing her since she started. There's a long form NME interview, with this guy, for every one of her past album releases. There's another guy, on the channel B-Sides TV, who's done long interviews with her for every album cycle since the debut as well. I really hope they hook up again this time! It makes a difference when the person she's talking to is someone she has some history with. They get each other and like each other.

I find it so interesting how Aurora helps me feel alive, since the first time I started listening to her music about 4 years ago, her music has helped me feel everything more, feel my own life. Recently I have been feeling like I am dead, like I can't feel life anymore. I don't know if this sounds stupid, but listening to her sharing her opinion on recent matters, realizing she thinks the same as me, but seeing how she hasn't lost hope unlike me, it kind of helps me have a bit of hope too. Somehow her music and her mind always helps me feel more grounded and at the same time more spiritual.

I was like this for 5 years, I think it is called depersonalisation, or at least is very similar to it. I think it was caused by very long loneliness and having absolutely nobody in my life who I feel like understands a glimpse of who I am and how I see the world. At some point I forgot who I was myself, and what I like or dislike, and wether I dreamed or experienced something. I was depressed for years before it started. It eventually slowly went away. I am not entirely sure why. Something inside me changed, but also I met people who are actually nice and found my own worth a bit from that.

I laughed and agreed when she said she hates when books in a series are different sizes. It bugs me, too. 😁 It would be awesome to have the book for every album - wow! Great interview with NME, as always. She is spot on about AI and social media influencers. I was well into adulthood before all this came on, so I can easily see the potentially dangerous deceptiveness of it. But if I were raised immersed in it, how could I know? Nothing to compare it against. That she is well aware, and speaks very well about it, is a blessing to her generation, imo.

@@Toxicdemon2 I pray you will experience the western coast here. When I grew up here as a child, some years we visited my mothers family in northern Norway, and I would just sit in the back seat of the car with my mouth open, watching such amazing beauty everywhere. You can't help it, but become filled by this beauty. The bitter winters, where the cold days and darkness, dead trees and withered grass, last longer the half the year, only make the springs even more amazing. It feels like levitating above the ground (actually, when the farmers let loose the lambs to the green grass, they just jump around with unreleased energy, back legs kicking the air higher then their head, it feels much like that for humans too) when the sun finally come back, shining with warm rays, making the little birds sing beautiful songs, and flowers and green, fertile, lush things flow up everywhere, and the snow of the mountains turn into rivers, that alone power almost the entire country with electricity, because of the immense power of the transformation. If you can't move here, at least try to visit the western coast, somewhere after May and before October. Wishing for a nice weekend for you and yours, with love from me and my kitty Lucis. 🙂

The transition from Aurora speaking about the heart and its history and the interviewer going on with the next question he robotically wrote down for the interview himself, felt to me as a good example of what Aurora was talking about. I doubt Aurora will see this comment but her conversation is wonderful. The heart now by science is being verified as a quantum capable device. It puts out a large magnetic field of which is hard to measure with current instruments but is interconnected to the universe / the field of consciousness / creation. Gregg Braden is a good source on the science behind this. Mind Heart coherence and the Human Potential as organic beings based on love. We do not need technology to invade our being, we are the technology we are looking for, Pure Human and return to a connection with nature. Times are changing and for the better.♥

What is also clear is that she's very loving and caring, a very rare thing in this world. Of course, there is also a fun, humours side to her, which is wonderful. Also really like the interviewer and how he just lets her talk while asking interesting questions and I love the fact she's learned Sign Language. I've been learning American Sign Language due to my Autism and how I'll go non-verbal. "Thank You" in ASL is your fingers together like a 5, palm facing your face/ chest, then bring the tips of the 3 long fingers toward the tip of your chin, once you've done that bring it away from your chin in a straight line and that's how we sign "Thank You", or at least how I've learned😅 Hard to explain it.

I've been a massive mega fan of her since discovering her in March of 2020. Her eternal optimism and hopeful perspective is something I find very inspiring....and something I aspire to, in part because I find that difficult. The world is....not doing great. On so many fronts. Here in America, I'm literally watching 50% of the population fall in love with the concept of a literal authoritarian dictatorship, in the form of Trump. It's SO hard to feel empathy or compassion for those people who seemingly have zero understanding for how tenuous and fragile democracy and freedom actually are. They're willing to let go of everything in order to gain the false security of living under a "strong man" leader who will blame all their problems on some scapegoated minority. It's scary. It's hard to feel hopeful. Apathy...is all too easy to succumb to. And that's just ONE of _many_ problems all over the world. I'm just glad we have someone like Aurora....giving voice to an alternative path. If her stance is dismissed as naive....then it's all over, we WILL fall apart as a species. Her voice matters now more than ever.

I am still in love of all your intense ways of ideas to muse the mind, making everything feel as relative and possible to those who will make a differance. We are the change that improves the world. We're all in this together, we're all just walking each other home. As always thank you kindly for all you do.

Such a beautiful soul. So in touch with the issues we face today. She's surprisingly focused here, it shows another side of her and I like that very much. I love how she gives the camera a gaze at 19:55 when the interviewer doesn't say the name of the song right. She could have corrected him but she chose not to do it that way. She's such a pure, solar soul.

Great conversation as always. Always enjoy her NME interviews. Just watched her live (still not over it, and mention it as often as I can 😄), and her stage banter really is unmatched. A mix between deep/meaningful and absolutely delightful bullshit. Music was great too 😁. Her last album was really good, so eagerly awaiting the new.
