AURORA on LGBTQ rights and mental health: "It's important to know you're loved"

Музыка

AURORA sits down with NME to discuss the inspiration behind her new album 'A Different Kind Of Human (Step 2)', as well as fighting for LGBTQ rights and against the stigma of mental health, her meeting with Billie Eilish - and how she terrified The Chemical Brothers when collaborating on 'No Geography'.

She actually has asperger, kinda explains her uniqueness. Women with asperger are really smart, creative and pure in their thinking. I think the biggest cause of depression for them is the state of the world. It effects them deeply. All the injustice and violence. If people like her were voted to lead instead of Trump for example we would achive world peace without even trying.

I'm a 42 year old man who, for the past 6 years, has been struggling to liberate myself from the chains of the macho culture by allowing myself to cry and express emotions. It's been an arduous and wonderful journey. "The River" was THE monumental stand in my recovery from those shackles. And what a wonderful video to parallel the message of the song. I so badly want to go to one of her concerts, but again, there will be some more work for me to do to shake that old feeling that a person of my age doesn't belong at concert like that. I pray that I'll be ready to go when the opportunity comes.

It's never too late to learn about yourself and the world that surrounds us. Being in such places (like Aurora's concert, for example) may give you something you don't expect: new fellows, either new or long-forgotten emotions/feelings/etc., gosh, even new projects opportunities. Besides, what's the point of restricting yourself? Life's too short for that. Personally, I try to live like I have half a year at max and then asking myself what do I really want to do.

That isn't childish, it's only tied to the concept of childish because of the ideals of child behavior, for instance how Aurora acts, it's just an expression of herself. Connecting it to "childish" behavior only sends a message that could challenge people who highly identify with being an adult (since it seems rare people don't look further then. Like me, I do not identify myself with adult (like if someone tells me to be an adult or are you an adult? I say no I am a wizard), I virtually have no identity, other than a need for legal reasons and work occupation. It's like some people have the notion of adults can't be sitting in trees, because children do it. I copped a lot of shit, for doing this, people would laugh at me for sitting on trees or being in random spots to meditate I would hear people laugh and say things. Some felt the need to approach me and say their opinion. Just in case, this is behavior that is what some would see and feel as suppressive (it's lighter, but a little more complicated it's just generalized), since it's an innocent act and an expression of self. I'm not saying it to make a big deal about it, more putting it out there, since some people don't realize their own actions can be suppressive to people, similar to how minorities can be treated or how society shuns peoples into addiction. Just I would die fighting for my own self-expressions then live by other people's ideals. Hence the reply, it isn't you, it's me. A lot of adults could learn a lot from children, maybe some will realize what they lost or forgot. Children are how they are, because society hasn't given them a reason to withdraw or tie themselves to certain ideals of adult, identity.

This may sound a little odd, but I find myself really relating to her. I've always been very insecure of the way I express myself, thinking that I sound stupid or inarticulate, but the way she speaks, her soft-spoken tone, looking up to gather her thoughts, cutting herself off, leaning in with her body, everything is exactly like how I express myself. As though I'm looking in a mirror. But because it's not actually me, I can look at her more objectively. And what I see isn't weird, like I thought it should be, but it's actually beautiful. So in a way, seeing her helps me feel better about the way I am, and not feel like it's a flaw that needs to be fixed, but something wonderful and unique to me. Sorry if that's cheesy and stupid, but I just felt like putting it out there.

I have discovered Aurora yesterday and watched a few interviews. I think she is absolutely amazing, but I have to say the reactions of people to her quirkiness and natural way of being just show me how out of touch people are in this day and age. Like everyone is soooo impressed by her being true to herself. Why don't we all ? If people love her so much for being that way, why aren't we more like that too? Just makes me think like everyone is in serious need to go on a field trip to the forest and eat some magic mushrooms, maybe then we'll stop looking at Aurora as some sort of magic elf. We all should be more in touch with our nature and the childlike side of us, and I think that maybe could solve many of our current society issues.

Think about what certain cultures of music and social media can attract, or mostly attract. If people knew this, and it could work it would have, but it hasn't and it will always be like this for as long as people envy, suffer and look for healing in instant gratification that is short lasting. People don't like the truth, but the "idea" of truth, a half assed cook up of shit. Their brain gets tricked in to achieving a sense of wellbeing and accomplishment, a dopamine high, an area of the brain that hasn't matured yet. Plus, it's a little more complicated than that, that for some can take a lot of time. I think nature is a good starting point, mushrooms just don't magically heal things over night (I don't care, majority doesn't mean truth), it's the brain after all and it can and does take work. If the brain has no understanding of self, awareness, mental mechanisms, anything with mental health, the mind, and any concept of anything to apply to all this, it's just blowing smoke up someone's ass. It makes me really think whether people learnt anything because it always still remains the usual opinions, or any medical drug, because nothing more comes with suggestions other than how good a drug is at fixing problems or its implied, when it isn't how it actually works with mental health in mind and individuals, with drugs used medicinally. Plus, people get all caught up in feeling good, they don't put in the hard yards, it shows with how polarized some people become to it (not you, just general observation of mushrooms in general). I even think she's magic, because she is, like everyone can be magic in the right conditions and environment, given they're happy, comfortable and secure. It's her energy people like, she has good energy, especially in some of her performances.

I think instead we should help protect others that are waking up and trying to change the world but are afraid and still coming into their own. Aurora has a very good idea of who she is and the connection she has with herself and nature is very clear, and not something most have.

It is curious I found Runaway song from her ina very dark grim depressing point of my life, and in no time trough many songs realized that my views on life, humans, the world are vastly similar to hers, that made me feel SO much better, allowing to be more me, freely without prejudice of any kind, finding many active outlets to actively work in what I love to do and Express myself the way I always wanted to do, but felt a terrible pressure of the Intimidating world.
