Audioholics 2020 Speaker of the Year: RBH Sound Limited Edition SVTRS Review

Ғылым және технология

RBH Sound has taken a quantum leap in loudspeaker design with their new Limited Edition SVTRS Active speaker system. Standing over 7.5ft tall and weighing over 300lbs/ea, these speakers are the ultimate expression of what can be achieved in consumer audio reproduction. Each speaker sports (4) 12" aluminum cone subwoofer drivers powered by 1500 watts, (3) 8" aluminum cone midbass/midrange drivers powered by 500 watts and a top of the line AMT tweeter from Aurum Cantus powered by 250 watts nestled into a proprietary driver array which RBH Sound calls "dispersion averaging array". This system has NO discernible dynamic range limitations and will satisfy the most demanding upscale installations imaginable. The SVTRS is a fully active speaker design with no analog crossovers or associated losses. RBH employs sophisticated DSP by Marani with FIR filters for perfect time alignment and phase coherency for the entire audio band. See what Gene and Don think about the sound of these monolithic wonders in our exhaustive review.

I bought a few speakers from Gene a while back and he was kind enough to demo these for my friend and I for about an hour. They are definitely incredible speakers and just because they are well beyond my budget I don't need to attack them. I am still very happy with my Paradigm Tributes, I mean insanely happy, however, it didn't take long for my ears to confirm that these are next level. Thanks for a great evening that night Gene! Congrats on the hard work paying off so that you can enjoy these speakers that were a fabulous choice for speaker of the year!

Congratulations on those gorgeous beasts!!!!! I originally thought I was going to upgrade with JBL the HDI line but after purchasing the on wall RBH SV-661W for my surrounds which aren't even they're reference level I was so so so BLOWN away I think it's the direction I'm heading. I already own 2 of there subs the SV-1212NR and the SV-1212PR. Literally 2 of the best subs I've ever heard my entire life and I've heard a lot of them. My only dilemma now is do I go 3 full range RBH towers or just buy 2 more 1212NR subs for 4 corner loads subs in room and then 3 of there modular tops independently positioned for my L C R the SV-831R which may work better in my room. Then do the SV 661WR for my surrounds and ceiling mount the SV-661W's on the ceiling for my atmos. Ohhhhhh decisions decisions. 😂 Congrats man! So happy for your purchase!

Much more modest than these but unbelievable performance. They use the hypex electronics and i use acmini dsp studio for a preamp. Everything stays digital so the way to the amps. It's incredible heating that direct coupleing effect where nothing ISD in the way. I use quonuz and sudirvana from a laptop as a source. It employees dirac live for room correction. It's magical. I Need some expert advice. I just purchased a marantz 7015 AVR with a 7055mm amplifier. My question is the pre outs on the AVR, can they be split? I want to split the front channel to power a second set of klipsch towers totalling 4 over to my amp. since my theater room is rather large. Kind of like a surround wide channel. Anybody with insight on this I'd appreciate it. I don't know if the pre outs are fused. Are there any sound quality issues by trying this??

Sorry buddy, but that’s an ignorant comment. That’s like saying your eyes are only good enough to see standard definition instead of high definition. Listening to these speakers is the sonic equivalent of listening to high definition vs standard definition.... Let me explain. I heard this system with the timing filters turned off and then with them turned back on. A clarity of sound like nothing I’ve ever experienced popped into existence. It’s definitely something you can experience. Your ears hear it! The size of the speakers are needed to create virtually unlimited dynamics, the technology creates perfect phasing and perfect timing. It’s a sonic achievement not accomplished by multi driver arrays of any kind, anywhere, by anyone! It truly is groundbreaking and one of a kind experience you have to hear to believe. Don’t dismiss it just because of the price. It’s incredible.

@@OHMAudioChannel oh trust me. I’ve done all that years ago. Like I mentioned I’ve had it like this for roughly 5 years. Bi amp the receiver and run each speaker off each Channel. Basically converts. 7.1 channel to a 5.1 and give you the 4 front speakers all running at the same wattage. You should try it my man. The tweeters are still at ear height. But now you have two of them. Should try it. Run them at full range and use the speakers in built crossover and then use the receivers crossover for the subs.

without some good objective measurements (ie, Klippel based from all different angles) this is just marketing hype. I am sure these speakers sound good. But I see issues with some of the design choices that I would need to see addressed before I would spend this kind of money on a speaker system. Anyone with experience will want to know how they are dealing with the IMD and ringing of those metal midranges. Anyone with experience will want to know how they are dealing with serious dispersion issues from a tweeter that is so tall compared to its width. Making a comment that "horns don't sound good" gives away a bias. I guess you haven't heard or tested the JBL M2. And that is bias coming from a guy who admittedly is a dealer for the speakers. I checked out at that point.

I'm sure these rock and roll, ... I mean a ton of power, bulldoze the response with EQ, time align the crossover points, ... yeah, I'd enjoy experiencing them. (Not unlike what Mark Seaton has been doing for 10-15 years with his Catalyst designs, except they enjoy a more point source approach) This RBH in a big room with considerable distance between the listener and the folded AMT, the typical inherent issues with vertical coverage is likely mitigated somewhat. I'm curious if they restrict the top and bottom 8", and only allow the center 8" to pass off to the AMT. Obviously they don't do that in the DSP, but perhaps a passive low pass in the cabinet. Whatever, I trust they're well executed. I'm sure many enthusiasts, myself included, can point out potential issues, blah blah blah, etc, ... but I guarantee the sheer dynamic capability that accompanies an offering like this is a wonderful thing to behold. There's an immediacy that some powerful designs possess, ... it's ability to track the signal without being plagued by lossy macro and micro dynamics robbing design issues ... I'm sure these are a helluva lot of fun! Isn't that what it's all about?

Gene, why didn't you go with JL Audio subs for the 2 additional subs in the new Showroom? In your current Showroom, you had the RBH subs in your Status Acoustics but went with a Velodyne and a JL Audio sub to supplement the bass put out by the RBH subs. I know you also were a big fan of JL Audio subs in the downstairs room of your current home and you decided to keep the JL Audio brand of subs in the new Smart Home living room (and also in the Smart Home bedroom). So, obviously you still think highly of the technology in their current models. So, it's not like the brand is dying. Can you please share your reasoning for going with 6 RBH subs in the new Showroom (maybe in a future video)? This knowledge might be helpful for the Audioholics that are planning their next upgrades. Thank you for all the vids.

@@Audioholics Thank you. I know you have explained why it is important to have all 11 speakers in our HT's to be from the same brand (if possible). Especially, for the front LCR (timbre matching so you get the same tone across the front soundstage). From a knowledge standpoint, I would just like to learn (and probably all Audioholics would) if there was a specific reason why you used to mix sub brands and now decided to keep all one sub brand? Maybe it's easier for calibration (different slopes among the subs make it more difficult to blend? Is that what you mean by easier integration?)? Was there something you learned from past mistakes (does sound quality improve by using the same brand of subs for < 80Hz?) or was it just a personal preference (having all the subs from one brand makes it easier to calibrate and it isn't for SQ)? Thanks again.

I miss Daren too! He was always a very kind and gentle guy. I met him on a number of occasions. I have in my office 2x SV-61Rs that I had RBH custom build a dual set of binding posts. I'm using a DSP to bi-amp and tune (not FIR yet, but LR-24dB/O active crossover) to drive the smaller AMT tweeter and 6.5" aluminum drivers with phase plug. I paired those with an RBH prototype 10" subwoofer that BLEW ME AWAY. I had to apply a high pass filter at about 25hz bc I wasn't used to so much deep deep bass. It gets lower than my Klipsch 12" upstairs. Unbelievable. In my car I've got RBH ring driven tweeter (the same tweeter that is in or going to be in Gene's overhead Atmos channels - great tweeter!), Coupled with the no longer available 4" beryllium driver with phase plug mounted on my dash, with JL Audio C5s in the doors - that's a fully active DSP driven three-way front stage - no analog crossovers at all. A JLA DSP twk88, JLA HD600/4, JLA 300/4v1, JLA HD750/1 mono sub amp driving a JL Audio 10W7AE in their sealed box. It's hard to get much better than that. I'm an electrical engineer and for my senior project I did FIR filters with rbh speakers and let me add my second witness that FIR active speakers (or 2nd best DSP IIR crossover active speakers) will always sound better, more pristine, more detailed, more perfectible than any passive analog crossover could ever do.

I looked into the SVTRS limited edition towers. It was disappointing to see they only warranty the amplifier and Marani for 1 year. Flagship equipment in this price range should be better. For example, Legacy Audio, also primarily a speaker manufacturer, warranties their Class D amps (based on Bang & Olufsen's Ice modules) for 3 years. Rotel Michi Class AB amps come with 5 year warranties. ATI Amplifiers warranties their Class D amps (based on Bruno Putzkey's Hypex Ncore modules) for 7 years. Even mass produced AVRs like those from Denon come with a two year warranty. Don Dunn always talks about one of the greatest lessons he has learned from his decades of experience is to install electronic equipment that works, like mass produced units from Denon/Marantz, Yamaha, etc. One year for a product in this price range is like rolling the dice for a consumer that doesn't have a long history with RBH like Audioholics does. Also, RBH is the only company mentioned above that does not publish its amplifier specs on their website. They only tell you power rating and Ohms. Everyone else provides: 1) frequency response from 20Hz-20Khz at all power levels and with 8 and 4-Ohm loads, 2) amplifier gain for balanced and unbalanced inputs, 3) THD+N, 4) continuous power bandwidth, 5) SNR, 6) Crosstalk, 7) Damping factor, etc. etc. It's like buying a black box.

@@Audioholics There is an asterick next to the five year warranty on the SVTRS Limited Edition tower series page. The asterick is defined as follows: * Warranty period: 5 years on the cabinet and woofers, and 1 year on the amplifier. It appears right below the specifications.

interesting, so two years ago these were $45 grand, now they're $59 grand? what is the deal with that? I could understand an increase of say 3 grand but 14 grand warrants explanation as its a head scratcher. not saying the speakers are not worth the price. so stop typing. I do think its strange that RBH now wants $59k

  • @Audioholics

It's called inflation. Every major brand has has drastic price increases. Just look at Bowers & WIlkins as example. The RBH SVTRS system is worth every penny even at the $59k price. Show me another speaker that offers so much with sophisticated DSP, amplification, and lots of cone area for deep bass and extreme output and have the designer come to your place to set up and calibrate it.
