ARNOLD CLASSIC 2004 I Pudzianowski vs Savickas

Спорт

People often ask who is the greatest strongman in the World ever - and two names are often discussed: Mariusz Pudzianowski (Poland) + Zydrunas Savickas (Lithuania)
In this FULL TV SHOW they fight for the Super Series World Championship title at the Arnold Classic in Ohio (2004).
The then Governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger - who puts the expo on each year - can be seen enjoying the strongman with his celebrity friends (including Sylvester Stallone ) amongst the crowd watching.
Prior to the Arnolds in 2004, Zydrunas Savickas had been solid but was yet to win a Super Series Grand Prix.
But, Big Z had podiumed 8 times in 2003 and he he had won the the Arnold Classic in Ohio.
Big Z, came to the Arnold Classic 2004, as the favourite to win.
The Super Series and the Arnold Classic in this year had joined forces, and had made this contest the final Series stop. The Series would decide the World Championship Series.
Athletes who competed at contests gained points that then accumulated over the Series, and this final event of the that years series would then crown the 'ifsa World Champion'.(this ended in 2005)
The Polish Strongman - Mariusz Pudzianowski - came to the Arnold Classic with a points lead in the Series, and he was hoping to replicate his WSM winning form and win here and thus become both WSM winner in 2003 and the Super Series World Champion, as well as the Arnold Classic title winner - so much was up for grabs over the weekend of action.
Other stars at the show included WSM winner Svend Karlsen (WSM 2001) as well as the winner of the WSM title that hadn't yet been decided in 2004 - Vasyl Virastyuk of Ukraine.
Plus, Mark Henry the WWE wrestler and Arnold winner in 2002 was apart of the referee team
Savickas went on to win 8 x Arnold Classic titles, 6 x Giants Live Titles - including 3x Europe's Strongest Man wins, and he cemented his legend with 4 x WSM titles, as well. Though Pudzianowski would go on to win 5 WSM titles before moving to MMA.
After this year, the 'World's Strongest Man Super Series', as it was known from 2005 onwards, was the first time a formatted path was created for athletes to make it to the 'World's Strongest Man'. The man who created the 'WSM Qualifying Tour' concept is the same man who produced, presented and voiced this show in 2004. That man is Colin Bryce, who founded Giants Live in 2009 which has been the WSM Qualifying vehicle ever since.

That is Correct. The split that IFSA did on WSM was actually in early 2005. Which means WSM 2004 was under IFSA - but 2005 was not. This Arnolds in 2004 was IFSA (so too was the Super Series in 04, but not in 05). In mid 2004 IFSA had signed almost all of the top 50 athletes exclusively to them. IFSA's hope was that WSM would then collapse after they pulled away from WSM in 05 - the goal was to create a massive void of and athletes) would collapse. IFSA wanted WSM to end as they wanted their own World Champs, and they didn't want to share it with the Super Series either. So, in the end, WSM turned to a man they knew well - Colin Bryce, his partner Odd Haugen brought over the Super Series to help WSM. They helped build WSM back up from a near death blow. Therefore, despite 2004's Super Series being the IFSA World Championship Series. In fact, this was probably the last IFSA event for the Super Series. And thanks to Mariusz, who was the one man who rejected IFSA and went to WSM, there was, and is now, a strong strongman sport. IF WSM had ended at that point I reckon it may have stunted the strongman growth fairly heabvily. The modern sport would be drastically different and worse off for it I think.

@@GiantsLiveSTRONGMAN Colin, is that you? :D And how come Mariusz continued with WSM? Was he under some sort of contractual obligation? In Big Z's book, he mentions that IFSA paid a pretty hefty retainer to the athletes. Doesn't make sense that Mariusz would reject this without good reason/obligation.

@@TL13579 > Doesn't make sense that Mariusz would reject this without good reason/obligation. Easier to get 5 titles, when BigZ isn't around for 3 of them during BigZ's prime years. Edit: Without the split, BigZ would have taken 2 or 3 of those WSM titles as well, leaving Mariuz with 2-3 titles total and BigZ with 6-7 WSM titles and the GOAT title in all major comps.

At this time around we knew that Big Z is known more for the static strength favor whereas Mariusz is known for his body conditioning, intense and fast movement strength. Any type of super heavy comp will always be on Big Z's favor whereas faster movement comp is Mariusz's favorite (just like many WSM events at the he was time competing from 2000 to 2009, even no max lift like Max Deadlift or Max Log Press back in the 2000s WSM)

  • @roybatty-

Mariusz didn't train for static lifts. He trained to win WSM titles. If he stopped his grueling cardio training and packed on another 80lbs, his static lifts would have been massive.

@@Vipinnnn17 When you say "beat" we can only look at the times Mariusz and Zydrunas went head to head. It's like 16-8 lifetime in Mariusz's favor. All we have to go by, is the times they directly competed against each other Anything else that either you or I can bring up would be an "IF." My point is simply that IF Mariusz cut out all the cardio he did and packed on 80lbs, he would have improved his static lifts but it would probably have cost him WSM titles. The format of the Arnold vs WSM from 2003-2009 was WAY too different for any single athlete to win both in one year. As a matter of fact NO ONE won both an Arnold and a WSM in the same year between 2003-2009. Zydrunas did not compete in the Arnold in 2009 and instead focused to win the 2009 WSM. Around 2010 the formats of both contests became much more similar, however it would not be until 2014 till Zydrunas could win both despite competing in both. Likewise, Mariusz could not win both in the early 2000's despite competing in both. Brian Shaw and Hafthor got both but in 2011, 2015 and 2018, but during these years the contests were nearly identical in terms of lifts, allowing athletes to be prepared for both all year. I'd like to also bring up the point that Mariusz competed at the Arnold Strongman Classic in 2006 despite the split between the IFSA and WSM. So, cross competition WAS possible. So the excuse that Zydrunas could not come to WSM during the split does not hold water.
