Are Old .22's Accurate?

If you are like me, and you love older vintage .22's, then this video is one you don't want to miss. I will be making a 2 part video in which I test some older Remington .22 rifles, and I do a bit of restoration work on these out of production .22's.

@@CumberlandOutdoorsmanI recently bought a Remington 572 Fieldmaster, in very good condition, but is fairly dirty inside. I have watched several videos on KZread for disassembly, and they all have a screw on the left side of the receiver to remove, mine doesn't have that screw. Older model or something? The only roll marks I see on the barrel near the reciever are DD, and A7, haven't really seen what that stands for. Thanks for your time. Sam

Sure. Your 572 is easily cleaned by removing the three retaining pins that hold the trigger/firing unit in place. In this video I demonstrate how to do this on a Rem. 552, and it's the same for the 572. Just fast forward to the 14:00 mark, kzread.info/dash/bejne/moiu2tCnqry-obg.html@@samchase2563

Glad y’all are on the mend. Prayers for wellness. Man those old Remingtons shoot! I have a Remington Improved Model 6 falling block .22 that was made in October 1932. It’s my first .22 rifle that my Pop got for me in 1966 or ‘67. It’s still a fantastic shooter. I took it on a squirrel hunting woods walk and plinking outing about a month ago and had great fun shooting that ol rifle. I didn’t know what to be amazed the most about; the ability of the old rifle to shoot such tight groups out to fifty yards, or my ability to shoot the iron sights that well with my 64 year old bad eyes….😁 Great video and I pray for continued healing in every way.

“Only accurate rifles are interesting.” So goes the quote from Col. Townsend Whelen, and he was right. The man had a huge influence on cartridge development; as the commanding officer of the Frankford Arsenal he teamed up with James Howe-later of Griffin & Howe fame-to use the .30-’06 case as the basis for cartridges of many different calibers. I have several books by Whelen , and he was instrumental in many of our present day cartidges and accuracy enhancing techniques for rifles , and shooting . Excellent reads if you have not , but I "suspect" you already know this . Thank You for all the time you spend bringing us these entertaining and informative videos . For those of us that enjoy the same activities you do , it is a blessing to see someone else that is able to convey the joy and outdoorsmanship that you posess .

I’m glad that you and your wife are getting better! Scary stuff. On to a better note….those old guns really shoot great! I fixed up an old Remington model 12 C that was manufactured in October of 1913 and it shot a one hole group at 25 yards using CCI standard velocity ammo. The gun wore a tang mounted peep sight. Those old model 12’s were only meant to shoot standard velocity ammo. I think the model 121 was designed for the then new “Superspeed” ammo.

Now it’s up to you to apply some of your recipes and get her back to full strength. Your test firing of those old Remingtons was quite impressive, both are certainly keepers. I just mounted a compact 4X scope on the little Savage 29B I recently acquired and picked up a nice High Standard Supermatic Citation 107 Military target pistol last night. My wife brought covid in from her work so i spent new years day down in the bed. I'm doing better but now it's just hard to get enough air sometimes but i already have other issues that make it harder to woop these things. You are right about the old 22s. It's always seemed to me like there was a time when they all shot good. Back then i guess especially in the south where you and i live it could mean wither there was meat on the table or not for many families. Though powders and primes and things have improved through the years with ammo it sure seems like they also had fewer quality control issues back then. This generation just don't take the pride in their work that the older genration did. Anyhow i'm rambling so stay safe and well and happy shooting!

Dear “Mr. Cumberland”. God Bless you and your family , your wife in particular! What a horrible Christmas & New Year you had separated from each other due to different and potentially life threatening illnesses!! You say you are BOTH on the mend now and that’s really good to hear. I live across ‘The Pond’ in the UK, on the outskirts of London and have followed and subscribed to your really excellent posts for a good couple of years now, perhaps a little longer(?) and find all that you have to say informative and interesting, especially as I too am a Shooter and Reloader, owning several centre-fire rifles, a lovely little Anschutz .22 LR rifle, a semi shotgun and a Ruger Old Army .45 black powder pistol. I particularly enjoy your .22 Rimfire posts. I just wish I could find some .22 SHORT cartridges over here!! I used to shoot RWS .22 shorts through my Anschutz when I first bought it - back in the mid ‘80s - but the supply of ANY shorts here has just about dried up, which is a real pain!! Please keep posting your terrific and information rich Channel posts and I will continue to “like” & “subscribe “!! I sincerely hope you and your good wife continue to get back to normal, healthy life together and that you have a particularly good year coming now… Sincere Best Wishes, Steve.

Wonderful! I hope the 581 is in good shape. One bit of advice I would like to pass on to you is to keep the box that new model 60 came in. Any firearm in good condition is worth more if you have the original box to go along with it. Sounds like you really scored at that pawn shop! Thanks for sharing your story.@@jstud999

Getting out to put a few rounds down range always helps the spirit. Nice duo of little rifles to work your magic on. Anxious to see the wood on the bolt action cleaned up. Take care! 🙏👍🇺🇸

You don't see many older model 121's around. Maybe not the best for target shooting but I'll wager it's a great field gun and excellent planking rifle. I'd sure love to find a clean model to add to my collection. Thanks for sharing them with us.

I have a Remington 582 my father bought when i was about 10. It's had dozens and dozens of bricks fired through it. Has some rust but with its 4 power Redfield scope (mounted when purchased) it's still very accurate. Takes many squirrels each year. With shorts its a great rifle for beginners who are frightened by the report of a firearm. Also none of the empty the clip to make noise stuff the semiautomatic brings out from some people

All my 22 rifles are from the 1960s and older and are deadly accurate. I dont use scopes on them. My first 22 was a remington model 4 rolling block from the late 1890s it was and is dead on. 2 of mine are 1950s High standard s and are some of my favorites

Must've sprinkled a little magic dust into them 121s when they built 'em. Mine has a Lyman aperture mounted at the rear, and a Lyman 17A at the front. Bought it from the estate of a left handed target shooter in Cheyenne, Who years ago. Before the neuropathy in my arms and hands, and cataracts developed, I could wring similar performance. Biggest downside was not being able to effectively use a sling in position shooting.

So glad to hear you both made it home safe and sound. Thank the Good Lord he carried you both through these horrible afflictions you both endured. But yes it seems no matter which mfgr we turn to. They seem to work better the older they are. As long as they were taken care of, for the most part. Or not just completely worn out. Lol. I have an old 22 Ethica lever action that I wouldn't let go of for anything. It's completely inoperable. The firing pin is in probably 7 pieces and the barrel basically looks like a shotgun barrel. Lol. I carried it from age 8 to 12. I didn't realize it until I was an adult. But the degradation of that rifle and being a single shot actually made me into a better hunter. The worse that rifle got. The closer I had to get. And it was especially hard because my Dad taught me to always make head shots on the rabbits and squirrels so as not to waste any meat. I always kept the freezer full so when I turned 12 Mom & Dad bought me a Marlin Glenfield 60 with the squirrels on the stock. That's still a fast little tac driver to this day. And a Bear recurve bow to learn how to deer hunt. My 1st day in the timber with my bow in 1983 I harvested my 1st deer. That following Christmas they got me a Marlin 336CS in 30/30. I've never had any need for any other weapons other than a shotgun for fowl and a pdw. These weapons I've mentioned have fed 3 households for over 40 years now. They just don't make'em like they used to. Those 2 nail drivers you have are perfect examples. Great video. So sorry I bent your ear so long. I just love old guns.

Could you let me know which scope mount is on that 121? I have a 121 with four holes drilled in the receiver like your example. I'd like to fill up those holes appropriately. Probably some model of Weaver. You do a great job on these 22 videos. Glad to hear the Lord heard those prayers!

The scope mount is made by Weaver (I think). It has an impression on it that says N5. The scope is a 4X Weaver.

I hope you and your wife are doing better now. Maybe you kids should go out and have some fun and get some sort of routine started for a more youthful shoot at the golden years. (They're right around the corner) As for the rifles I wish i would have seen the value in 22's that's there now because you can pick them up cheap, and they're a lot of fun. (more so when you have your own place to shoot and put around on though)
