Have you ever wondered if Europe's grand history and artsy vibes give it a more 'civilized' edge over the U.S.? Or maybe you've heard some stereotypes questioned yourself "Is there any truth to that?" In this video, I am taking a close look at famous inventors, iconic architecture, cultural gems, and so much more from both sides of the pond. Let's break down those age-old assumptions, celebrate unique achievements, and see if we can finally answer that burning question: Are Europeans truly more civilized than Americans? I like to think of it more simple terms. In the US, it's "I need it now". In Europe it's "We need it now". The US culture tends to emphasise individualism, valuing personal achievement, independence, and self-expression. European culture often leans more towards collectivism, emphasising community, social cohesion, and shared values. I know where I'd prefer to live 😉 You made the right choice Antoanetta

I share your comment, American individualism offered many opportunities when America was a virgin territory, everyone could achieve their goals, today this is no longer the case, because your goals no longer depend only on your abilities, the economic level of the community greatly influences family where you come from, that is why in the USA the state should intervene more to equalize the starting positions and also to ensure a minimum for the most disadvantaged, this would limit the ultra-competitiveness that exists in American society and that the population could take life more calmly

You are spot on. That’s the European problem. The ones who fight for a better life, are stollen in crazy taxes for the lazy ones. No matter how you try in this system, it will never work. Ask to any spanish hard worker. And he will tell you what “collectivism is”.

Thanks Antoanetta from Aracena. I really like Your content. I think civilisation has two facets. The one is the overall concept of a culture, in this way the US are still very young and dont't have a civilisation of its own. It is just a part of the western civilisation, which has its roots in ancient greece. The founders of the US have made very clear, from where they got their ideas, on which they built the state. The other side is a personal one. It depends on the education one has gotten in the youth. So, You can't judge people just from their birth place, whether they embody with their personal habits and knowlegde a person of western civilisation. Spoken from personal experience I say, that it is easier to find people in Europe being well educated in those western civilisation habits. It gives a bit more of a solid foundation. In the US are more people without that foundation. That leads to the effect, that there are often many new crazy ideas, in which people believe for some years, before they fade out and something new comes up. Fortunately we don't import everything from the US. There are some fast food restaurants in the big cities in Spain, but more or less we eat traditionally here. It is just healthier.

I think the great importance of what is happening in Europe is that many countries that have always been at war internally or with the other countries of Europe itself, enjoy the inherent benefits of cooperating with each other and not trying to destroy each other every half hour. There is still a long way to go... but how easy it is to get used to peace, although we have to be aware that this means strengthening ourselves in case we have to face a war, even if it is from the unity of Europe.

The term "civilization" has its origins in the Latin word "civilis," which means "relating to citizens." In other words it comes from city. There is no civilisation without cities. Therefore if you want to talk about civilisation in America you need to talk about cities in America. Don’t conflate cultural production, which America is dominant, with civilisation. Culture is fungible. Civilisations aren’t that’s why they usually perish before being able to transform themselves. Life is lived differently in the US not only because the economic system is different but I’d say even more fundamental to that is that cities are radically different. To start with (by and large I must say) they are designed around the car. Just imagine what would happen in the vast majority of cities in the US if all cars suddenly disappeared. Can a civilised life be lived in such conditions? And all the innovations that you talk about are fine but they can be absorbed, refined, and improved everywhere. Nobody cares that the steam engine was developed in Britain and Britain’s culture is only marginally defined by it. But you know what is more difficult to replicate? A cathedral, a building, an aqueduct, a park, a plaza, Cambridge, etc.

Antoanetta, I think being a civilized country is embedded in the historical values, aspirations and accomplishments of a country. There’s always going to be discrepancies among those three. It’s difficult to make a comparison between Europe and America as one was birthed by the other and, in effect, is a further iteration or expression of the other. Historically, the Greek and Roman empires were among the most civilized, but Rome, in particular, conquered kingdoms that were quite barbaric, including England. The Nordic countries were considered extremely barbaric and created a huge scope of trade, including slave trade, and ended up civilizing themselves through their integration into their conquered societies and embracing Christianity. Ultimately one folds into the other. Europe developed colonialism by which they exploited the natural resources and humans that populated a claimed land or nation and the people or chattel that they brought. In the example of the US and Canada Europe, in particular Great Britain, France, Spain, and The Netherlands, used these countries as their banks and also allowed for their privatization, using the dehumanization and brutalization of other humans as their basis of creating more wealth than any nations had ever seen and upon which they built their modern societies and cultures. Fast forward and this business model continued and still to a certain extent exists today. and the exploitation definitely continues, all the while the environment and climate deteriorating around us at an alarming rate. Even countries, territories disappearing with animals, flora and humans needing to escape or perish. All the while people elsewhere enjoying their pain au chocolat, steak tartare, and cultural tour. Go ahead and compare fat Americans eating Big Macs with Northerm Europeans breaking away to Paris or London or buying a condo in hip Valencia. Overall, regardless of who wins, your question comes off as curiously irrelevant, pedantic and self-serving. Oh! And, don’t look up.

I selected this city after much study. On the internet from Numbeo, you can compare the Quality Of Life between two cities. Every country / city in North/ Latin America lacks this QOL. USA wants to obtain results by force. Yes, no history. Lawless was the origin. Coimbra has a more than 2200 years history. Celtic tribes, Romans, Muslims, crusaders, kings... And since 1974 no hatred, peaceful life, nearly no police (opposed to Germany and the US). Not every European is more civilized than a Northamerican. But most USA citizens are so convinced of being better, that they call themselves "Americans"

"But most USA citizens are so convinced of being better," You're not American and have no right to say that. You don't know what goes on in our minds. We call ourselves American because america is in the name of our country. The United States of America. Just like there's the EU, despite the fact that no every European country is within the EU. Think before you speak.

No. Everyone in this world has their bad apples. Every single country. I’ve lived in the EU and US long enough to know that humans, no matter where they come from, are either bad, good, sane, or insane. Just depends on who and what they choose to be. Being “civilized” is also highly subjective.

"Civilization" matches exactly to the land that Romans achieved. Out of these territories, there is Barbarism, not civilization. Just have a look to the british crowds spending their holidays in Benidorm or Magalluf to understand what "barbarism" means. Using olive oil is also another fact to detect where there is civilization or barbarism

If a state or nation has a culture, or cultures, cities, great works and philosophy, medicine then they are civilized. I'm still not sure how people think they're more civilized because their ancestors created things. You can't have pride in something you had no part in making. You can revered your ancestors and keep on with traditions, but you are not more civilized because you live near the colosseum.

The reason for Europe (and also most of the "old world" btw.) being more civilized is less the result of european merits than of the direction in which the U.S. developed. Civilization is first and foremost leaving the "law of the jungle" behind in order to build something better and more oganized. Something that benefits the weak just like the strong instead of a "winner takes all" mentality. So what makes the U.S. less civilized, is mainly being an extremely competitive society. Another reason is, that Europe was shaped by aristocrats, while the U.S. were shaped by opportunists. If the town, you're responsible for and that might also have your family name, looks like crap, you'd be ashamed. You're aware of your obligations towards your ancestors and future generations. So what you want to leave behind should be made of quality and outlast you. The opportunist's focus is on climbing stairs, made of short term profit. He just sees the present and near future. And the past is only there to brag about how far he had come. And what are starving people in a town, run by opportunists? Well, they're the problem of those starving losers. In a town, run by an aristocrat, they're a mark of shame on the aristocrat's reputation, revealing either his lacking competence or his lacking sense of duty.

Only human stupidity is forever. America is a great country, but with many problems due, in my opinion, to the individualism of its society, which was good when America was a virgin territory and everyone could achieve their goals, but this individualism brought extreme capitalism and now the United States should have more community awareness, and establish policies that will end social inequality and offer equal opportunities again
