Are Aston Villa ready for Champions League qualification?

Спорт

Wednesday night saw Aston Villa stumbling in pursuit of securing a top four place in the Premier League losing 4-1 away to Manchester City.
But as Newcastle have shown this season despite huge spending, qualifying for Europe puts a huge strain on smaller squads especially when financial rules make it harder to spend.
And as Ange Postecoglou commented in the week, Champions League qualification doesn't necessarily provide what clubs are seeking, if they're unable to push on and compete.
Ayo Akinwolere is joined by The Athletic's Tottenham writer Jack Pitt-Brooke, Aston Villa writer Jacob Tanswell and Newcastle United writer Chris Waugh to discuss how the Premier League's growing collection of upwardly ambitious clubs sustained continued Champions League qualification amid the backdrop of strict financial spending limits.

On the Man City Villa game - how strange was it that the media were talking about Haaland and De Bruyne being on the bench and ginormous praise for that youngster Phil Foden stepping up against CL competing Aston Villa in their absence... yet little to no mention of Aston Villa missing Martinez, Cash, Mings, Kamara, McGinn, Ramsey, Buendia, Watkins all out injured, and resting Torres, Tielemans, and Bailey - that is a whole potential starting 11 and the spine of our best players! Thought we were great 1st half, undone by a silly free kick and a weak wall. Second half was a lot to ask, but may have been different if we had not conceded that silly goal before HT, and sometimes you just get done by great finishing - Foden's two finishes were excellent - that's the sport, it happens. Given the opposition and our unavailable players & resting some - I take a lot of positives after that game.

Always thought the twitter space was full of babies but in recent months I can’t help but feel like there is truth in it. Imagine if Newcastle or Brighton had done what we did this season. The whole league would be talking about it and would be everyone’s ‘2nd team’

Tottenham aren't getting those revenues because they built a stadium; they're getting them because they built it in London. You could build the biggest arena in the world in Newcastle and it still won't generate the same kind of money because the people of the UK outside of London have many orders of magnitude less disposable income to throw at things like concerts and season tickets. If PSR regs stay as they are then West Ham are more likely than anyone else to establish themselves long-term. Our economy is just too geographically imbalanced for other regions' clubs to obtain that trajectory organically without massive foreign commercial revenues or corrupt deals like City have used.

It is possible to redevelop Villa Park but there seems to be a sudden lack of confidence. Anfield is in an area of Liverpool that is similar to Aston, and yet they are developing Anfield. The problem is the local Birmingham Council who appear to be dragging their feet about any plans to redevelop the rail stations in Aston. Villa can fill 60,000 but getting in and out of Aston on public transport is a nightmare, and even worse by car. If Birmingham Council wants the city to host major Football competition it needs to either build a new stadium for the Midlands or simply stop dragging their feet and help Aston Villa achieve their goal.

This is one of the reasons I've been hoping for a general election for the past few years. The culture of spending - and treating councils as an expense rather than a vehicle for economic growth - is so incredibly backwards, and has hurt the entire country, but especially so the larger councils in non-tory areas. What a shame that our politicians have been so incredibly small-minded and self-absorbed :( Sadly, given the sheer ammount of damage done to the country (not just in terms off finances - things have never been worse - but in attitudes to services and what they are and how they should function), it may take a decade or more before Local Authorities are back on stable grounds, and allowed to stop wasting so much money on consultants to do their jobs for them, and most importantly, to begin to take on the role entirely, as we see in some of the world's better-run cities. Birmingham Council is a stark examlpe of how not to run a major municipality. And that's not the fault of the Council itself - the entire ethos has to be changed. Councils are not there purely to provide basic functions and allow extraction of value for private interests. They are much better off for both the private sector and public whom they serve when they are properly used to organise, create and distribute. ... ... sorry, i know it's a football channel, but the reality is politics has such a massive impact upon the fortunes of the Clubs, especially in the long-term. Look at the ridiculous good fortune Spurs, West Ham etc enjoy, just from being located in London, as compared to Villa, Newcastle etc. Then consider how long Villa Park has required better transport links, how much money has been available to achieve that - and there are multiple avenues of achieving it - and the absolute dread induced in the Council at the idea of spending to benefit to area. Transport links in many ways are actually worse now than they were ten years ago. How backwards is that! .... ... NVM. We'll always be there to support the VIlla, but bloody hell do I ever wish that folks who understand society were allowed to run it, rather than populist politicians who have no understanding of the consequences of their choices, and little to no interest in ever seeing the bigger picture.

It certainly isn't an overachievement. The club has been spending and building since they came back to the premier league; it should be no Suprise to anyone that they're in the mix this term now they've got an elite manager. Injuries have brought about a level of inconsistency, but let's get it right the reason they haven't got the required depth (yet) is because of fair play rules. The owners have got serious ambition it's only a matter of time before people take them seriously and stop talking biased nonsense.

Tottenham or Villa could very well come away with a TROPHY in a Europa campaign rather than get embarrassed in Ro16 as seems to happen a lot these days in the UCL. No matter what, I'd still be real worried about managing that squad if I'm Emery or Postecoglou. It's likely not the best development timing, let alone the probable injury & energy problems for everyone involved in the dressing room. Hold on to their players but don't spend the extra UCL revenue. Try to qualify again and if we do then spend. I think you're right though. If we can get Coutinho and a couple of others off the books completely the wage bill will drop. Maybe bring Sousa through and sell Digne (I like him but could fetch £12-15m plus he's one of the highest paid players). Would allow for at least one bigger signing. A nonsensical question really, firstly Villa need to qualify & if we do it then you can take the nessesary steps to make yourself ready, You can look at.potential revenues, maybe taking the worst case scenario by falling at the 1st hurdle to be safe, 8 games are garrantied & UCL football is worth 30% extra than the current system, all in you maybe looking at £50 million, so that's the figure you've got on top of any other budget put aside for equipping yourself for UCL football & Villa already have an elite manager that iis a specialist in European compitition. As a fellow Villa fan I think it's widely acknowledged Jacob Transwell knows exactly what he's talking about. Have read him all year on The Athletic and he's spot on. Villa are fairly close to the wind on FFP and the logic is we would need to sell to spend any kind of decent money. Finally I for one don't believe the narrative around the North Stand redev and it being put 'on hold' to keep our attendances for CL. If it's on hold when will it be un- paused? I think the real reasons are that the costs jumped and Birmingham Council are practically bankrupt and would offer little assistance. Villa desperately need to grow their revenue base if we wish to ever compete in a meaningful way financially with the big boys. The redev is desperately needed and building costs only ever rise. The talk/rumour therefore has moved on to us potentially leaving Villa Park? This would be massively dividing. Anyway UTV

But the fact that there's more money in the system isn't a hindrance to any particular club. It's an incentive for clubs to do better, and clubs like Newcastle that do well on a lower budget are gooto attract more money in terms of investment and sponsorship. Always
