If Southgate does not have the defensive players then he has to play to England's strengths, which is attack, score more than the other team can, trying to play in a way that covers for the weak defence is exactly what he has done in the past and he made the amazing attack weak, play one holding midfielder to cover unless your playing a more attacking team, but then you pick players that are perfect for the counter attack, one thing you cant do is try to sit on a 1-0 lead allowing the other team to grow more into the game, which is what Southgate does.

No chance, not even close. How anyone can think this current crop is better than Lampard, Gerrard, Scholes, Rio, Rooney, Owen, Beckham (The list goes on), doesn't really know football. And then there was the Euro 96 squad coupled with France 98. That was England's golden years, not this lot. Some crackin players for sure but nowhere near England in the 90's. Not even close. But that doesn't mean they can't taste success, I'll just be very surprised under this fella that's all.

That was just in the PL, he scored 37 in all competitions. I think Ince got mixed up, maybe he was thinking of the fact Shearer hadn't scored for England for a while and maybe Blackburn as a team had a disappointing 1995/96 season in all competitions considering they were reigning PL champions.

What many of these experts will never understand is that it's not about nominating the best players for such a tournament, but rather the best team. You can have the best player in the world on your team. But if he only causes anger and unrest, you won't achieve anything. As an example, Nagelsmann: He didn't just go to the games and watch the performance. He asked the coaches, cooks and therapists about the players' behavior and drew his conclusions from them.

History doesn't matter in tournaments. When I was a kid France had won just as little as England, look at them now. Same with Spain, they were pushovers for most of my life. I don't get why some people cling to history like it will have any relevance. You need good players and a bit of luck and you can win.

Apart from the U21 men's team winning the last Euros and the women's team winning the last Euros. Not bad for a small nation that doesn't even include great players from Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. If it was a UK team, they would win every World Cup.

Germany, Portugal and Spain are three teams I expect to do very well ... along with France. England are a bit like France, but with a far worse defence and no experience of winning competitions. I think we (England) have talent, but if talent was the main ingredient to win the Euros then England and Holland would have won more, and Greece would have won less.

England have won various international honours at various different levels .The one exception is the senior men's teams so the '66 jibe is not correct. Scotland in contrast have never won anything at any level hence the difference in expectation.

Nobody cares about the strength of a squad. It does not matter. Never has. We are obsessed with the quality of players. It dos not matter. We are obsessed with world class. Does not matter. How good is the team. How good are the units within the team. England never won with six players who would have got in most teams.

Making excuses before the competition has even started! England have to win this one with the squad that they’ve got! Only France are in the mix, the rest are miles off where they were !

It's actually a very poor tournament. Not many great players, nor teams. Great chance for England, but the Manager seems to lack personality.
