Why Man Utd and Newcastle both need European football
Спорт
Newcastle United face Manchester United on Wednesday with both clubs competing for a place in Europe next season.
But is the increased strain on squads that comes with qualifying for UEFA’s lesser competitions actually worth it? Or would a season out of Europe allow both sides to regroup and build again?
Ayo is joined by Talk of the Devils Carl Anka and Pod on the Tynne’s George Caulkin to debate and compare the two United teams.

Newcastle arguably got into Europe a season too early with their lack of depth showing this season when injuries struck, that's what they need to prioritise over anything else this summer. Whilst the other is just a dumpster fire, clinging onto the smallest positives they can find

They needed a low pressure Europa League campaign to learn how to fight on 2-4 fronts and spread minutes around. Also helps to learn who's got the quality to play in Europe and who your squad players are

@@mattvarner5825 I have no idea how new player signings works, but I really hope they get 8 fresh young prospects rather than 2 big named players with a price tag. Their bench has been ABYSMAL for the majority of this season. Like two 40 year olds, and 3 goalkeepers as subs lol.

and we also got the 'group of death' that meant we couldn't use our squad at all and had to pick our strongest 11 for every match...same in the cups to be honest apart from maybe blackburn away which was still a tricky match due to our injuries at the time

@@googahmeier that number of young prospects in this market will command fees larger than two or three big signings of senior players. It'll help drive wage costs down but ultimately young talents is what Real Madrid and Arsenal will spend big on over the next few windows. The intensity Newcastle play with suits younger players but you need a blend of youth and experience to achieve anything

We were too early and overshoot too high. I think we would do better with less intensity of Europa League instead. However, it is important for EH and his staff to understand the effect of UCL on our physical limitations. We need to improve how we do things and the young squad for our backup. It’s a miracle how Miley filling so well so early. Great season nonetheless.
I like Carl but him saying that Man Utd's injury crisis is worse than Newcastle's is just so not true. In recent weeks, sure. But over the course of the season, no chance.

Man Utd's injury crisis is so severe, we barely make a starting 25. And it's so disruptive to the point there's no continuity in the style of play. Hence one reason (of the many) why the football is so chaotic.

@@chairsmissing Newcastle had 3 goalkeepers in the matchday squad and the only senior players on the bench were Ritchie and Dummett at one point, we were playing academy kids that are getting released in summer just to avoid playing with 10 men back in November/December.
A really good and interesting discussion - Carl and George are some of the best journalists and writers working for the Athletic and in the football sphere at the moment, and this was a really eloquent, funny and informative discussion both about where the clubs are at the moment and indeed the different stages that they are at. It's a strange situation to be in when despite the fact that Newcastle have just had their Director of Football poached, are out of all competitions and dropped points at the weekend, the mood seems to be a lot more optimistic than at Old Trafford. Personally, I have a sneaking suspicion that Man United will get the win at Old Trafford and will better Newcastle's result on the last day of the season regardless of form, but that's the pessimist in me talking.

Of COURSE injuries explain our poor away form, we have had major players missing from a squad that is limited by cartel rules.
Teams grow as the season goes on. Same as last season when Licha, Case and Eriksen came in and bonded. This season that growth was interrupted by injuries. Case in point, Evans/Casemiro partnership has gotten better over time because of playing together consistently. Imagine where the rock of how we played last season(Licha/Varane/case/Malacia/Shaw) went missing alongside the new signings so in essence the team on the pitch was worse than what we had last season
This whole prem season has been about inconsistency - for every club. NUFC have the best excuse in that they are a good way ahead of the rest when it comes to days lost to key players through injury. Bearing in mind the majority of the squad, and also most stating players are pre-take over bargain basement buys by le grand Michelle. As for tonight’s match - It’s got draw written all over it so a seven goal thriller it’ll be.
"Atletico Tyneside", 😂 another Carl gem

Lots of people wear the Yankees caps but I don't think anybody watches. I've heard of the Mets but only because I listened to a radio show from NY and they used to talk about the Mets a bit. Channel 5 used to show live NFL really late at night and I think occasionally baseball too and I think the BBC might show NFL highlights now but I'm not sure US sports are that popular here. I went to Japan a few years ago and was surprised how into baseball they were. They have these practice pitches with mechanical pitchers in lots of places (I accidentally pressed the wrong setting and the speed nearly took me out so i now appreciate how hard it is to even get near to hitting the ball)
Being negative in such a period is a 100% the reasonable thing to do.

All top sides need European football for the money and the kudus but the only 7 places sometimes 8 places, for 9 teams so 2 club every year will be disappointed. It looking like it 2 of West Ham, Man U and Newcastel will miss out this season, next season it be a different two, so on ,so on
But european fiitball don't need both

George is wrong again. It’s not a success to get Europa conference from this position. It just isn’t. Nor will the players see it as progress going from CL to conference as he suggests. No, to attract and retain the players we need it has to be Europa. Otherwise it’s a failure from this position where it’s in our hands.

The Athletic were scathing of the new owners when they took control. This correspondent said there would be an asterix against everything positive thing Newcastle achieved. Now we have things like this video. Sportwashing in action.
I have been in St James’s this season 4 times, Aston Villa🎉Chelsea🎉West Ham🎉and Luton😮…..we can’t blame injuries as Villa have been hit hard and look at them…we have been massively inconsistent and left it very late to get some away form and if tomorrow goes pear shaped then I fear for the summer….it is a straight shoot oot between the 2 UTDs😂

That is false, Chelsea are 5th for days lost by injury when you look at the data from Sky Sports 5 days ago.
These takes didn’t age particularly well after the result. Manure were clinical albeit poor. We were naive and poor during the important moments (the poor quality shows when it’s needed most). Manure will likely finish above us.
