Aquastat Troubleshooting

I recently lost heat and hot water. I took it upon myself to figure out what was wrong. Here I walk through the steps I took to troubleshoot the problem.

Really great job giving understanding as to how these things operate. Thanks.

I like these types of videos that help prevent outrageous labor costs. I know this has nothing to with furnaces but id like to share my recent success with a refrigerator that constantly runs to keep temp. Buy a bullet piercing line tap and attach to LOW side of the compressor. It's usually the larger diameter tube. If u have a refrigeration pressure gauge check it to see the pressure, add correct refrigerant to top off system.. Microscopic leaks that let an oz or two of refrigerant escape throughout the years cause this problem.

Thanks for the video. I have the exact same setup and have the same problem. I didin't see any evidence of arcing or cracks in the circuit board but I'm picking up a replacement to try today. Thanks again for the video!

My Aquastat quit 3 weeks ago and I have a HVAC guy to troubleshoot and replace it. I start to learn how this thing works on KZread and found your video. However, my Aquastat uses 24V to control the burner instead of 120V and it is the transformer is broken. The model is L8148 E 1257 for my Aquastat.

Glad you got the heat back on. My boiler uses that same model-it is only 10 years old and acting up meaning some times it works and sometimes it takes coaxing. I am ordering a replacement.

For some reason I've seen a few where the solder wears thin and cracks from the board. Re-soldered and tested relay. Worked

That unit could be repaired. If the solder on the board is bad, a small solder gun ( 40 to 60 watts ) is OK to fix it. The bad connection is the open contact of the thermostat relay. Save the unit, I'm sure you could repaired.

Is it normal to have only one wire on C1 going to the circulator? I do not have a wire from C2 going to the circulator.

Good explanation. Some questions. 9:18 Explain "half the voltage here and a quarter here". Why do you have a plug attached to the bad aquastat? I've never seen an aquastat with this setup!

Hi Matt, I don't understand your comments. And when you say 'with this set up' are you talking about how it is wired? I am wrestling with a naughty aquastat - and losing so far.

Does anyone know why there would be ozone smell coming from the aquastat? We had this happen last year and the guy came out and said water could have gotten into it and was releasing a smell ( no harm he said ) it cleared up for the year but just came back again. The thing was also buzzing really loudly before this happened again but we can't find any water this time. Any thoughts? Thanks!

When you say ozone, the first thing that comes to mind is a spark. I'm not saying that has anything to do with your issue, but if there's anything that I learned as a kid at the Museum of Science in Boston. Electrical discharge creates ozone, it was later in chemistry and physics that I understood why, but it was a lesson I learned early in life.

You're better off fixing it yourself. Noone will ever do as good a job as yourself. They wanna get in & out & paid as fast as possible. I didn't have time to do mine & the guy gave me the bill charge $75 more because he said I didn't have grounds & I couldn't get the hydrstat to work. When I opened the shutoff box I said yea & I still don't so how is the hydrastat working? A line of BS followed & I said it's ground through the copper lines all you did is attach grounds on the boiler & without having a ground going back to the main you're still not grounded. For the 1st 2 years heat was great in the house. The years that followed after several different so called tech were out the house was always cold hence turning the heat up. Not once did any check the aquastat other then checking if it fires by turning the low & high setting. Turns out the circulating pump was not getting enough voltage to push the water through the system. Once it was changed I had to turn the heat down.

have you ever heard of an ozone smell coming from these? We had this happen last year and the guy came out and said water could have gotten in somewhere and released the smell ( no harm he said ) it went away for the year and it has now come back shortly after turning on the heat for the year. It comes and goes but it is very strong when it does. It was also buzzing like crazy right before hand ( same as last year ) but we can't find any water.

@@qnocco1557 I never heard of that. Thankfully I didn't smell anything. I know Aquastat always buzz. I would doubt you'd find any water as the copper temp sensor never touches water. If you look at this diagram you can see the sensor sits in a enclosed jacket. www.inspectapedia.com/heat/Aquastat_Well_023_HoneywellCss.jpg
