April 8th 2015 | Lesson Raws

Фильм және анимация

Here's some more raws from this month! Haha it was a ruff ride but Ralph & Luna were absolute gems other than Ralph not listening at times & a few times getting left behind of jumps! I shouldn't need to say this, but I will anyways. Please this time try to keep comments to a minimum about how our coach teaches us and training methods. Everyone has different methods that work for them and that needs to be respected! Thanks so much lovelies have a great day!! We love you!

Is it just me or does that footing sound really hard to you guys? Like dirt on hard ground, not good.

+ItsAHorsesThing It sounds like the ground is a little hard from the air temp, but it looks like fine footing. I think it's the footsteps echoing in a closed space, since the sound of hitting a ground pole definitely isn't that loud from this far.

  • @DesertoyIt

+ItsAHorsesThing The footing sounds, and looks very shallow (more-so on the outside track than the inside). I ride in a covered ring that is slightly more open but never sounds like this and visually has more footing. It looks like there is some sort of tile that is on the left, at the entrance to the ring and not sure how far out it goes towards the ring. I'd be interested to know what kind of base this arena has underneath the footing. All of the horses look sound, though.

+Cerrenade if you have just a covered arena it's not going to echo because it's more open so you can't compare the sounds

+Cerrenade I ride in a completely closed arena, and it never sounds echoey like this, more like sand being stepped on. So that leads me to believe that this footing is really shallow, which is a shame since it's a nice size arena.

I would just say, when you land your jump, you are collapsing onto his neck. Keep your two point longer and don't fall forward. If he stops or decks out after that jump, you're gonna be on the ground.

I'm not trying to be mean or disrespectful, but I think if both of you worked on solidifying your leg, jumping bigger would be more comfortable, you wouldn't get popped out of the tack as often, and you wouldn't land in a heap as much (like landing on their neck). This is just my personal opinion, but you guys are both wonderful riders with wonderful horses :)

I really don't want to sound rude in any way whatsoever but I noticed you have Luna in a Pelham right now and you said she is becoming more responsive in your most recent video, have you talked to your trainer about maybe trying her in a Port? It can help her get off her front end a bit more and not get so long and low for the show ring. That's just an observation from these videos and it may also be just the way she's build. Again I'm not trying to tell you what to do or anything but I know it helped my guy get off his forehand and engaging his hind end more when I took him from a Pelham to a Port. :)

Hey Maya and Lauren I have an awesome tip that I learned from my trainer for your horses not cutting corners in a canter ( I'm not saying they have been but if Luna and Ralph just randomly get in the habit of cutting corners this is awesome advice) so, when you first approach the short side of the ring coming to the first corner, correct your horses once you approach the first corner, then don't correct them on the second one on the short side. Your horses shouldn't cut the second one. It is awesome, when I was corrected my horse on the second one as well as the first, she kept cutting both of the corners and it was so frustrating XD just some helpful advice if they ever cut corners in the future! Love you guys!❤️

There's a thing called patting/stroking your horse don't know if you've ever heard of it but it's to let the horse know that what they did was good and to say well done. How is your horse meant to know if what they did was right or wrong if you don't tell them or if you're just negatively tell them. Stroking your horse for working well isn't hard

Actually a more effective way to reward your horse is releasing pressure Petting and stroking is something that we taught them feels good It's kind of like saying "good boy" to a dog, it doesn't feel good to them but it lets them know we're pleased

Yeah, when I'm done riding my horse, I like to give him (almost) no leg and tons of rein. I also let him go at his speed and direction, and there is a hay stack thingy in the corner of the arena, so we sometimes stop over there if he did really well.

There were a couple pole in front and after the jump and she kept spooking and sort of doing what ralph is doing but then we took some poles away and she was better even though she still refused at first. Im not saying you or your trainer did anything wrong but it would probably be easier for you AND your horse if you start out with only a couple poles and gradually add more?

I'm really confused as to why youre using draw reins and carrying a crop, draw reins are mostly used on more fast, powerful horses to have more control over. They shouldnt be used as a training aid.

If your talks about Maya, she isn't using draw reins. She's using a Pelham bit with double reins rather than a single rein with roundings. Maybe Luna is strong but lazy 😊

AbbyEquestrian It also appears that Luna leans heavy on the forehand, making her feel stronger.

Honestly horses that jump that calmly like luna are really good because they are powerful without destroying everything.
