Highlight of the Night

Фильм және анимация

LOL so last night Ralph decided to show his attitude and have a little hissy fit. Needless to say we have some things to work on, but he went SOOOOOO well minus his little outburst hehe! Hope you all had a fabulous day!
P.S. don't mind his half shaved butt it's a working progress and I haven't finished it yet ahahahha

For anyone wondering, at the beginning I was trying to canter a circle and he decided to act up that's why I got after him, you can't let horses get away with stuff like that. It's a way to make bad habits. Anyways regarding my coach, she knows Ralph and has been coaching me for almost 2 years now. She doesn't like that he wasn't respecting me and listening to my aids so she threw a mitten at him haha! It was nothing, and she could have actually hit him with something that hurt but she just walked away at the end and let me sort it out :) There you all go! Some clarification.

MyEquineAddiction yeah the mitten din't faze him at all....lol. You handled that amazingly well. I just rode my TWH mare the other day for the first time and....she wanted to run....it was funny because she hates being lunged, and she has, supposed, arthritis so I didn't let her do much more than a little trot a few times but she wanted to run practically!

I don't agree with her throwing even something harmless like a mitten at him and although my instructor used to have a lunge whip to encourage my school horse to go forward when I was learning like your trainer is doing with the crop I do however love that she said no backwards tension no pulling back on the reins so he doesn't think back 😊

***** if he was being hurt or scared he probably would have bucked her off. also he knows how to canter and go in a circle so there was nothing to be misunderstood he was trying to see what he could get away with so he threw a fit and they were correcting that if they would have let him get away with it than whenever he would be asked to do that he would throw a fit every time to get out of doing it. when he did it right she rewarded him and everything was peachy. she did nothing wrong and majority of people would have done the same thing as her

It's fine to be hard on your horse when it needs to be trained! To the people saying it's not ok than tell me this, if you had a kid and they were kicking and screaming because you wouldn't give them a lollipop would you give them the lollipop or say no u told you, you couldn't have one. It's the same thing but horses don't understand English so you have to do stuff to communicate with them and if that means tossing a glove at them then whatever. If Lauren were to walk Ralph it would have been rewarding him. I know that a lot of people have different training methods but I think you should respect Lauren's training method. Hope this all made sense

Did he just want to keep swinging his hindquarters and shoulders out? Lauren could try some counter bend or go back to walk. If it's not going well in the trot don't go to canter.

LJEquestrian Of course everyone has their own training methods but the issue was the he decided that he didn't want to canter a circle so going to a walk would teach him that if he throws a fit he'll just get to walk and take a break.

I personally find it wrong. I don't like this way at all to teach the horse a lesson and would never do it myself (screaming, chasing, etc). I find it way more appropriate to be calm and take it slow when this things occur. It's not my horse and I don't think they are bad people for doing this haha, I still like her just as much! But personally I don't like the way they handled the situation :)

I don't know if it's just me, but the sand looks super packed and rock hard. I would suggest dragging the arena to prevent injuries. I agree with many others here that Ralph looks sore. A trick that you can do is gently squeeze the withers and keep doing that until you reach his back. If he flinches or twitches that means he could be sore. If I were you I'd give him a little bit of sweet feed and two pinches of Bute, and mix it up :) I could here 'Blank space' by Taylor swift in the background >:) and I was seriously dying when she threw the glove at him lol!

Lauren you rode him absolutely amazing! I don't know why so many people are getting so mad at your trainer. Fair enough she threw her glove but it is a little piece of material! Horses are thick skinned and people commenting hate towards her trainer need to think because beating a horse on its bum with a whip is a lot worse (not saying Lauren done that) but people out there do that! It may have annoyed you but just think of that glove hitting him and a whip hitting him! Lauren you are one of the best riders I have seen! Don't listen to any hate and keep up your amazing work ralphie is doing so well!

Jaffa pony of course everyone has there own opinions but agree with u when said a piece of material is harmless but on the other hand not all whips cause pain. i 100% disagree with the way racers beat there horses at races with those thick club whips even though the horse is already at the lead, but the horse i ride (twix) bucks at the canter and bolts for the jumps and is super strong and he knows it.(like luna) so my coach suggested a jumper whip it is very thin and has a small flap at the end so when he starts to act up i give him a tap on the shoulder. it dosent hurt him but it makes a noise that he seems to get as "hey stop that!" and it works. again my opinion

You rode well the majority of the time, but it is clear that he doesn't respect you. I'd recommend doing some good quality ground work with him (Not just lunging though, try backing up, join up, yielding ect) and earn his respect :) If you aren't sure how to do some of the things there's plenty of videos on KZread! Obviously I can't really give advice because 1. I have never ridden your horse or seen him ridden except from in videos, and 2. I'm not your instructor. These are just things that might help, and Maya could do it with Luna too! In my opinion every horse owner should use some Natural Horsemanship activities but that's just my opinion. You did a good job handling him, green horses are tricky and you two are coming on well !!! -Hmain xxx (NOT HATE)

+myequineaddiction Everyone needs to just take a breath. her trainer was not just chasing him around with a whip for fun!! And she wasn't even chasing him. She was just following using it as an extension of her arm, helping to get Ralph where they needed. And the glove in my opinion is no big deal, it didn't faze him, and it's a soft piece of fabric..no biggie. Also Lauren was not kicking him very hard at all.. And you need to apply pressure to get him to do what you need, and you can see she stopped and rewarded him when he listened. This was just another mile stone in training him, he has to learn that bad behaviour is not acceptable. Another thing is bits don't hurt the horse, unless you make them hurt just like a hackamore. Lauren handle this just fine, we weren't there to see every detail of the day. People are just over reacting about the glove. And other things. Yes the screaming may not have helped but my trainer has yelled before, and it's fine, it happens. Another thing is Lauren did the right thing by not stopping, she can't reward bad behaviour but when he did what was being asked he got s pat😊 it's all good. And this is the way there doing it. Everyone does it differently..just let them be. It's not like she abused him. Great job Lauren you handled that very well!!!👍😊

You're such a good rider :). But to the people making comments about her trainer, mine does the same thing when my horse is acting up like that. I'm pretty sure throwing a mitten at a horse or using a whip is not going to cause any damage. They had to show Ralph that him acting up wan't good or not what they wanted. Otherwise, he would continue doing it if there are no reinforcements. I dont know, maybe that's just how I was trained, but anyways thats all .x

Even though this was 2 years ago and you two are completely different now, you handled this well! One ting i would change is that your coach should've handed you that crop and let you get him through it. He can't really respond to a crop the same when it's coming from someone on the ground.

Sometimes horses tend to act up when you e.g. ask them to canter, because there is something wrong in their body or they are sore. It causes them to throw a fit. It's not to be mean to you in any way, just take it in consideration if he acts up like this more often. Sometimes horses try to tell you something by acting in a certain way. Besides that, great riding from your part. :)

My horse has been doing the exact same thing! plus he bucks almost constantly when we are cantering, which makes him disunited and then we have to trot again anyway... If anybody knows what I could try please help!! It's not a poorly fitting saddle he does it without and saddle and on the lunge, and hes having someone come out to look at his back soon

At the start when he kept misbehaving you reacted really well, keeping nice and calm. Just if he does that again, pull him in to make him look in and kick him. If he keeps going, giving him a little tap with one hand on his back to tell him he is not doing the right thing. Also communication is Very important. If he continues on, ask your trainer what you could do for him.

I can't believe how many uneducated people there are here trying to act like they know anything about horses. There is nothing wrong with her trainer or her riding. The mitten part was actually hilarious and way nicer than what Ralph deserved. Like lauren said, if you let horses get away with stuff then they'll make a habit out of it. Great riding Lauren! Ralph looks great! :)

Love you guys, and I totally understand that you can't let horses get away with things, however, as person who is learning to train large animals, I personally feel this situation could have been handled a little better. Ralph seemed pretty uncomfortable, uncertain and unclear of what to do which made him frustrated. Yes, you finally got him to do what you wanted, but only after a mitten was whipped at him, and your coach chased him with a crop. He got cantering a little bit after that, and I would have just STOPPED, and gave him a pat, because he ended up doing what you wanted, even for a split second. REWARD, then, do it again. Positive reinforcement, operant conditioning. If it took me and my horse that long to do something, I would just be done. All I am saying, is that I feel like this situation could have been handled slightly better.

If she threw that glove harder that could of probably given your horse a bruise or a scab witch can bother horses on there hindquarters. But anyways kick and do circles to make him go or give him a break and see what's wrong if he rarely does that. 😊

how ever that is , your giving the horse mixed signals throwing your hands around and your friend throwing a glove at the horse? also tighten your reins and use your legs as well as the reins to move the horse your horse is acting up cause it knows he's getting away with it.

All these comments about the trainer throwing the glove... Did Ralph look in any way scared or distressed when he was hit by the glove, no! I'm pretty sure It was a way of the trainer telling him to get on with things and to tell him that is it wrong to act up like that! It is in no way different to Lauren giving him a tap on his but with a whip/crop. I think Lauren handled the situation amazingly and she had a great trainer to help her through :) xx
