I'm sure this has torn her life into pieces, too. This is probably the last place she wants to be. We are on the edge of our seats, watching this trial, so imagine how SHE must feel. Out of all the witnesses on that stand, she is the last one anyone should nitpick on.

Ok here it is. Nik approached the kids and made a smartass comment when one of the snot-nosed kids (in his mind) asked him what he was doing. His smart ass comment was that he was looking for little girls. From that snarkiness came the boys specific heckling of him, calling him a pedophile. Why else would they have picked that particular insult? Nik fidgets with his knife on the way over to the boys, making sure he had it with him. He was preparing for a fight. Dare I say, he was aching for a fight. He was enjoying the back and forth with the kids, and then the adults, smiling and smirking. When it changed from teenage heckling to adult confrontation, he got mad. I interject here, he had ample time and opportunity to do the mature thing, step back and leave. He had no business there. Instead, he disliked being confronted by adults and embarrassed by the heckling, and he lashed out and punched the blonde. THAT is what got the fight started. Nice to know that those modern young men knew, traditionally, it was very wrong for a man to punch a woman. He knew it, everyone knew it. He should have expected repercussions for that act. He should have made a quick exit. But instead he told himself that those people weren't going to scare him or boss him around. After all, he had his knife. And when he saw the reaction to him punching a woman, he brought out his knife and surreptitiously opened it, getting it ready for action. He was going to show them who was boss. And then he just lost it as the unarmed boys and young men overwhelmed him. He stabbed, and then gutted everyone near him. He had "consciousness of guilt" throwing away the knife, and acting oblivious with law enforcement. He said he was even fearful of the police. Because he KNEW what he did was wrong, and he didn't want to be held accountable. He actually wanted to get away killing one and injuring the others. That is the height of arrogance, the trait he exhibited from the very first moment he approached the teens. This need to dominate must have been growing in him for a long time. HE IS SO VERY GUILTY. I hope the judge doesn't reward him with concurrent sentences. He killed and injured consecutively ... he should serve his punishment consecutively. I rest my case.

"Crazy eyed man approached them and grabbed them" Right. Not awkward, tense man who recently had a quadruple bypass and feels vulnerable anyway? Not seeing fear in them crazy eyes are you? No - he's crazy. In a country stacked with guns, no one could imagine lethal force ever being used! So, sensibly, they just mock him. They take his snorkel and throw it. Then, lie that he was peeping at little girls, he's a 'raper' and cackle like hyenas as he turns away, only to find he's blocked by more nasty kids who can't handle their beer. When exactly did he hit the girl? Looks like she was was touching him and he pushed her away, eventually. Have you ever had THIRTEEN drunk morons surround you, screaming so you can't think, calling you a paedophile? Touching you? Knocking you into water? If he saw an escape route, you think they wouldn't follow? Looks like they were in fact following. He's gesturing to friends. He is clearly hypervigilant (or 'crazy eyed'). Have you ever felt so separated from friends, ambushed, screamed over? Had to deal with multiple angry people who are all picking a different fight? Your adrenaline takes over. It's almost beyond your control if you genuinely fear for life and he did, clearly. If someone is stabbed in the belly and they pull back suddenly (the first strike, after being THROTTLED was clearly accidental) the guts are likely to follow. The fact the blows are low suggest defensive to me. It's a tragedy, extremely sad someone died. The dynamics of mobs are very powerful and people should know more about the hysteria and diffused responsibility. Miu is not guilty. People need to stop being spiteful aggressive ringpieces

Kids need to understand that they can't be disrespectful like these kids were or they will find themselves in similar positions. People are not going to put up with blatant disrespect and anyone thinking they should is a simp and a half. Maybe kids should be taught not to taunt adults like that and they won't have to get corrected by strangers. Unfortunately, such corrections can be severe. None of this would have happened if those kids had not bullied that man. But some people don't think they'll get spanked for being a jerk if there's a lot of jerks around them. They feel empowered enough to eff around. They picked the wrong one and found out. The sudden change in their tones -from sheer delight in their jovial taunts - to terrified horror should be used to remind people how cause and effect works when you forget to not be a jerk. Never underestimate how far people will go to correct disrespectful people. Some people will go to extremes to teach bullies a lesson. Remember that, kids.

I'm just a few moments into the video where they're showing the whole group out on the river together and it stands in such juxtaposition to what transpires later. I (as I'm sure many who will read this) have floated rivers throughout my whole life. While I've seen confrontations on the river, it's always been a couple drunkards and over fairly quickly. Those days are sunny, happy, fund days surrounded by friends. It's so easy to find new people on the river to laugh with, share a story and have a beer that it makes this all the more tragic. I don't know much about the story yet but my assumption is that alcohol played a part (excuse my ignorance if I'm wrong). I stopped drinking at the beginning of 2023 but I bartend in the summers and people often say "that must be hard to bartend and not drink" but it's not at all. It so often brings out the worst in people, turns and friendly person into a nasty aggressive one or just a stammering, stumbling, fool. Anyway, it's trite but what a total waste of multiple lives over something so stupid and avoidable.

Even "peaceful" people can act violent if pushed to that point or if they're intoxicated... He had plenty of time to leave. I don't believe that she didn't see anything when people who were passing by and weren't as close as their group could hear the boys and went to help. He never said a single word during the altercation and the videos prove that. There's a second video from another witness that shows the larger scope of it. He is the one that approached, he is the one that threw the first hit, he is the one that lunged, he is the one that had tons of opening to run off but chose to keep stabbing people, even when his friends were present. He's a murderer. Plain and simple. This is not self defense. He needs to face the consequences.

Drunk young men and women started the entire event at / in the Apple River that day. Mr Miu was on his own, well behaved, minding his own business, not disturbing anyone and looking for something with his goggles in shallow water. It was totally unnecessary to be confronted by drunk youths, who also unnecessarily started horrible name-calling and harrassment of Mr Miu. Soon gradually joined by equally drunk youths, the harassment continued and escalated. Mr Miu did not bring a knife on that day, planning or hoping to injure, or kill, someone. It apears that the sport "tubing" requires knives for cutting ropes, etc. Like other people, Mr Miu was in possession of a knife for that purpose. Mr Miu was a single person, being confronted and aggrevated by a group of very loud drunk people, also having knives in their possession. It was, however, wrong swinging the knife, injuring people. On the other hand, If the drunk youth minded their own business and left Mr Miu alone to enjoy his day at the river, the entire horrible event would certainly have been avoided !!!!!!!!!!

They put their hands on him. He used his left hand to get them off him. They attacked him. He responded in fear for his life. I feel bad for this family. He had a right to defend himself. All the other witnesses have lied and said he puched her with his right hand which had a knife in it. Its impossible for him to have punched her. They can't cover it up, it's all on video. We all know what instigated the situation. It is as plain as day. He may be guilty of manslaughter by law, but let the trial figure that out. I can tell you that this man wanted no part of the aggressive hoodlums and tried to walk away and ignore, but they baited him until it got physical. It's too bad he had a knife. however, there was no guarantee that group wouldn't have severely injured him or killed him depending on how violent their emotions were in whatever condition they were in.

@@drewc771 yes, it is unclear why he was by the innertubes. I didn't see any video before that, as to how those parties met together. We know that the man went to search for a phone. I don't think he went down the river searching for groups of teens or searching to collect some innertubes. This is what we will learn from the trial and what crime and punishment he will get according to the law. And later in the video you can see the man making some distance between them as the group size increased. Why did the knife come out? He didn't bring it out to flatten innertubes. He got pushed into the water against a group 13-1. Even if he didn't have a knife and just pushed back, it wouldnt have ended well. Definitely was not premeditated, and the teens behavior certainly led to the confrontation unfortunately.

They were the aggressors, not him. I have zero empathy for any of the ones who were injured. If they weren't shoving or hitting him, they would have been a safe distance from the knife. He didn't attack any of them. He was defending himself against a bunch of bullies. You may think their behavior was acceptable, but you are in the minority. I raised two kids into amazing adults and I KNOW neither of my children would ever treat anyone as these vicious fools did. They had no right to bother him or approach him in the first place. The lesson is to be very careful in provoking a total stranger, because there are all kinds of people out there, packing much bigger weapons than this guy had. Dumb is dumb, and these kids and their drunken allies were as dumb as dirt that day. I'd be embarrassed to claim any of these "kids" as mine. UGH.
