Jess, you said Angelina has a deep well of music to draw upon. I am willing to wager Angelina listened to more songs before becoming a teen, than I have in my entire 63+ years. It is not just the amount of music but how she digests and embodies it all. Once the music is in her, she is able to improve it. That natural instinctual skill put together with the most beautiful tone I have ever heard, makes Angelina my all time favorite musical artist.

I'm certain she has Absolute pitch, tone and harmony. Absolute pitch is actually better than perfect pitch but some use it interchangeably. I think she hears and reads the music for a song and then her mind just starts to manipulate the lyrics and music to fit her dynamic. She is truly genius at this. I am so happy that she came during my life time. What a blessing she is.

Thanks for the detailed technical analyses, very interesting! She has indeed a lot of control and also a very rich vocal toolbox which she can apply with great precision (and instinct). She was 12 here and the guitar player is Ivan Mendez and very talented. They did a serie of this kind of recordings over the span of months. He would come over to her and would hang out with her and her family during the day. In the evening they’d quickly settle on a song and with a tiny bit practicing they would make these recordings. These recordings are mostly one take and with little to no processing as far as I can tell. You can hear indeed every detail, every breath and also the fingers on the strings. What it does to me is that it gives me a sense of personal concert, as if I am with them in that room. When it comes to her tone, to me she adds a sense of melancholy and sadness. This changes the story: with Rihanna you know that the other will be staying, with Angelina’s melancholy, she is asking but she knows it won’t happen. I find it very interesting how with just the timbre of your voice you can change the story.

So glad you've continued your journey since I begged you to check her out. You bring a whole different take on Angelina's that is fascinating. I just know what she does for me and she has literally changed my life. I'd love to see your breakdown of Angelina's Mics in her performance of "I Put a Spell On You' Black & white in the studio. She uses one mic in the booth that I am pretty sure you will recognize. Again, I have no knowledge on this. She has a second mic again should be recognizable as she performs live with the band behind her. 'I'm guessing most of the vocals were recorded in the booth but I would love to know if there was any of both. This is probably Angelina's most Iconic performance and one of her most watched and I haven't heard anyone who knows how this was likely done. That would have been my inclination that it was all recorded in the booth. I just wonder if they did a live performance when they did the old school mic and just meshed the video with the audio recording or if it was lip synced which Angelina has obviously done. 'Fly Me to the Moon' leading the horse.at what I was guessing was near some salt deposits, I was guessing California or Arizona. I'm guessing also on 'Million Miles' official Video. Surprised he hasn't been inundated with requests for this.

This song was a huge hit for Rihanna and it should be noted that Forbes recently reported that she was a Billionaire ! I believe she's sold 100 million albums. Here we have Angelina sitting with Ivan in her make-shift home studio and it's evident that she couldn't have really practiced the song much, if even that. Ivan has said he and she usually complete these sessions in one take, two at most. Still, when I compare it to Rihanna, Angelina simply brings forth more emotional penetration and I believe it has to do with her being a true jazz singer. There is no way a non-jazz singer can sing a heartfelt ballad better than a true jazz specialist, and that goes for Adele, Lana Del Rey, or anyone else you might want to compare her to.

I think one reason she likes this mic is b/c she has learned to use her breathing as part of the music. Often you will notice a breath is used to bridge notes. She does a lot of odd stuff like that. For instance, sometimes she will replace a word with a humming sound, or will replace the "ng" sound at the end of a word with "hmmm". Or, she will create a one-word contraction out of two words (e.g.: "young girl's" = "youn'gers". She will either compress or draw out a word depending on what her artistic will desires. All this contributes to the amazement we feel when listening to what she can do when recreating iconic songs.

Great analysis. Good points on the guitar separation and clarity too. I like that she can have a full orchestra or just a guitar and be fully adaptable and entertaining.

Great reaction but need a little more volume from your mike. Did you know that Angelina plays the piano, flute, guitar, and violin and also paints

You clearly have a cerebral and analytical approach to your reactions which is fine. However, in your quest to improve your own vocal capabilities don’t let your analytical side dominate your practice sessions. Music is about how it makes us feel. Allow your emotional side the ability to interpret the intended meaning and feeling of the lyrics.

I appreciate this 🙏 it actually took me forever to find a coach who worked off of feel instead of the regular ‘conventional’ practices. Excited for it to bring me closer to projects like these!

Great comment and great response. This is something that has really surprised, amazed and baffled me with AJ since I found her in 2014. She seems to have both of these bases “fully” covered and I just don’t understand! She just seems to be able to analyse in depth a song and bring forth her understanding with such an emotional charge that it just takes my breath away. Truly confounding!
